Nintendo confirms no live E3 presentation this year

Why would I care for a live Ravi moment again? I get reactions perfectly fine on YouTube. I'll hear the cheers and applauses of a new Metroid from a smashup of reaction videos on YouTube.

E3 is about the games not the cringiness and the screw ups....

I can't believe people are equating the reactions of the crowd during a live conference to a "totally genuine and not over the top reaction video of some nobody on youtube".

The first is fun, the latter might be the worst most cringe worthy thing on the internet I can think of.

Digital Events are so clearly superior it's not even funny.

The public interaction is largely inauthentic and coming from corporate plants to build hype. Comparing fake reactions on YouTube is pretty apt because of the fakeness of the reactions.

Conference or not, the reactions of a crowd that I'm not a part of have little to no bearing on me.

I mean sure, it might add some flavour to a dramatic announcement - Twilight Princess springs to mind - but in the moment I don't reaĺly register it. I'm too busy being excited for my own sake.

I'm fine with this approach. FWIW, Sony seem to have the presentation of a conference down perfectly, with little in the way of filler. Both have merit.

I hope they keep the snappy format of the latest Direct hosted by Koizumi. Straight to the point and no bs.

I imagine not many will have qualms after all the complaining about the live Switch reveal.

Because there is only a binary choice between doing something not well and not doing it at all, right ;)? You love this company? Great, ask it to raise the bar if you do :).

But you're comparing an E3 conference to a Japan-focused console announcement.

Well we can go back to fireworks with the Wii U announcement. Ravi and the Wiimotes, Cammie Dunway's weird moments, and much much more.

Most everyone that does keep linking to Nintendo's best E3 moments is from 2004 with the Twilight Princess reveal. And it makes me feel like some are just trapped in time and haven't been paying attention to Nintendo's E3's this past decade and how awkward they could get.

I think they've gotten much better with Directs, and far more focused for it. Then add Treehouse afterwards and they go much further in depth with the games that are playable because they don't have to worry about time restraints. They can also talk more with devs about the game and just generally have lots of fun.

Because there is only a binary choice between doing something not well and not doing it at all, right ;)? You love this company? Great, ask it to raise the bar if you do :).

They found their own way to handle E3 that works for them and I enjoy it far more. I don't want to see them do live conferences again with how unfocused and awkward they can be. They tried, and tried, and tried, but finally, in their own way, found something else that works.

Doing a live conference isn't raising the bar, it's lowering it.
I'd love to have them do something fun akin to the muppets or robot chicken bits. The digital events have tons of headroom to improve, that much is true.

Well said. Same goes for me too. At the end of the day, to me, E3 is about what new games get revealed and if they're appealing. I don't care how it's all presented.

I like the direct and treehouse streaming format more, so I am glad they are continuing it. I can't think of any reason why live presentation would be better.

As long as a proper Digital Event is given I will be content. Now the wait for e3.nintendo.com to be updated begins. Last year it was updated on May 5 to reflect E3 2016.

It was last year Thursday. Hoping it's the same this year (May 4).

This conference is based on actual japanese history. There's this giant enemy direct here, you can attack its weak point for massive damage

I'm fine with Directs only. They are shorter, but feel faster at the same time. Live events are a mistake.

Just remember Wii U reveal E3 presentation, E3 2012 and those 30 minutes with Nintendoland, or Switch presentation.

Better if they do another Direct or Digital Event. Those have shown to work well.

I'm okay with them doing their E3 announcements this way. Usually I can just get the highlights as most of the time I'm not too interested in most of what Nintendo is doing but there are a few things in there that may and then I can just google the trailers for them.

Directs ARE raising the bar. If you want to see people cheering, simply tune into Easy Allies or one of the million other streams that re-stream the Direct.

Direct pre-recorded event works, but nothing beats a well prepared conference with insane production values. Last year's Sony event with live orchestra and nothing but games was ace. I kind of expected something similar from Nintendo followed by standard Treehouse streams.

Will def watch the Direct tho. I'm a little short on money, but if it's impressive I'm buying a Switch.

I understand the disappointment in the sense that, had Nintendo announced they were switch(ha!)ing back to a live conference, that would confirm right then and there that they have big plans. The hype would already be through the roof.

I agree that the digital format tends to work better for them. But for now, the possibility remains that they'll do it like last year and focus on one title (probably Mario, in that case) and have no huge reveals planned. And that would be a bummer.

It could still be a hype E3 for them, of course. In fact, I still expect it will. But it might not be.

People say a direct lets Nintendo control the message and minimize those pesky on-stage fuck-ups. But historically, directs have had their share of cringe-worthy moments (any Trinen or Reggie-Trinen segment) and Pele moments (the guy talking about the first level of Mario Bros, big M talking about coming up with game ideas while napping in his garden).
In the end, really the main difference between a conference and a direct is the format, and the direct format is just boring.

Nintendo could do like Sony 2016 and make it all about the games while still making room for an epic moment or two. Imagine the conference kicking off with a live orchestra of Mitsuda-composed Xenoblade 2 theme.

I just did and it's quite boring, compared to that style of presentation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gj3fwoQl8o

There have been dozens of great moments like this in Nintendo Directs.

It's easier to share, and doesn't need the montage you saw in the video you posted, to remove the obligatory dull talking parts.
Maybe if they had a great entertaining speaker, I would change my mind, but Reggie nor anyone I've seen at Nintendo, are qualified to entertain on stage.

And show us the games. A 45mn montage like this with new games, is all we ask for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-mFODSa2VM

The Sony 2016 format is the Nintendo Direct format, just without the wacky stuff and replaced with some orchestra.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but I felt both the Zelda orchestra and the GOW orchestra segments lasted too long.

Awesome to be sure, but by the end of both I just wanted them to get on with it.

They'd be back on stage in a heartbeat if they had any real western software support to show off.

The directs are fine though and we all pretty much know what to expect to see from E3 anyway.
