STEAM | May 2017 - Praeying for Dino Crisis

Not open for further replies.
Morning, SteamGAF.

It's been a rough couple of days for me. Been feeling really discouraged and down, so I think today shall be filled with vidja games.

Probably a day or two of Stardew Valley, a few puzzles in Paint It Back, a movie's worth of puzzles in Slayaway Camp, and something new. Not sure what yet, but something short and with trading cards. Maybe some Rocket League, too, before the free weekend expires. I had a surprising amount of fun with that.

I know that feeling strongly.

Hope you find comfort and relief in the Steam room.

Trails 3rd is so good, seriously much better than those numbers imply.

Owners: 5,852 ± 2,288

I'm thinking of dropping Hollow Knight and then restarting it all over again in the future. I decided to continue you it but I am kinda lost. Still will soldier through the Queen's Garden and see if I make any kind of progress...

I appreciate the kind words (and GIFs) pantsattack, Jawmuncher, Dragon1893, and purseowner. Thank you all. :)

I've had issues with depression and anxiety on and off (mostly on) for... well, the majority of my life, but it's gotten worse in recent years. I was on an upswing these past few months, though, as Prozac seemed to have any panic attacks under control.. until this past Friday... several hours before a friend's wedding I was supposed to attend. Sigh. Needless to say, I didn't make it there. And I've felt somewhat paralyzed and out of it the rest of this weekend because of it. I'm in somewhat better spirits today, though, at least.

SteamGAF has become the thread I visit most, though I don't post much. I've mainly been a lurker most of my long and (non)illustrious GAF life. My girlfriend enjoys this thread, too, though she doesn't have an account. Until about a month ago, she had no idea what Dino Crisis was, but now she's fully aware of its majesty lol

That reminds me, I do need to add many more of you onto my Steam friend's list. I only have like 15 friends there, and most were added recently hah it's fun to see what other GAFers are playing

Is this the start of a friend-off?

Here we go!

I'll be honest: I'm complete dead weight as a Steam friend. I'm just kinda... there. But I'll gladly add y'all to look enviously at your high scores in whatever game we end up both playing. (Or for cool stuff like Dragon Dogma's pawn sharing.)

Same. I don't really do a lot of multiplayer stuff, but it's nice to see high scores and whatever from familiar names.
It's such a shame that so few of you seem to play Hitman though, latest elusive had like 3 names on the friend leaderboard.
Anyways, I have room if anyone wants to buddy up on Steamio.

So I'm going through the UI in Big Picture Mode where I've noticed certain combinations of two character strings are either missing or invisible. Fortunately I'm only using it for tweaking controller profiles but it's still a bit annoying to look at. Any ideas what is going on?

Sounds like your computer has a virus.
I'd recommend it some bed rest and running some CPU benchmarks nonstop to heat it up some.

I really want to play Prey...argh, maybe I'll add it to the backlog. The enemy variety doesn't bug me at all since I really liked RE7 and that was similar.

Note that you can customise your Steam URL in profile settings. Handy to make it easy to remember or easy to reference for others, since Steam names can be changed so easily.

BernardoOne is an inspiration when it comes to Hitman. He's in the top spot of most Hitman stuff I've played. (Absolution and 2016)

I should really play more H2k16, but right now every game I play needs vikings in it. So no dice.
Do people in Steam groups count as friends for matchmaking?

Depends on the game, I imagine.

Battle system wise, it's leagues above it.
I like the battle system in CSH a lot, and consider it one of the best of its kind (fixed positioning), but I wouldn't go that far.

Trails has the massive advantage of having meaningful positioning, which just gives so much more tactical variety and options. I actually think it's an excellent system which is a bit let down by (a) "normal" not really forcing you to explore it and (b) being really slow due to having no way to skip e.g. spell animations. Both of those are easy to fix though, the former by playing on "hard" and the latter by using CheatEngine's sppedhack functions.

Weird, this isn't working for me

I tried my account name and then my profile name and it's coming up with an error for them both

that's actually incorrect, unless you customize it by hand in your profile page, you profile link ends with a bunch of numbers. you can see the link by logging into browser, and going to your profile, the profile page link is your profile link.
Even manually making you only can have that link with your steam name if nobody uses it for their profile link, unlike with account names, these are unique.

It has better music, there, I said it.

how could you? I expect all kinds of blasphemy from Corpekata, but you?!

Well I just bought Hotline Miami 2 for $1 (and Broken Age, too). I just remembered I was on the final boss of Hotline Miami and did not finish it. DAMMIT

Don't use steam on a browser? If you click on your avatar on top right and it goes straight to your profile.
On the steam client you can do the same I guess, click bottom right avatar and you'll be put on your profile, from there do right click > copy page url. You can also enable show url adresss on the steam client, it's somewhere in settings.
This is mine, by the way:

Feel free to add me.

In client: hover over your name (store- library - community - your name) -> profile -> "edit profile" to the right -> custom url

Trails, both in Sky and Cold Steel rarely makes actual use of the positioning even on higher difficulties, with a few exceptions like enemies being too spread out for some melee characters to handle in one turn. Both except Cold Steel on the highest mode (which is a dull grindfest either way) many magic abilities are quickly trivialized by the various CP moves, both in power and in how much easier they are to regain the resource. The battle system is fine but mostly just....bland.

I find the timing and use of items and abilities in Cosmic Star Heroine much more compelling and interesting, not to mention the approach of the much more limited encounters tends to equal many more hand tailored battles

Speaking of combat systems, Expeditions: Viking has done great work to make both small and large combat areas work well. There's concepts of cover, flanking, attacks-of-opportunity, and line-of-sight, which means close-combat melees become a flurry of positioning, while long-ranged battles are done from around corners. There's also a bevy of status effects, which means that even throwing a rock can be meaningful beyond just straight damage (yes, I'm serious). It scales remarkably well no matter the battle area size, too.

I can't say enough good things about the combat. It's very fun and tactical, a huge upgrade over Conquistador's. Like, it's the only game aping XCOM's combat engine without feeling like a pale imitation.

Want to chime in with the continued love for Prey, I'm still flabbergasted that we have a AAA game like this nowadays.
I'll be amazed if anything beats this as my GOTY

Bioshock 1 & 2 > system shock 2

We don't know where Infinite is at. Probably dead somewhere.

You've got to be kidding :/

At this point, I'm convinced Jawmuncher just has terrible taste in games

After playing Bioshock 2 + DLC few days ago Bioshock Infinite is still best Bioshock to me.

Personally I'd say it worst of the 3 but the hate it gets is so overblown

After that it's just sort of an extended epilogue. Just a few extra chapters, nothing that will take long.
Besides, HM is a great game and better than its sequel. Don't get me wrong though, HM2 also has an amazing soundtrack, it's incredibly atmospheric and the narrative will probably stick with you even if nothing groundbreaking (but certainly original).

Well, either you or I are playing it wrong then. I use magic basically every single turn in every battle in TitS SC on hard, and it would be both much more difficult and much more time consuming (given that I can skip spell animations) if I were to stop doing so. By leveraging elemental weaknesses, I often do far more damage than what is possible with any CP ability I have access to. And for many of these spells the positioning is crucial (and often, the determining factor in which spell to choose is whether it can be freely positioned or has its positioning attached to a specific enemy).

And that's just spell positioning, without getting into how crucial party positioning is in many of the boss battles (since they are really challenging).
