WSJ: Nintendo Earnings: What to Watch

Just my two cents but... I think people are missing the mark with this SNES mini they keep dreaming up.

I feel Nintendo Classics are coming to the Switch, with specialized controllers. I think this is the reason for discontinuing a product that would eat into sales of the Switch and the streamlined model for the future.

now this I'd get behind. Nes and SNES controllers for Switch VC would be amazing.

Best move imo:

Make a upgraded NES Mini and a SNES mini that has wifi to DL from the new Nintendo VC. Make this cross buy with the switch. Make the controllers wireless, and compatible with switch.

I think it shows there is much more demand to play these games on a miniature version of the machines people loved, than to play them on their new console. Making the controllers wireless though and the game compatible with the switch just gives both pieces of hardware more value for very little cost.
That's a great idea!
My guess is still that they'll release a 15 games SNES Classic Mini for $80 with wired controllers with 1 m cords and no wifi/ethernet. And we'll all rush out to buy it just like the NES Mini. Prepare to preorder as soon as they appear!

dragon quest, monster hunter, and pokemon would be a good way to guarantee some rpg fanbases on the platform early on. this thing could really explode in its second year knce all the major franchises are in place and gen2 games start to hit.

Why won't Nintendo hire out Obsidian for a high budget, ultra niche wrpg on Switch?

Just leaving money on the table. There could be thousands of copies sold.

I am a little surprised no one tapped Obsidian to finish up whatever they were working on for Microsoft.

But then I guess there's a multitude of reasons why.

I think IT would be amazing if they opened the mini/classic platforms up for new (indie) game development. New licensed 8-, 16-bit games of Nintendo's classic and new franchises.

I'd be really surprised if Capcom just starts off with MH5.

Though I thought for sure that they would port MHXX to Switch for a simultaneous launch, so maybe I'm just dumb.

It would be quite a jump in support from SF 2 to MH 5.

I would love to see it happening tho. Another MH Stories would be rad too.

Possibly, depending on whether investors are disgruntled over Nintendo stopping production of the NES Mini Classic.

It wouldn't need an E3 reveal announcement considering how well the first one did in getting exposure.

Investors actually asked Nintendo to stop it.

- what the f... you do, we could sell this at double price
- can't up the price now, would be bad PR
- well shit just discontinue it and re release it after years more expensive
- ok, meanwhile here Snes mini, 10 games included, download more game through store, only 199$

Nintendo going from just over £100m profit to nearly £675m in the space of a year would be pretty astounding given the products they have had on the market.

To be honest I'd be much more interested in NES Classic if it was somehow tied to the Nintendo Switch family of products.

I am a little surprised no one tapped Obsidian to finish up whatever they were working on for Microsoft.

But then I guess there's a multitude of reasons why.

They never got the final greenlight on production for Stormlands. They obviously had prototypes and such but Microsoft pulled the plug prior to it entering full production. It wasn't a project where it got near completion before being cancelled.

The concepts behind Stormlands did come out eventually though, just as an isometric real-time-with-pause PC game instead of (presumably) a high budget Action-RPG. Tyranny has a lot of the same ideas baked into it along with other failed pitches Obsidian had in the past:

Feargus Uraqhart said:
The story of Tyranny's origins go pretty far back. We pitched a project called Fury in 2006 that was based in a world that had been laid waste by a magical apocalypse. From there, we started thinking more about the idea, and started pitching a game called Defiance in 2009. Defiance is where we really embraced the idea of making a game in a world where evil already won.

Move ahead a couple of years, and we did take some of the ideas from Defiance along with some new ones and pitched a new game called Stormlands. This pitch became the Xbox One launch game we were working on. However, that game was more like Fury when it came to it being about playing in a world after a magical apocalypse.

After that game had been cancelled, we returned to the ideas we had come up with for Defiance. We began building a more in-depth world around the idea along with thinking how could we really let the player understand that evil won the war. That spawned the thought about letting the player take part in the conquering of the world itself as a part of character creation.

Hmm wasn't MHX regarded as somewhat disappointing? I could see that as a good reason to just go ahead with 5.

It would be nice if they hit it just for him :'( I think they would have hit it easily had they been able to manufacture unlimited Switch consoles to satisfy demand.

More expensive with less games is my bet - $99 / 20 games.
Would be nice if they bundled the 2nd pad. It's a family thing, should have done the same with Nes classic.

I hadn't thought of this angle but I think you're right on the money here. Good idea.

Do we get a crazy-ass investor's Q&A session with these? Those things are a hoot!

Nintendo last year released a revival version of its Nintendo Entertainment System console that originally hit the market more than three decades ago. Thought it has been popular, Nintendo has decided to halt production
It's all according to keikaku:

"Leaving money on the table"
- Nintendo's corporate motto.

"I'm sorry but I have been sitting here listening to you talking about video games for more than an hour. Why spend so much time on such a trivial matter? Also I want to know how the love hotels do and when do you launch your new playing card set"

Jeez, only a year ago where they dropped the "NX in March 2017" and "Zelda only at E3" bombs and GAF was rolling. Heh.

Who knows what they'll say this week.

This is gonna be pretty interesting.

Remember last year, we all expecting the official NX announcement with lots of rumours. All that disappointment when they said it was delayed to March 2017.

Those were the days.

I bought an nes mini at retail price and will do the same for the snes mini but i will do whatever it takes to get an N64 mini even though i'd rather not play those games ever again.

It's already been a year, huh.

Kimishima- "It's happening guys. Metroid Prime 4, FFXVI, Mother 4, Star Tropic 3 by Retro, F-Zero SX, Star Fox 64-4, Kingdom Hearts 3, FFVIR, Chrono Break, Pokémon Open World MMO, Kid Icarus Uprising 2 and more will be shown at E3. Please be excited."

Retro...

Basically reads like they are intentionally shorting the market of the NES classic. They don't care if their fans can't get one, as long as the brand is boosted.

Guess all those "Nintendo is doing it on purpose" posters might be right.

I'm not talking revenue, I'm talking about costs. The analysts are apparently anticipating less revenue than last year but far higher net profits, which would indicate that operating costs would be far lower for this year.

My guess is that the R&D costs were expensed last year. There could also be some depreciation, amortization, and tax voodoo going on. The figures were a little surprising for me too, but it makes sense from a certain angle.

EBITDA is generally a more useful indication of company performance (that's what is used internally)

That's not what it reads like it all. To me it's "we are making SNES classic soon so we need production space for Switch and that" with a subtext of "this thing got hacked to hell and back and it blew up in our faces, kill it kill it kill it."

"Hey we heard you liked Zelda BotW at E3 last year and now when the game is out so we are focusing 100% on BoTW at E3!"
