This happened in Greece a few days ago. Our TV sucks as much as everyone's but i think we get the trophy of incompetence with this one. Unless you know of a worse example (good luck with that).

There is this movie "The Interview", a satire/comedy that has a scene with a North Korean girl singing some vile shit about America in some kind of public event. So our awesome reporters saw the scene somewhere and.... they thought it was real. Without checking if it is indeed real or not, they reported it in the news anyway.

Couldn't find a video with this one report alone but i found the whole news report, skip to around 1:07:40

I just love how shocked these people are by this. They talk about "hate speech" and how "they use a little girl to spread their hate to people", etc. Now, it could be some kind of propaganda. And it's not like something Kim wouldn't do. But even then it would still be amazingly stupid because this movie is somewhat known and recent enough. But i doubt it. It's just reporters who don't give a shit.

Nearly 75 years later and still the worst major paper in the country, barring maybe the WSJ.

Holy Shit. This is ridiculous :D

How about cnn a couple weeks ago saying sources were telling them they found evidence of trump and Russia colluding. Now a couple days ago they report Russia only "tried. "

I'm amazed Trump didnt try to renact this himself.

But considering the surprise and the mood of the country that night, he actually did the right thing trying to not overly gloat about his victory.

Dude he repeatedly tweets about beating every outlets predictions. It's almost a daily occurrence.

CNN and Time Magazine's features on Operation Tailwind

Basically, CNN's editorial staff exaggerated the events of this military operation and stated that the US used nerve agents on American defectors and the Vietnamese villagers that were harboring them during the Vietnam Conflict.

The Pentagon launched and investigation, resulting in CNN and Time retracting the story and overhauling their editorial management.

For non UK gaffers.
Imagine the night before Katrina or sandy someone called up the station and said it was gonna hit. then weather forecaster basically told everyone on air the station received a call from a worried viewer, don't worry about its fine nothing's going to happy. Not a chance . Slam cut to the next evening and Wrecked

Iraqi WMD reporting by US media bar none.
In terms of "raw fail that completely changed the course of human history" this takes the cake for at least the past century.

Time will tell if the broader US media giving Trump a pass on literally everything during his candidacy was an even bigger fuck up.

By far for me, how Pulitzer and Hearst practically ignited the Spanish American war.
...And this the century prior.

He was right though, there wasn't a hurricane.

I was about to post the video of that reporter reading out the names of 5 pilots that turned out to be a prank, but damn OP, yours take the cake.

The german reporting during the beginning of the Crimea stuff was pretty bad. Almost every time they said the Ukraine troops that attacked were Russian troops, then 2 days later had to correct those mistakes....

Hahaha ANN7 was a joke network.

The number of times ive watched reporters acting like its their first day in front of a camera. In many cases its almost like they didnt even know they were reporters, like they just dragged someone of the street and told them hold this mic and read these cue cards.

Clinton campaign pushed the media to give him a platform during the primaries with their insane "pied piper" strategy. Then they got addicted to the ratings.

For me, the biggest fail in western coverage is the lack of anything that doesn't interest their respective governments.

It's absolutely disgusting how little coverage there is on atrocities taking place around the world on an almost daily basis, (in Israel for example). Why, because they want to generate hits. Either that or the message is controlled.

I never actually watched it myself, I just followed all the failures.

Someone made a drinking game out of it:

Not the same type of fail, but french television interviewing the Charlie Hebdo terrorist on the phone while they were on the run and the other terrorist while he was holding hostages in the jewish shop. Fucking disgusting, doing the "exclusive interview" angle instead of helping the police while lives were on the line.

There was the time British broadcaster ITV launched its new flagship documentary series Exposure with a hard-hitting look at the links between the IRA and Gaddafi, featuring footage of a helicopter getting shot down by Libyan weapons that would be sold to the IRA.

Problem was that the footage was from the video game ARMA. ITV took the episode down and claimed the real footage had accidentally been swapped with an identical clip from a video game somehow and they would reupload the real thing. I don't think they ever did.
