Details soon! Looks like we know what they're using the Microsoft Theater for this year. No live press conference?

Great news!
But somehow disappointed by no ARMS tournament nor live conference (not that I dislike the digital event, on the contrary)

Nice! I hope these kinds of E3 competition events remain a trend for Nintendo.

Though I kinda wish this one was for both Splatoon 2 and Arms.

Pretty much expected after the tournaments set up from previous E3s. Glad we'll see more of it as a tournament game though.

Hopefully Arms can join in the fun as a pre-release promotion.

I honestly find Splatoon boring to watch.
Would've perfer ARMS tho because I feel it needs it more.

But at least they are doing these tournamentss. Smash and Nintendo World Champion were great

I fully expected this to be the way they reveal the game and try to work that eSport/competitive angle with the new spectator mode they are implementing. I'm very hyped to watch the prosquids in the finals.

I'm pretty sure Splatoon Switch reveal will be at the end of the tournaments they are running. Winning teams from Europe, US, Japan and the World will probably win Switch and participate on a World Nintendo Tournament coinciding with the Splatoon launch for Switch.

I just don't see how there could be any other way to reveal the game and the new features they are looking to implement to make Splatoon viable as a spectator game.

Here is what I wrote down in a similar thread some time ago about Splatoon and eSports:
Is Nintendo positioning Splatoon as an eSports game?

I honestly find Splatoon boring to watch.

Splatoon on the Wii U didn't have spectator mode so you were forced to watch it from a single perspective. I can totally understand finding this boring
Splatoon 2's spectator mode and more rapid gameplay changes the way the game can be viewed. I think watching squids coordinate their specials or get multi-splats is going to be extremely interesting for me to watch.

Just to quote myself from 2015 before the updates were even finished:

Anyhow I'm interested in watching competitive Splatoon, it will be a completely different game than the one we are playing right now. As I've said time and time again - the game has a lot of depth to it that an outsider might skim over. I've played Dota2/CS A LOT and see Splatoon as very fun to watch. Hence one of the things I really want is Spectator mode.

Spectator mode is by far the biggest thing missing from Splatoon if it wants to be an eSport. Being able to watch a game switch between players, free view, see the map etc etc etc. The depth is there but without Spectator mode it's difficult for someone casual to see unless they go out of their way to watch a high level stream on Twitch. I've played in a game with a bunch of A+ on Team Speak and once everyone in a team knows their role and you don't get unbalanced teams for certain maps majority of games go down to the wire. Frankly the game design is most awarding in such close matches and that's what I enjoy watching.

Note that they have booked the Theatre (Room 411) of Los Angeles Convention Center. It's a 299 fixed seating venue, I suppose that could be enough for a tournament.

It's fun to watch when the people playing it really know what they're doing and aren't just games journalists or whatever

I agree that ARMS definitely needs the push more. Hopefully both have a tournament.

I'm super interested to see how many people will watch this and how well it will be received. Could go a long way to see if Splatoon 2 will be a popular esport.

Seriously can not wait to get my hands on this. Splatoon is my favorite game alongside the new Zelda and Witcher 3 in the past 10 years.

This is me when it comes to Turf Wars at least. Hopefully everyone is familiar with that and they either go with one of the Ranked modes or a new mode

I guess this rules out the possibility of a smash 4 port

Sighhhhhhh

How'd you even draw that conclusion from this?

Edit: Wouldn't make sense for a port of 3 year old game to garner more attention than a new game Nintendo is trying to promote.

Wish they'd spend as much time as the can showcasing unannounced games or games that have been barely shown off at all. Splatoon 2 just had a direct and a multiplayer demo...

Sweet deal, and a nice showcase for Spectator Mode. But I hope they squeeze in other games between rounds of Splatoon 2. Like it'd be cool to see 2v2 in ARMS, Battle Mode in MK8DX, Swap Mode in Puyo Puyo Tetris, Battle Mode in Super Bomberman R...

Heck, even a timed "any percent" speedrun of Breath of the Wild — imagine how hype that would be. :)

Really would've been the perfect year for another Nintendo World Championship.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

Splatoon is the biggest piece of software overall until Mario Odyssey and the biggest software period in Japan.

Nice! How is Splatoon online community on Wii U these days? Worth picking it up now to get primed for the sequel?
Splatoon 1 is absolutely worth picking up, especially since it has a fantastic single-player campaign with levels that feel straight out of Mario Galaxy, and one of the best final bosses in any game ever.

Spectator mode should be great.

Makes me wonder how they'll handle the players and commentators since this seems like it will all be new territory even though this is a sequel.

Which is why it's big enough to carry itself at its own promotional events. For other games E3 will be their only big opportunity. And surely Nintendo will have other new IP/franchises ready to go for Q1 and Q2. There's not gonna be another e3 for those games.

Nintendo will spend three days showcasing upcoming Switch titles via Treehouse Live. No one has better E3 coverage than Nintendo.

Never expected Nintendo to be the first one to start my hype engine for E3, can hardly wait.

So Digital Event and they use the theater for this tournament like they used it for the Nintendo World Championship and the Smash Invitational before

Wouldn't having Splatoon 2 doing its own thing make more room for the things you wish they were doing for the actual showcase though?
