Amazing flick, possibly my favorite film of the last decade (if not longer). Just does everything so right. It's a film that shows up on HBO or wherever some times, and I always end up getting sucked in.

If/when I get a 4k HDR OLED TV, the UHD version of this flick will have to be the first thing I fire up on it.

Also pretty remarkable how Miller was able to drop back into action film making so well after doing a bunch of family movies.

It was a really good, unique film which made bold choices. Action scenes were amazing. I wish I felt the love as others do, but the characters were muted to the point where it was hard for me to develop much interest in them, or what happened to them. Still, as a visual experience it was well worth the price, but I have no desire to watch it again.

Edit: also agree that the villains were kind of silly. They were more ridiculous than intimidating, and for this film to work I think it needed more than just bog standard wasteland mutants.

The villains i felt were very literally and philosophically angry relatives. Max found himself in the middle of a family spat and the motivations felt teal and personal.

Nobody was looking for a fountain of youth, or a map to a new world. They wanted to get away from an abusive relationship.

It was inspired and perfectly executed. In summary you are wrong. Good day sir!

Not to pick but this could be a case of Seinfelds not funny since the Max franchise created the "bog standard wasteland mutant" to begin with and just about everything post-apocolyptic with those kind of characters have been ripping off the Max movies since the early eighties.

Amazing movie that was creative as hell from start to finish. I remember walking out of the theater and thinking that I should buy another ticket and immediately watch it again.

Really good movie, about as good as Babe Pig In The City

Babe: Pig in the City is damn underrated. Such a fun and imaginative film. More people need to see it.

All-time top 3 action films.
Easily. And I still strongly feel that the film's stature will only grow with time. Repeat viewings keep showing more layers to it and also show just how masterfully Miller and his crew put the thing together.
It is also one of the crowning achievements of science fiction world building for me as well. Fury Road felt like the culmination of Miller's dream. He finally had the experience, technology, and money to pull off the world he had always envisioned for the series.

Reminds me of a coworker that loved the film but felt it was ripping off Borderlands and other post apocalyptic things too much. Oh, that poor child. That was a fun time educating them about the influence of Mad Max and Road Warrior on everything.
They had seen the light on Fury Road, but the light shone brighter after telling them of the series' legacy.

It's the only non-comedy film I've watched over and over again in a short span of time. Absolutely loved the action.

Time for another watch tonight.

I can't count how many times I've watched and rewatched the first 45 minutes. One of the greatest spectacles in cinema. The frenetic escape attempt, the ceremony of launching the War Rig, that long horizon speeding to Gas Town before the turn, Furiosa's raging turmoil just under the skin, the hydraulics and fire and spin-bladed battle with the hedgehogs, the storm wreaking glorious vengeful havoc and Max's relentless survival instincts throughout, just before finally toppling headlong into silence as the flare's light fades away into darkness, and about a thousand unspoken moments inbetween.

Always let out a long held breath as Max slowly pulls himself up out of the sand.

Just fucking perfect.

And watched it again just now because of this thread, and will catch up with the rest of the film a little later today.

Haha, I mean I'm not expecting loads of support on a dissenting opinion about this film. In Road Warrior they were scary, but it grew stale in Beyond Thunderdome and Fury Road didn't evolve the formula at all. If anything it kind of regressed. So despite your involvement with my favorite videogame, You're Wrong!!

All the more reason, I think to do something a little more interesting.. But hey.

This is easily my favorite film of all time. I just love it to bits. Every time someone asks what movie should we watch I always bring it up, it is endlessly entertaining.

Argh, I just don't get the hype for this film... Yeah it looks gorgeous at times, but Max is played terribly, TERRIBLY by Tom Hardy. His Max just doesn't work for me at all. Furiosa was more of the main protagonist for me over his muted performance. Just feels weird that the main character feels subdued and a bit out of place through the whole movie.

I guess I was immediately annoyed by the opening of the film, with all the crazies. The film had a manic beginning that gave me a headache, then Immortan Joe or whatever his name was... what a ludicrous looking villain. I just thought he looked silly (same goes for flamethrower guitar guy - don't get all the people proclaiming best movie ever because of THAT -yes I've basically seen that in previous threads). Yeah sorry I just did not gel with this movie. I wish I did, I went cos of the universal hype and I seem to be one of the few who doesn't rate this at all. Hate being out of the loop, but it just rubbed me up the wrong way. Sorry!

I'm basically with you. I don't share your criticisms, but on the whole; I don't get what the fuss is all about. Cinematography was incredible, and I found it to be enjoyable (and better than the rest of the series, except maybe 2). But everyone on GAF treats it like one of the best films ever made, top whatever action movies of all time, etc., etc., etc. on and on and it's nowhere near there for me. Probably doesn't rate in my top 20 action films. It's fun, I just wish I liked it as much as everyone else. I liked the world in the game more.

This isn't a minority Gaf opinion. The film was critically acclaimed absolutely everywhere. Many of the most reputable reviewers and film sites/magazines had it as either their number 1 or in their top 3. It's unfortunate you weren't that into it.

I adore this film, but as an action movie, would you really put it above the likes of Robocop, Terminator/T2, Aliens, Die Hard, Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Termintor isn't really an action movie. Robocop isn't beloved for its action. T2 and Aliens should make the list. The other two...

Nah.

Mad Max and Dredd are two the best recent popcorn action flicks I've seen. They're unabashed tributes to the best of 80s and 90s action, with fantastic cinematography and effects.

The sandstorm part, and the immediate events before it and after is a fucking timeless piece of art and filmmaking.

It's not just the colours, which of course are fantastically well used, but the framing of shots, sounds, fighting, action, struggle and sheer compelling insanity that happens when they are in the great monster.

Like others said it says so much with so little, case in point, fucking thunderstorms within giant sandstorms, that alone tells you, without a single line uttered, just how damn broken the world is. Which then ties into what max says, that everyone is broken in their own way after what happened at 'the beginning'.

Just magnificent film making of the highest order.

I watched this again for like the seventh time on Friday and it's Just. So. Glorious. The audio, the pacing, the editing, and the cinematography are just too damn good. Can't wait for the sequel.

I know for a lot of people it's sacrilege to ever mention new movies alongside the classics, but Fury Road is just as good if not better than most of the best action movies ever made. Straight up. Every frame is filled with details, and every beat feels meticulously planned and lands perfectly. It's a movie built to be rewatched and last. Simultaneously feels like something that fell out of the sky from the 80s, and also from a future we don't deserve.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
I am half tempted to watch the originals but feel they may be slightly dated now, as I have never watched them, other than that i could get into the Video Game perhaps, is that any good?

I had the same thought. Watched Mad Max. It was bad. Skip it.

The only interesting thing about it is that it takes place in some weird low-key dystopia they really only hint at.

Certainly above Robocop, and easily in the conversation with the rest, yeah.

Yeah, it's fantastic, and it was great to see a lot of practicals happening on screen in addition to the CGI. Gonna give Miller props. The first half is pure adrenaline.

Max actually opens the film, and has the most screentime, plus he gets more to go in the climax compared to Furiosa. The actual complaint that Max is a supporting character in his own film, is something I've never really gotten, especially after actually seeing the film, but each to their own of course.

It's a very pretty movie, but the way some people acted like it was the best thing since the invention of the wheel annoyed the hell outta me

The first Mad Max film actually had a lot of production problems behind the scenes especially with how it was funded. I don't consider it a great film, but there's a reason why one might consider it a "bad" film. I'd say it's worth at least a viewing though.

One of the few movies I had to go and watch a few times in theaters. It has been a while since I've seen a segment from a film that made me want to yell from all the exhilaration. It's so good. Also, plus 1 for these ridiculous closeups, really added a punch to those chase scenes.

What a godlike film in every aspect.

I love how much the action in the scene directly ties into the music playing. Here the revving of the bikes and going through the air matches and is picked up by the ebbs and flows of the music. Then the whine of supercharger does the same to swell the music at the climax. it's just a masterclass.

Before that Furiosa banging on the airfilter which starts the bass and leads to the music coming in, or the drums in the war party blending in and out with the music.

One of my favorites of all time. I saw it in the theatre I think 6 times, was completely mesmerized by its awesomeness. To be that gaga over a film was completely crazy for me.

Watching at home just isn't the same...

God level. Seeing the screening of this a few days prior to release was one of the best theater experiences I ever had.

Literally when the opening titles happened I was already thinking to myself *holy shit, I think I'm watching a future classic action movie right now*

such relentless energy to it all, and the attention to detail was well done too. Road Warrior was one of my favorite action movies growing up, but I didn't think Miller would return 30 years later from Mad Max 3 and deliver something that felt as well made as 80s action classics but with a modern paint job. Usually you expect people to get rusty with age or lose that spark.

a heavy metal masterpiece tbh. that scene when furiosa and max start to cooperate when the bikers are chasing them is one of the best action scenes ever the music and just the synergy they all have...whew.

The praise from the circles that normally don't care for genre fare (Cannes for example) made a lot of sense, on a technical level its so well made.

the excessive color filtering was cool as well. the night-time blue scenes made me wish James Cameron made a future war Terminator movie before Salvation happened.

Nah.

Die Hard and Raiders aren't on the list for top action movies of all time?

I'd argue both of them are better action films (and better films period) than anything else I named save possibly T2.

Yes obviously; do you not?

Honestly, I'd put Fury Road ahead of nearly all those movies on a list of my own personal favorites.

But if we're talking which actions films belong above it (not just for the action, but which films in the action genre are better films), I'd put Raiders, Die Hard, and T2 above it.

Raiders is a masterpiece. Die Hard reinvented the action genre and spawned countless copycats. And Terminator 2 had amazing set-pieces, pacing, and character development that's rarely seen in an action flick. Tell me you had dry eyes when Arnold gave the thumbs up as he lowered himself into the molten steel.

That's not to take anything away from Fury Road. It's in a league of its own when it comes to visual storytelling, spectacle (the whole thing is a car chase, ffs), and stunt work unseen since Jackie Chan's heyday. It's a fantastic film, and one I keep going back to again and again.

Gun to my head, I'd probably put it in my top three favorite movies of all time. But if asked to name the best, it's certainly in the conversation, but I couldn't say top three.

But that's just me. And who the fuck am I?

aside from movies in its own franchise this reminded me of Raiders of the Lost Ark the most. the final setpiece in particular with Max hopping car to car punching and dodging shit, it was classic Indiana Jones.

I think it's sad that people are talking about movies that they think might be better action movies than Fury Road and I'm the first person to mention Predator.
