Inkling Boy & Girl are the first black non-Mii characters in Mario Kart

So what you're saying is

"We're not a monolith, but let's all identify with the same character."?

This is a different topic but, with someone as dark as that inkling, why wouldn't they "identify" as black? Because FWIW, society would.

She has black skin. She's black. End of story really.

Dudes I posted are Cubano.

Still black to the world at large.

They're universally brown or at least should be regarded as such. There are many brown-skinned ethnicities on the planet with worse representation in gaming than black people. These other people are often not black (African-American) and don't identify as black. If we want to be more inclusive of all these people we would all do good to appreciate that distinction and not insist an ambiguously tan or dark skinned character is black by default (just like a light tan character isn't white by default). Be mindful that some of us other brown minorities have had to deal with shittier representation in gaming and other media.
In the case of characters like the Inklings, I don't think anyone's going to fault someone dark-skinned, but not of Afro-Caribbean descent for identifying with them. Identification is all about looking for similarities; be they visual ones, such as skin colour, facial and broadly body features, eye colour, hair style (as in type, colour, curliness etcetera); or non-visual ones, such as culture, or history. So I'd expect darker-skinned Inklings to resonate with many underrepresented ethnicities, and to repeat myself - wouldn't fault them for doing so, and would in fact welcome it, because of the positive effects of representation.

I work a Cuban dude (who doesn't have as dark skin) but understands how mixed his own country is. You're black once you have enough melanin, and I think that's understood in South America.

Yes. Who would disagree?

Of African origin. Nobody ever said anything to the contrary. You're imagining things.

Oh so you're just ignorant, okay then.

Official Alternative Facts List For This Thread
- Black inklings aren't black, they're white tan inklings.
- Despite Monolith being Nintendo, Elma doesn't count as a Nintendo character
- Elma can't be black because (XCX spoilers)
she's an alien
but she can be Japanese

There are Indians, South East Asian, Native Americans, Inuit/Eskimo, Pacific Islanders, and many non-black people with that complexion or close to it. If I were native Hawaiian for example I could see myself in that Inkling and someone telling me nah, they're black, they're not you, isn't a great feeling.

I take no issue with saying the characters are black. But I do take offense to saying they can only be regarded as black. Some in this thread are getting irritated that someone would say they can also be brown, and that just makes no sense to me. The brown argument is inclusiveness, not a dirty handwaving tactic.

Also note the irony in using supposed non-black features to rule out dark-skinned characters from being considered black, but including anime characters into the fold of being Japanese on the basis regardless of their usually-impossible physical features. And let's talk more about Mario; how often do you see a man with chestnut brown hair, a jet black mustache, and blue eyes? What the fuck is with that?

White and Japanese characters can look like anything and get away with it. Black characters? Hold on a second, let me get out my invisible checklist just to make sure we're being accurate.

Lol for real. There's already very few representation of us in video games in general let alone a Nintendo game. Like no one is bending over backwards to explain that Mario isn't really Italian because of Yoshi's Island Mushroom Kingdom bullshit. Why can't there also be black kids that also happen to be squids in a Mario racing game?

Eh..I'll remind you that those free cruises took us to more than just America.

Man I'm just saying where does the cut point end? Are english folks identified the same as danes and sicilians since that's where most of the modern islands pop came from? How about the Arab migrations along northern africa?

At some point after like, 6+ generations (Yasiel Puig is like 7th or 8th generation Cuban) you ain't of African origin other than in the most technical (racist) terms.

But yeah you do have a point.

black person: "wow this inkling has skin just like me, he could BE me!"
some jerk: "fuck, how do i combat this"

"well actually, we have to calculate what actually IS black..."

Bahahahaha! Oh God.

What the hell is so funny? Most Hawaiians do not identify as black.

https://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/census/2011-02-24-hawaii-census_N.htm

The state's overall racial breakdown for the non-Hispanic population: white, 22.7%; black or African American, 1.5%; American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.2%; Asian, 37.7%; Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 9.4%.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_Hawaiians
Native Hawaiians (Hawaiian: kānaka ʻōiwi, kānaka maoli, and Hawaiʻi maoli) are the indigenous Polynesian people of the Hawaiian Islands or their descendants.[4] Native Hawaiians trace their ancestry back to the original Polynesian settlers of Hawaii.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau report for 2000, there are 401,162 people who identified themselves as being "Native Hawaiian" alone or in any combination, but they are not considered Native Americans.[1] 140,652 people identified themselves as being "Native Hawaiian" alone.[2]

It's really fucking weird at the condescension coming from some of you that want the Inklings regarded as black but take offense from the rest of us who have been worse represented wanting them regarded as more widely brown, which too includes black people. As baffled as you are that there are posters in here saying they're white, I'm as baffled at some of the way you're reacting.

I swear to god if somebody comes into this thread trying to say Knuckles isn't black they're gonna catch these hands

Lol real talk, that started to bother me in recent years because of Knuckles' actual design characteristics and where the determination of his "blackness" was coming from. A character based on an Australian mammal with an Aztec-inspired historical origin who was usually voiced by the whitest-sounding guy they could find was obviously black because... rap music and dreads.

....

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Is your point that Taino are not black?

Because...

Taino are Taino. They just happen to be a common ingredient of the high miscegenation found in the Latino Antilles (Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Cuba). Truthfully while phenotypically (and genotypically) most are mulatto and mestizo, there are several dominant types that appear more Caucasian, Taino or Black. But that's really another topic.

The culture was wiped out, but you see the phenotype especially in Dominicans and Puerto Ricans.

I'm laughing because what you posted is exactly what's been being done to black posters in this thread and you don't even seem to see it. I'm also enjoying this new tactic of trying to bring in other PoC groups in order to continue the garbage going on in this thread. Yeah, I'm so sure you care deeply about the representation of these other PoC groups.

Pretty big deal, actually.

Why do people always have to step in to these threads to tell people that they don't care? We get it you're probably white.
it's great seeing more and more diversity be mainstream in video games but it makes me realize that other ethnic minorities are even further behind in this.

edit: i misunderstood the OP!

I'm Afro-Caribbean. This is not a disingenious tactic ffs. I know my people are black and brown and everything in between. I'm not trying to do anything to black people here. Take your accusations elsewhere. I genuinely believe the Inklings can be universally brown (including black) for me, you or anyone who identifies as such. If this bothers you, you have your own problems.

Thanks for the clarification, because when I was looking up pictures you could see many shades being called descendants.

Would you accept, some are black? (I'm asking because you obviously know more than I do and I don't know if the pictures I'm seeing are legit).

Google then, please. Lemme know what you think.

It's up to those people, their ancestry and what THEY call themselves. It's not up to me from reading a blurb and eyeballing a few images.

My earlier argument is this: the Inklings are black and brown for all of us black and brown people. I'm not one of the "lol not black" shitposters. That's all there is to it.

I mean there are several Taino-African mixes, just like a variety of other mixes. Truthfully you could have an African descendant who never mixed with other races, or hell just moved to one of those islands a generation ago.

I mean, what the hell does "black" mean to you if Andaman doesn't fit the definition?

Anyway, I don't think anyone dislikes the idea that multiple kinds of people can identify with one character. If anything, race is far more varied than people think regardless.

But no ones saying that the Inklings are African American, just that they don't have light skin tones. Posters are using "black" to mean "not white".

I don't think it makes sense to call them African descendants though. It would have to be more recent, but the fact that they wouldn't mix, as you say, doesn't stop them from being any less African over time.

Would it have to be a drastic change in genealogy via environmental influences over generations to stop being of African descent?

I'm not expecting you to have these answers or to draw these lines in how long it should take, but it's only fair, at the very least (and perhaps more honest) to say that the term "black" at the very least, doesn't mean relatively recent African descent with regard to human history.

Every one of you that insists that gaming is, "mature" and should be recognized as an art needs to look at its community and threads like this and realize just how childish it and they are. This is some toddler shit, scared because something doesn't look like how you want it to. SMDH
