Atelier Sophie |OT| The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

Finished the game. Overall, a great game to start a series.

Just to be sure, is there a true end in this game ? If so, what are the requirements ?

There's only one ending. You get an extra scene and trophy after you beat it if you created a philosopher's stone before defeating the last boss, but that's it.

Welp, gotta try that again later then >.>

I have the recipe but I am not doing anything above the alchemist level that I had. There's still a few recipes undiscovered too:

-Slaying Light elemental
-Slaying two creatures, which I thought they were going to be in the last area
-Breaking Trust 5 times (no idea what this is)
- Skill Positive release or something like that.

Does anyone knows where I can find the creatures and what the two last mean ?

the first 2 are from the requests you take on. the 3rd is canceling 5 requests. (i think) the last is for using sophie's 300% defense skill

The slaying ones are mostly rumor monsters, I believe, which require you to purchase a separate rumor about glowing stones first.

You get a bonus scene during the ending if you made a philosopher's stone prior to beating the boss, which is incidentally the only missable trophy in the game. That's about it. I miss the multiple endings from previous games.

I can kind of see why they cut the multiple endings, but I miss them too. Makes replaying the game a lot less compelling if there's little reason to optimize to get all the ending flags.

What's that new DLC zone?
Just a bonus dungeon with high-level enemies?

Also high quality materials and the best traits in the game if you are willing to spend the time to farm them. It's worth running through there and filling your basket a few times before you prep end game items and equipment if you are planning on taking down the optional bosses for the platinum. You don't need the absolute best traits unless you want to kill the DLC bosses on hard/despair.

Just unlocked the dollmaker stuff. What's the combination of stuff that doesn't make Plachta look like a sex doll? This is ridiculous.

Huh, thread's dead. Shallie made it to 13 pages, and this is a way better game than Shallie!

Just finished it, though I still have a bunch of trophies to net before Platinum. I'll probably actually do it this time, though. Wrote up some thoughts for the 52-game challenge thread but some quick notes:

- The tetris system and remaking your cauldron every so often is neat and has a lot of potential. Once you really get into it, it's just as fun to minmax as the Dusk systems were.
- Combat's not as fun because it's more mindless. 90% of situations on Normal don't require much more than hitting X as fast as possible to select attack on everyone quickly. I also miss being able to pick and choose supports; poor low-defense, low-HP Sophie being asked to tank everything during support guard because the game picked her randomly a bunch of times kind of sucks.
- Locking better items and traits behind battle difficulty should be highlighted better; it's nearly impossible to make Velvetis on your own without switching to Hard and farming Super Punis (who, btw, annoying). It's great, though, that you can switch difficulties at will.
- As with most Atelier games, I wish for UI improvements. This is especially true on the PS4, which in theory has more option thanks to the touchpad. Touchpad click to open the encyclopedia entry for a displayed item was a godsend, but I would also love shortcuts for "what items use Fuel ingredients?" and filter options on ALL container displays, not just the ones you see at the cauldron/container view. Finding the right trait during armor/weapon synthesis sucks.
- In a game full of dumb outfits, Corneria's outfit is 200% dumber than everyone else's. That's saying a lot given half of the costumes Plachta has to wear.
- WHY IS PAMELA SO CHILL THIS GAME, SHE DOESN'T EVEN TRY TO SPOOK ANYONE OUT THIS GAME, I DON'T LIKE IT NO SIR

Anyways, a better Atelier game than I expected given the initial reveal, a lot better than Shallie, and a fantastic foundation for a new trilogy. Super excited for Firis next year!

How does the game run on Vita¿ I have the PS4 version but it seems I won't be able to play it for a while so I might jump to Vita. Can anyone help¿

Reupping this because I just noticed that all 5 themes can now be bought on PSN (at least in EU), pretty sure they weren't available before...

Just wanted to point out the game is 50% off for Prime members on Amazon right now ... silly that it's locked to Prime, but just FYI

For anybody interested, Amazon has the PS4 version for $20.99.

Probably I will bite. Still wondering if I should though, playing Totori atm and have Meruru and Ayesha in my backlog.

only $20? That's damn tempting, but if I bought it now, I wouldn't even get a chance to play it until late spring/early summer with FFXV, P5, Tales of Berseria and Neir all coming out.....

Great deal. I enjoyed it a lot more than Escha & Logy and Shallie. Doesn't reach anywhere near the series' personal highs of Totori and Ayesha imo, though.

Back to $50 now.

Glad I bit that. Now waiting til Monday for Amazon to deliver the game.

So far the only one I have played completely is Rorona Plus, including a platinum. Totori Plus is great but somehow I seem to prefer Rorona. Is Sophie like any of those two? I understand the time limit is gone (dunno if I will like that. That was one of the reasons I preferred Rorona more, less time to do everything) and the battle system was really simplified here.

So, the game came out on Steam. Anyone playing that version?

I'll buy it this night. Not sure when I'll be able to start it, but I'm very excited. Should be a very relaxing game.

I'm playing it, it's great, I wouldn't call it relaxing, though

Really? That's the impression I got from the Steam trailer, didn't look too much into it. All I know is that they removed the time limits, the music in the Steam trailer is great and the protagonist is cute.

Is it your first in the series?

nope, I've played them all, and IMO Sophie is most stressful Atelier game of them all, because of stamina, fast monster respawn times and aggressiveness and I don't really think there is no time limit, because time goes by and fast, what would be a point of having it if it was unlimited?

Chill.

1. Stamina? You mean LP? That's was in Totori, for one. And it wasn't much of a factor then so much as a way for some bosses to weaken you. It's completely unnecessary in Sophie, and pretty much a non-factor.

2. Enemies are annoying but hardly stressful.

3. There is absolutely no time limit, just a ridiculous time of day and weekend/weekday system. Affects when events happen, what items you get, and the monsters in the field. The game will never ever end. Even after you beat the final boss.

chill? I'm freezing here

no... it wasn't, at least I don't remember it being any issue, even if it was, it did affect your combat abilities too? Seriously, I don't remember it at all.

annoyance is calming now? whoa, I'd like to be you

that's good to know, but wait you can't possibly mean that game events are not tied to time in any way too, can you?

ability to play a game after the game ends has nothing to do with time aspect, but if it really doesn't affect anything, then I can stop stressing over it. Well, I'll find out this soon enough.

I was more thinking about the narrative and character interaction than the actual combat gameplay. I'm more than ok with some "stressful" gameplay.

Souls games are my go to games when I just want to relax, for example.

in that regard, Atelier games aren't stressful, and that's partly why we like them so much

Right now I've got Sophie and Rorona sitting here in my backlog (lovingly referred to as "The Beast That Will Never Die").

I'm wondering which would be better to play first, I know I hear rumblings of time limits on the earlier games, and I don't know if that means I should play Rorona first? Or if it's irrelevant and I should just flip a coin and start alchemy-ing stuff.

Sophie is a game that isn't difficult but goddamn if i don't hate this light elemental and i want to punish anyone involved in the creation of that demon lord boss

Aside from those 2 encounters , the game is actually fairly enjoyable.

what's a point of the expert cauldron? I don't see any advantages of it, but maybe I'm missing something. The practice cauldron seems so far superior than other two, but maybe I'm missing something.

Once upon a time someone told me I should play a game in this series and I picked up Atelier Totori Plus for the Vita. The beginning of that game made me put it down pretty quickly, but clearly someone likes this series since it has 17 games now.

If I were to give things another shot, what would be a good starting point?

What are you looking for / What systems do you have ? The Atelier games have tried a lot of different things over the years (the Iris and Mana Khemia subseries are pretty much straight up JRPGs for example).

I have recent Playstation and Nintendo systems available.

I like RPGs with interesting systems, and it seems like these would qualify, but I never got off the ground in Totori.

I've been playing through this on PC and I'm loving it so far. I feel like it has really good pacing and a nice old school rpg feel which I really like. The soundtrack is also fantastic, the game kind of reminds me of Radiata Stories.

I'd like to pick it up on PS4 as well but I'm wondering whats the chance of finding the limited edition because I'd like it. I wish I discovered this game earlier.

Mouse/keyboard controls pretty decent?

Yo.

Can anyone direct me to a summary of events that happen in the Sequel Episode DLC that was apparently only released in Japan? Surely someone must have played it and summarized it on a wiki or something, right?

My google-fu is failing me.

Sorry, I got nothing.

I couldn't find it either, I only know what's it about, but I couldn't find any translation or even summary.

Already mentioned in the Firis OT, but just in case: the sequel episode DLC was released yesterday in Europe and North America for PS4 and Vita (it's called "Latter Days" in English), and will be coming to PC "shortly." It's a free download, and takes about an hour and a half. Make sure you also download the 1.01 patch on PS4 and Vita, as the DLC won't work without it.

I just played through the whole thing in one sitting. There's not too much to it--a little bit of fighting, a little bit of synthesis, and a whole lot of sleeping to trigger the next cutscene event. It probably works a lot better for someone still going through the post-game stuff, as opposed to me loading up my platinum save. If you don't feel like firing up Sophie again, I'd say you're fine to just watch it on YouTube (a few people have already posted videos).

Thinking about buying this game. I already have the entire Arland series (Rorona, Totori, and Meruru) but have not completed them all yet. I heard this one has new mechanics and doesn't pressure the time as much. Is that true? Even if not, is it still an OK place to start, even if I haven't finished the Arland series (or even played the Dusk series)?
