Prey Demo: Opening Hour Thread: Everything is Going to Be OK

I think Bethesda was hoping for word of mouth to carry it like Doom did this time last year but Prey doesn't have the same name recognition as Doom.

Was it ever confirmed that Doom was a great financial success?

I'm sure it did alright, but the game went on sale so quickly, it's easy to think the opposite.

Seeing as how D2 didn't sell well either, and the Skyrim Remaster only sold on its name, I don't know if this ridiculous strategy of holding reviews is working well for them.

There's something off about the way Arkane's games handle. I noticed it with the Dishonored 2 demo and now with this. Both the movement and the aiming feel really stiff and awkward.

I hope I'll get used to it after a while. It's pretty much a deal breaker otherwise.

Edit: Scared the bejeezus out of me when
really loud action music kicked in suddenly. I ran like a bitch. It happened again later and turned out it was one of those things chasing me. This game is too intense for me
.

All this talk of Dishonored got me to download the free PS4 version that came with 1. Worth noting that the code expires IN 3 DAYS. Redeem that code if you have it guys.

What I've played seems cool but I found it frustrating to control on PS4. Hoping the PC version is quality because I'd like to play it.

Played part of the demo, didn't finish the whole thing because it wasn't installed completely. I like it, but I don't love it. Main thing that is off putting about it is the ugly textures and environments, and especially the imput lag that makes it almost unplayable.

Damn, I guess alongside with the terrible marketing, making Arkane use the name Prey really wasn't the brightest idea. Arthur Gies on Prey's lackluster interest levels. Bethesda have managed to make people indifferent to a Shock reboot made by Arkane with writing by Chris Avellone and music by Mick Gordon.

Oh man I already had cauged the general interest towards this game as very low but that is indeed bad. Bethesda seems to have utterly failed to market and generate hype for their immersive sims this time around. Dishonored 1 did very well and I remember them gushing over it at the time, saying how they definitely have a new franchise with it. And then D2 just kind of came and went and very little seems to have paid attention and I can't blame them. I was hyped for D2 but by the time it came even I had little desire to get it at launch and now I have no desire to get it at all with all it's performance problems on PC. PC crowd is a tough market if the performance sucks. Steam page will be lambasted with negative reviews and those will impact the sales and that could potentially be a pretty large piece of the pie to lose. I hope to god that Prey won't have the same problem because the game could be 10/10 in substance but I won't get it if the performance sucks.

Combat feels miserable. Maybe don't make your gameplay based on things appearing right next to you if melee is torture.

I freaking love Arkane's world building, so I'll certainly pick it up in time, but not on day one.

Playing on PS4 and holy hell the controls are bad, input lag literally makes it unplayable for me and getting through the demo was hell, the TAA is also really bad, leaves a lot of what seems to be artifacting?
Hoping the port will be good considering that they aren't using a custom engine this time and instead are using cryengine.

I learned about this game about three weeks ago (maybe I had seen something, but dismissed it because of the name? I'm not even sure) and got really hyped immediately. And I frequent GAF and watch all gaming conferences. I'm not even sure how you can hide your game that well.

Really on fence with this game after super dodgy Dishonored 2, ended up abandoning it. Got bored of performance issues and doing mission QA for devs so they would fix (they never did) bugs that ruined No kill & No alarms run.

What they do this time around? Demo on all platforms, but PC.

Why? <.<

I actually dig the demo they showed long ago. Until they bankrupt that team and took over the franchise.

If this bombs too then Arkanes gonna some massive downsize.

Finished the demo. I'm definitely interested in the story but man I was not feeling the controls. Really felt stiff and not very precise at all, so while I do want to know where the story is going, I think the gameplay just kind of kills it for me.

A bit surprised by the general tone of this thread, especially after how much I loved Dishonored 2.

Well I'll get to play it tomorrow and come to my own conclusions

The controls are stiff for sure, but the environment and narrative are selling me.

For 35 bucks, I'll give it a shot

I had to turn off the audio because the frantic enemy music got annoying real quick.

After coming off Dishonored 2, movement feels more sluggish. Plus some bad framerate hiccups on Xbox.

Agreed with the bolded. I've been unable to describe it. I've used the phrases cheap, janky, weird, and on the verge of breaking to try and capture it. It feels like someone took the engine from a F2P game and shoved it in a top-tier big budget game. It's infuriating.

I don't think I'm gonna be playing this for a while so I'm close to cracking and just downloading the demo.

What a demo!
You can spend a few hours trying differents abilities and exploring everything. My congratulations to bethesda for making a demo so long.

I love it the game, remember me to bioshock or system shock. Great atmosphere and gameplay and good possibilities with the different abilities you have and the weapons. Specially the gun can shoot white spheres and go where you want in the levels. And i liked the enemies and the effect in the beggining of fake live like a big brother. Good graphics and great design.

Fantastic sensations the demo gave me.

It would be extreamly painful...
I'm all for another game, and the concept of a mimic enemy is a really good idea: but making the most common enemy a knee high spider thing that moves about quickly, then making your means to deal with them a wrench, then having input lag and generally bad feeling controls on PS4 makes for the WORST combination.

This was pretty much my experience as well. Came in hopeful based on previews but the controls feel legitimately poor and not suited to the fast enemies at all. The soundtrack is also extremely annoying and grating. The atmosphere itself is cool and I generally like Arkane games (really enjoyed Dishonored 2). I'll wait for a deep price drop if I bother at all.

I fully played through the demo on my PS4 and enjoyed the story, but I am going to cancel my pre order. The jump scares are just way too much for me, I know its the point of the game but I feel kinda stressed out after just an hour and this game isn't relaxing me, its making me super tense. I like the idea of any single item can be the enemy and its cool as fuck in theory but goddamn after the 5th or 6th time where I was clutching my chest, I don't think I can do a 20-40 hour game like that.

Second, the "enemy music" KEPT PLAYING for a long time after something spotted me, and it got loud as hell. I don't know what the hell is going on with it but the constant LOUD SCARY MUSIC FOR 5 MINS was not fun at all, even after I killed the enemy it took a few mins usually for the music to stop.

On PS4 Pro the FOV feels a bit gimped up, right after a mimic attack it usually spins around a bit and trying to find it again is frustrating as hell with this FOV. Also the interface for using computers was awful, the d-pad does nothing and you have to use the controller as a mouse, which is pretty frustrating. I don't know why the d-pad doesn't work.

I really did enjoy the story I saw and will probably play this at some point but it doesn't really feel like a must-play right now.

I've played through the demo twice now on the PS4, although I agree with control lag issues reported here...the game itself doesn't seem too bad, although I would probably want to play it on PC (after 6mths worth of patches)

The music is horrible though.....not because it is out of sync with what is happening on-screen, it is just obnoxious and does not suit the atmosphere of the game at all.

Does the demo end at all or just leave you free roaming the lobby area ? I was greeted with the "thankyou for playing the demo" notice but I was not booted out of the game or anything....so I just spent time roaming around, with lots of demo-locked out areas and places I didnt have the access codes for until I got bored and quit.

You can roam the lobby as long as you want even after you finish the plot section.

And I disagree on the music. Outside of the obnoxious combat music, it sets the tone and atmosphere pretty well.

You can turn the music off or down fyi, which includes the screech that happens when a Mimic triggers. I'd like to see a combat music slider separate from the main one in the retail release.

Doom has 1.6 million copies sold on PC and surely at least that on the two consoles. I'm sure Bethesda was very happy considering that game's tortured development.

I do agree that the no review copies thing is going to bite them in the ass sooner rather than later, potentially even with this game.

I actually dig the demo they showed long ago. Until they bankrupt that team and took over the franchise.

If this bombs too then Arkanes gonna some massive downsize.

The specter of HH's Prey 2 haunting this thing certainly doesn't help, yeah.

I have a Pro and an XB1. Not to ask the obvious, but I should try this on the Pro, yeah?

No, the PS4 version (Pro and regular) suffers from bad input lag, and there don't appear to be any extra optimizations for Pro. Go with XB1 for the demo.

There might be a lot input lag, but I wouldn't say that's my biggest issue with the aiming. It's that the camera doesn't move smoothly and the acceleration feels weird.

Someone said this isn't the kind of game that suffers much from bad aiming, but I beg to differ. This kind of exploration where you're rummaging every little corner is where it bothers me the most.

Also the interface for using computers was awful, the d-pad does nothing and you have to use the controller as a mouse, which is pretty frustrating. I don't know why the d-pad doesn't work.
I'm guessing they didn't want to restrict themselves to the sort of grid layout dpad navigation requires. Although everything I've seen in the demo has been in perfect grids so I dunno.

I'd say the workstations are the least of the game's problems though.

Played the demo on PS4. Yeeesh. I'm still holding out hope. If the PC version runs great I will probably grab it. Also, going mouse and keyboard for this...Using a controller was pretty bad.

I honestly think that's supposed to be there but they didn't implement in time. They give you the option to lock your view and in the options you can make it so it automatically does that with every single interface if you want. I don't know why they would go through all that trouble on consoles if you couldn't navigate the interfaces like a menu with d-pad or analog stick.

The level design and story is interesting, though I don't like the 60s retro future theme or whatever. Does this have anything at all to do with the original Prey, though? Assuming it handles better on PC I might pick it up later on.
