How did we get 4% Neanderthal DNA?

How is it possible that OT is asking such a question? There is obviously only one way how the DNA got into our shared DNA pool. Fucking fucking and fucking.

kidnapping and rape. plain and simple.

sapiens are animals. animals purpose in life is to survive and procreate. willing or unwilling. it is innate.

OP you made that post and you didn't even link the right speaker.

Svante Paabo is the scientist who sequenced both Neanderthal DNA and Denisvan DNA (as well as a whole bunch of ancient DNA since he started this business with his graduate thesis.)

He is not a bad English speaker either. John Hawks is a famous face for the whole anthropology study but he dig fossils from the ground he is not a lab guy.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!

That's not the question the OP is asking.

So what you're saying is some early homo sapiens guys were getting cucked by neanderthal dudes. I can just see the greentext caveposting now...

The issue is that Neanderthal men weren't all that different looking from Sapiens and recent studies suggest they were of similar intelligence level.

There's no reason to assume that. Like I said, the problem lies in the assumption that Neanderthals were either less intelligent or less developed than Sapiens at the time they lived together.

This is the reason why the most common answer in this thread is "rape." Because people are holding onto a Hollywood stereotype that Neanderthals = Cavemen or that they looked a lot closer to apes.

Lots of folks in this thread seem to think Neanderthals weren't humans.

And that they were more 'archaic' than then-contemporary H. Sapiens.

And that ancient human species/sub-species knew they were discrete species/sub-species.

Man, can you imagine the racism if Neanderthals were still alive?

We have extreme racism in our own species, I can't even begin to imagine the racism that would exist between two intelligent human species.

My dad and I recently did 23 and Me, and we came back as 99 and 98 percentile for Neanderthal DNA variants - includes being slightly taller than most humans, not having a hairy back and not sneezing at dark chocolate or something...

He was very confused, and I told him:

- Either our ancestors were pretty
- Or our ancestors were sex slaves

what does any of that have to do with the fact that both species are animals and raped eachother? how else do you get one species dna in another species? by cross breeding.

I think everyone on GAF has 4% horse DNA.

yeah. in the pants.

If it was like a lot of human history, it was from slaughtering all the men, boys, and non-virgin women and capturing the rest.

Well, they aren't around anymore. So that kind of already gives us a clue to what happens when two intelligent human species interact.

tl;dr at the bottom.
Something that really pisses me off is that very early reconstructions of Neanderthals were racist. I remember this one reconstruction of what looked a really hairy black man, and there may have been worse ones; I don't know if this was before or after it was discovered how much bigger their cranial capacities were or just from the assumptions of how Erectus or other African homo species looked, but Neanderthals were pale - modern reconstructions are much different.

And that's just the thing, those who are of purely African descent, are the purest homo sapiens alive. And that makes sense, because it is believed that man originated in Ethiopa right? So if you're 100% black, you are 100% homo sapiens. Almost the rest of the world have at least 1-4% Neanderthal DNA. So I just wonder, it's just such a beautiful, charming, alluring, and ultimately fascinating thing to think about.

Yeesh.....

Man, pure Africans lucked out on that one.

There's no such thing as a "pure" African. All humans have Neanderthal DNA to some extent, and all humans share a direct ancestor in the very recent past, as recently as a 2/3 thousand years ago.

Also, nothing in that picture, or recreations of Neanderthals comes off as racist to me. Most have pretty light skin, actually. And they look hairy because they were hairy. They needed that hair to keep warm in Europe.

I thought interspecies relations resulted in sterile offspring

For a certain definition of species. You can have geographical separation of species capable of producing viable offspring yet become classified as separate species due to non-interaction (and in this way, non-breeding).

I actually wonder if Neanderthals were smarter than modern humans.

They were not. There were no artifact excavated from the Neanderthal sites you can qualify as art or religious. Even in the same cave that carried both Neanderthal and modern human artifacts, the human ones were much more "spiritual."

However I have a pet theory that modern human mixing with a little bit of Neanderthal DNA give human a little extra intellectual boost. My reasoning is that Africans (with 0% Neanderthal DNA) had never developed their system of writing, or large scaled cities despite thousands of years of contact with the middle eastern region, which was the cradle of earliest civilization. This kind of view can be labeled as racism. That's why I don't want to talk about it except in actual Neanderthal discussion.

A lot of people actually hold this opinion tho

Isn't aggression another reasoning? The problem with that though is it feeds into the angry black man stereotype

Writing and civilization has nothing to do with intelligence. History is far more complex than that.

Many super complex societies and empires had no writing to speak of, didn't make them any lesser - just different.

In fact, some philosophers thought of writing as something that addled the brains by letting it get lazy.

This video is a good one on civilisation:

So yeah, your claim holds no water and is racist.

This makes no sense because correlation does not imply causality. You're taking two unrelated factoids (that Africans apparently don't have neanderthal DNA and that they didn't develop writing) and making up a link. There are any number of reason for the latter to happen.

(Note that I'm took both assertions at face value here, I'm not really educated enough on the subject to verify either of them)

This kind of view is straight up racism.

We weren't that different allowing a low success rate of compatible genes to mix. This probably happened all the time. It's not like bam we were modern humans. It's not creationism.

Creationism: God made mermaids
Evolution: ancient hominids fucked fish and their offspring evolved into mermaids

these are the only two options, mermaids definitely exist I just proved it

My point is that isolated species would drift in evolution and partially merge as they discovered each other. There is probably a term for this but I'm no Biologist.
