Waypoint Thread: Vice City Stories

Last few podcasts have been insufferable. Unsubscribing.

I want Patrick to go back to GB and Danielle to Idle Thumbs :'(

I'm just curious, what have you found insufferable about it? I haven't felt at all like anything done on the podcast has been awful or "cringe" like some people have said in the thread.

Most of it has seemed totally fine to me. I'm trying to see why people hate it so much aside from the people who seem to start fights about feminism/vice hate in the comment sections of Waypoint's Facebook posts.

Yeah I'm not gonna watch 30 second ads for a 1-minute video essay. They feel like they should be interstitials airing on the VICE cable channel or something; aimed at people who are casually interested in games but don't know what Waypoint is yet.

They are posting them on Twitter and as far as I'm aware there's no ads in them (unless I'm not getting them because I'm not in the US)

I went to their site because you guys mentioned Binary Domain. It looks like a freaking mobile site even on desktop, quite off putting.

You should have seen it when their end-of-the-year gimmick theme took over the homepage. It was basically impossible to tell apart the jokes and fanfics from proper articles.
It's weird. The site's layout is so focused on top stories, it looks like a website designed around disposable news items and throwaway stories presented as an infinitely scrolling stream of randomness, but the actual content of their articles often begs to be properly categorized. It would be a shame if their more valuable stories keep getting lost without an easy way to get rediscovered.

I feel like the podcast has only gotten better over time, especially since Rob joined

It's definitely been getting better, but I have mixed feelings about the Waypoint podcast. I actually think I might not love Austin as the host because it feels like occupies so much space on that podcast. It could also just be that the other people don't occupy enough space, besides maybe Patrick? At the same time, if Austin is away I straight up just skip that episode.

Maybe I've been spoiled because Austin's chemistry with the Giant Beastcast crew is amazing and I wish I got that same level from the Waypoint podcast. I still enjoy the podcast, but I use it more as background noise than something I listen intently to, unless they're talking about a game I'm really interested in.

Did Austin at any point mention plans on doing a Nier related podcast with 2B's voice actress, or did I just completely fucking dream the whole thing up?

Coming at this as a Match 3 fan, I just want to hear more P Kleps, Waypoint was great when it first started but as more and more people get added there's less and less Patrick

People are saying the waypoint radio is bad? I really love the way that the waypoint gang interacts. They all have a cool unique perspective on games that I don't get many other places.

i know dani's enthusaistic and all but i like her best when she's talking about her experiences and feelings and crazy jobs and less when she's just going

every time austin says something

professor killa, the new nietszche, yung kafka, the galactus of game, he doesn't need a hypewoman

Is the site incredibly sluggish for everyone else? I feel like I can't even scroll down the page without the whole site constantly hitching for half-seconds at a time.

I'm still months behind on the Woopcasts, but have they talked at all about Divinity: Original Sin 2's Game Master mode? I'm curious what Austin's take in particular is, given his tabletop gaming background. I'll totally skip ahead to hear that talk.

Also, Austin's Unexplored stream was amazing. I kinda stumbled upon it from the site and just ended up watching it. It's a remarkably enthralling little game, never would've noticed it without that stream; now it's on my Steam wishlist. Rougelikes, man!

GM mode got announced yesterday; they haven't recorded one since. I'll bet Austin has a take on it. Whether it comes up, though, *shrug*

And yes, Danielle is the actual best person.

Did you check out the D:OS2 Game Master mode stuff today? Seems like something that you might find rad.

It's neat for sure, but also a little more about building specific spaces and challenges than I tennnnnd to like?

Horror RPGs? I haven't played it but Koudelka is basically medieval Resident Evil with grid based tactical RPG battles. Its sequel/spin-off Shadow Hearts retains some aspects of horror but is much more of a JRPG in structure. The "horror twist" that happens an hour or two in is pretty incredible. Shadow Hearts 2 has even less horror, aside from some BGM and the atmosphere of some dungeons, and the third game is almost a comedy. Great series.

And, of course, Parasite Eve. And I suppose Bloodborne could apply.

I know Battlegrounds streams are kinda old hat at this point, but Patrick and Austin's Battlegrounds streams are Pretty Great, they're kinda role-playing the whole thing as Will and Jaden Smith in After Earth.

Hey that's my tweet. Fun. I responded and asked him if he saw the more freeform options available but didn't get a response. It's obviously a platform built more for specific scenarios than playing totally open-end tabletop but I also think it's the best a game has done to date and can encompass a lot of ad-hoc scenarios as we saw in the Mercer stream that evening.

Breakfast and Battlegrounds is great. Stupid judges week taking Austin away...

Lets hope Danielle and Rob take some time to train Patrick this week. Eye of the tiger and all that. Danielle is obviously the mom, but who will Rob roleplay?

Have to say I haven't tuned into waypoint radio since last year when almost every episode was political (post election). I understand that WP was trying to mix IRL with games, but the way it came across on the podcast was more like hijacking the soap box to personally vent instead of having an intellectual conversation.

Also, beyond the election talk, the approach to almost all topics was seemingly exclusively far left, which is fine, but came across approaching circle jerk territory. I would have liked to think that Austin of all people in the games space would value and seek out a balanced alternative view on topics to avoid the echo chamber and foster meaningful conversation or at least attempt to peel the onion back and discuss why certain tropes continue to exist. The media in general has got us covered on the echo chamber mentality on both sides of the field.

Have they balanced things out and found a unique voice?

I think the mistake you made was assuming the site was going to be a "balanced approach". It's not. They have an agenda for how they want to approach and discuss games. They have said as much in a recent episode of the podcast. If that's not your thing than that's perfectly fine, nobody said you HAD to like it.
