Petscop, the new (most likely) creepypasta pretends to be a PS1 game

People have explained it to me like five times but I can still never remember what creepypasta means. It makes no sense to me and never sticks in my brain.
You ever tell / hear a ghost story that was heard from someone else to spook each other around the campfire? That, but online.

Kotaku giving a YouTuber a chance to profit off a child's death. Lovely.

Is this a step up or a step down from their (ex?) parent company profiting off of rape videos? I honestly don't know.

Five nights at Freddy's was inspired by a real shooting. I imagine many horror films were. I don't really see the issue.

This is definitely a far cry from something like Hatred.

Yeah, and Her Story drew a lot of inspiration from the Jodi Arias trial and interrogation tapes. Nothing wrong with writing fictional stories based off real events. It is a bit weird to have direct references to the real life people in the game though, so I understand people being a little creeped out by that...

Meshing the (pretty tired) "haunted game" creepypasta with the Lets Play format is brilliant. Surprised it hasn't been done yet. I believe Gozilla was a blog-type thing.

Yeah. It's not done for shock value like Hatred, and this seems to be a legit attempt at making something creepy

You're not alone. What's really sickening is that this attachment therapy bullshit is actually a thing. My mind literally can't process how this methodology gained any sort of legitimately.

I remember an episode of Law and Order: SVU that dealt with this very storyline. The sad thing is that for every twisted storyline of that show, there's a real life event not too far from that episodes plot.

Really breaks your heart.

Can't say I'm a big fan of using a 10 year old child who was choked to death as inspiration for a creepy pasta. Wonder how these fucking idiots would feel if they went through the same thing.

But I do respect the talent behind this. Extremely creepy and well done. But fuck it. When you do Creepypasta, invent something. Be creative. Do not use the murder of a little girl for cheap thrills. It destroys everything you worked for, and makes you a coward.

I wish I'd never wikied it. How can people be so vile.

Just saw the last one, I don't think it ever was a PSX game with all those effect and all the creepy stuff.

Still gonna follow this game close just for the mystery and the show.

I can understand that. Putting the name in directly may have been a step too far. It's not really necessary either, from what I can tell it's mostly passing references to the person, that would still work without those direct names. Like FNAFs, which alludes without naming names.

Yeah directly referencing an actual dead child in your spooky video game seems a bit tasteless.

Also lol at Kotaku thinking this might be a real unreleased PS1 game.

I mean....How long have you been alive? Some of the most impactful and though provoking/discussion starting pieces of media are of tradegies. The photo's of children running from Napalm in Vietnam or the photos from Abu Ghraib or the people jumping from the the WTC during 9/11. All could be considered tasteless photos of tradegy, but also platforms for people to start discussions.

Petscop(so far from what I've seen) is very mild comparatively and just comes across as creepy more than anything else.

Give me a break. We're talking about a shock-value creepypasta not some breathtaking work of art.

Seems like a really desperate viral marketing campaign for a unity game but at least its not as desperate and pathetic as "twitch plays punch club"

Nobody can tell if Petscop is real

Its not like its making light of their death or anything. I could see it being called tasteless if it was like 30 Minutes or Less or something.

Artstyle is interesting enough, but if it references real-life deaths then that's a bit tasteless. The combination of the unsettling atmosphere and narration that's not over-the-top already elevates it above typical 'Wow so scare is Link actually DEAD?' type content.

I watched the six available videos last night and really enjoyed them. The game replicates the look and feel of a PS1 game so well. It's probably the most compelling imitation of the hardware I've ever seen, especially in the sound design.

I'm also enjoying the "Let's Play" and am really intrigued by how it will play out. But I must admit, it should wrap up soon. It's a slow burn for sure, and I don't know how much longer it can sustain the tension. There needs to be another "big break" to payoff all this wandering.

Also, what is the main character? Some kind of chicken? Just a creepy thing?

how can it reference something from the 00s if the game was made in 97?

What does it reference?

Edit: oh, duh. The Newmaker killing.

Wonder how it would have been received were it just released to the wild for people to play and discover stuff on their own. Although it feels like it isn't a real game but a different set of states he triggers between videos. Still, I'm very impressed with the 90's aesthetics and sound design. Shame he couldn't disable the perspective correction on geometry, or it would have been a perfect fake.

Planned death?

Obviously staged but I don't say that to take anything away from him. I kinda love seeing people have an affinity for this era's aesthetic (most seem to hate it) and he executed it well-- the menus, sounds, everything. Cool project.

am i the only one that feels like its sort of bogged down by the overuse of darkness and vignetting? it feels a bit heavy handed, and i feel like itd be so much cooler if the grimness of the situation was juxtaposed by the presentation. that is, more like it did in the intro, which had a surreal cheerfulness to it and was supposed to be a game

the context is just sort of fucked with the music stops and suddenly everything is really spooky and hard to see. any suspense of disbelief i had that this was some weird unreleased anomoly was kinda out the window, because it just becomes too dark and heavy handed, and clearly wasnt a game anymore

its cool and impressive, though. im only on part 3 but its pretty intriguing and theres obviously more to it, im just fickle when it comes to presentation

Ben Drowned is the only creepy pasta I've been invested enough in to read it all the way through. That was because of the work involved. This sounds to be on the same level of effort. Will definitely watch this!

just watched all of these. very interesting stuff, curious to see it continue.

tragedy has been used as the basis for art projects many times. whether this project is simply intended to unsettle its viewer or to spread awareness of the original story doesn't matter. clearly whoever created it was deeply affected by it in some way, and created this game and LP because of it. no one bemoans Brand New for recording Limousine.

Yeah. It loses itself when he finds a secert code from the maker, inputs it in the only level in the game, a level that isn't even finished, and enters a new world 4x as big as the first level.

It would have been way better on a slow build. 5 complete levels, slowly building the tension, clues leading him to the plane, not a dumb code. Maybe mirror worlds of the levels first, before finding the basement. It need a better slower transition.

I just finished the 2nd video and this is tense and well done. An indie developer should make note and make a game similar to this. They put in a lot of effort into it, however it is obvious that it's fake because the textures are way too good for a PSX game. They really should have just tried the game to get running on PSX or make the game very low tier in textures and poly count.

EDIT - Holy shit! The
5:30 mark with the pet he couldn't catch appearing again
at the sixth video has me dying. LMFAO!
