Hey, is the GPD Win supposed to have a g-sensor?

I wiped and clean installed my GPD with the W10 Creators Update immediately after receiving it, installed the driver pack and wifi fix, and I didn't see any Kionix Sensor listed in the Device Manager, even after running the Kionix driver install manually.

The screen doesn't auto rotate, although the manual says it should.

Can anyone else confirm if the GPD Win is supposed to have a g-sensor, and does yours support screen auto-rotation?

First impressions:

+Wow this thing is small.
+Wow it has a full size USB slot.
+No junkware in the default install.
+The screen looks really nice.
+The switch to convert the controls on the fly from Dinput to Mouse to Xinput is just genius.
+It's quiet, even with the fan on.

-Wish it had a webcam so I could use it for Skype.
-Wish it had LTE so I could stick a SIM into it.
-The included screen protector seems just slightly the wrong shape.
-What happened to the g-sensor?
-The touch screen and mouse emulation don't work in the BIOS screen.
-Oh god the Engrish in the manuals.
-No secure boot?
-No light sensor for automatic screen brightness?
-BIOS settings minimal, have to downgrade BIOS to access settings.
-Driver installation is a mess.
-The bundled power supply is scary. It gets extremely hot, smells like burning plastic, and makes high pitched squealing noises while charging the GPD.

Can confirm it does and my screen auto-rotates. Attached a screenshot showing the sensor and the driver version if it can be of any help to you.

Yeah I don't have a "Sensors" category in my Device Manager at all.

Can you tell me what BIOS version are you running?

2.17.1249, build date 10/18/2016 17:43:44 if I'm reading it correctly.

Ah, mine came with the version from Feb 21 2017. Debating whether to downgrade.

Can anyone with the newer BIOS confirm they see a "Sensors" category in Device Manager, and they have auto-rotating display support?

Just got my GPD Win, pretty cool lil thing and I got a question or two, how delicate should I be with this thing? I usually lug around my ps vita in my bag I carry around everyday since its a sturdy piece of kit so I'm wondering if I can do the same with GPD Win.

Also, any tips/advice I should do with the settings?

I haven't had much opportunity to carry it around, but I've opened it up about five or six times now and it seems sturdily constructed going off of that. You can probably treat it as you do your Vita, but it may be wise to keep it in a case in your bag.

As for settings, is your goal battery life or performance? There are several different configurations that are well-suited for both. Download Throttlestop for sure. It lets you control CPU speed and voltage in Windows, so you can limit it for lower-power games/applications and keep it locked on turbo for more demanding ones. There's a slew of Windows and BIOS options you can play around with as well, but it's going to depend on your priorities and what issues you're having with the device.

Yep, might have to use the case, tried carrying it around and sometimes it would turn on by itself.

I suppose battery life for now. Not sure if I wanna be messing with the BIOS stuff but I'll be downloading that Throttlestop thing though. Thanks for the tips.

Got a weird problem with my unit

In my apartment it will detect all surrounding wifi networks except for my own, none of my other devices have this problem

I don't suppose anyone has a link to the newer wifi drivers?

Might see if installing those fixes it

A v2 is in the works but you should wait at least for 2018 but about its power there are 2 possibilities:
1)it will have similar power and price of the v1
2)it will be more powerful but also a lot more expensive(in the case of the use of a Intel Core M3 that alone costs 281 dollars while the current atom z8750 only costs 37 dollars)

...unless the GPD finds a third middle choice that no one considered or knows.

Has anyone tried any of the Paradox grand strategy games on this? What games is it actually capable of running?

Curious if it would be suitable for playing CK2 or something on the sofa. Even if it's not powerful enough, I guess Steam in-home streaming would be an option. Don't know if screen size would be an issue.

I didn't try any paradox game, but in that kind of games fonts are usually really small, you should search for a real 720p screen(not one of those youtube previews!) and visualize it on the GPD Win.

Yeah, you might be right. I tried streaming to my phone at 720p, which is 5.1" vs the 5.5 of the GPD Win, and while I could read it, I think eye strain would set in quickly.

Also tried on a tablet, but the problem is controls. Using a mouse, as soon as the pointer goes anywhere near the top of the screen, the pull-down menu appears. Seems like the search for a portable CK2 machine goes on.

Curious thing i did yesterday, I was playing BloodRayne Betrayal, after an annoying precise platforming section here another one, but no matter how much i tried i have always failed despite i was always almost there, so after half an hour(i think) i decided to change game, but quitting would have meant redoing the entire level, including the first annoying section, so i decided to left the game minimized and to play Batman AO, with my surprise:

-i could hear Rayne responding to inputs and the game music
-unlike what i was expecting it didn't seem to impact Batman's performance, the battery and the heat

when quit Batman i returned to Bloodrayne Betrayal and it was slower, thanks to that i was able to do the platforming section and after a short while the game returned at its normal speed lol.

I wonder what's the next thing i'll realize i can do on the GPD Win, i play on it with a console mentality but it's a pc with all the freedom and flexibility that pc allows.

Man, I'd pay a handsome sum for something akin to one of those Vita grip cases for this thing that had an SSD in it. That would be neat.

Got mine today. Everything's working ok, but I have some vertical "lines" (more like flickering?). They're more noticeable on white or plain color backgrounds and they're present even in the BIOS screen. Anyone have this problem?

I'm thinking of buying a Smach Z whenever it's released (assuming they really found a decent solution to heating and it doesn't throttle much) and I'd like to ask some questions to those of you with a GPD Win:

Sleep and Hibernation - I frequently play in short bursts and I'm spoiled by the Vita\3DS sleep mode. I don't really use sleep nor hibernation on PC and I'd like to know how those work on the GPD Win. Are they reliable? Hibernate should be more reliable than sleep when leaving a game open... or not? If so how long does it take to resume playing? Any issues?

RAM - There's an option to upgrade the Smach Z RAM to 16GB, is it overkill? Would 16GB slow down the waking up from hibernation compared to 8GB? Have you ever felt the RAM on the Win wasn't enough for your needs?

Sleep and hibernation is trash on the GPD Win. It, along with the heat, are reasons why I don't use mine as much as I'd like. It makes it inaccessible and not as easy to just hop in and out. It's a big deal for a portable.

Not sure why people keep coming in here and talking about the Smach Z. It's vaporware.

It's too early to call the Smach Z vaporware. They're still giving out monthly updates to Kickstarter backers, and it seems they're planning to launch manufacturing in October. They're just going through (expected) delays. Definitely give it a couple months post-launch before picking it up though - they're bound to have some issues to work out with the first batch.

I actually haven't had a problem with hibernation, but sleep mode isn't great because of how sensitive the lid is. A tap is liable to wake it up. Hiberantaion has been fine the few times I've tested it in-game (and fantastic for suspending typical usage), though it does take longer to boot back up than sleep mode would. I should time it sometime, but I believe it's still under 30 seconds? I'm typically impatient with these things and haven't found it annoying at all.

e: forgot to comment on the RAM. I haven't noticed the RAM being a bottleneck at all, and I can imagine that 16GB of it on the Smach Z is a ridiculous amount for the specs. Their benchmarks advertise games from a few years ago running around 30 FPS at midrange settings - it's very unlikely that anything the device's processing can comfortably handle would be running a game eating through 16GB, but I could well be wrong depending on the game.

Hm... I check their forum daily, doesn't really look like vaporware talk, unlike the PGS.
I backed them on indiegogo, but I pledged 5$ just to have access to their forum since I had my reservations on their project too.

I'm simply interested in a Windows handeld and I'd like to put to rest some of my concerns.

My plan B is waiting for a GPD Win rev. 2 in case the Smach doesn't see the light or isn't on par with my expectations.

That's more reassuring , thank you.

Thanks, besides the price to upgrade to 16 is ridiculous.

I don't hibernate mine since I'm still wary from the hibernation issues in the SP4. I carry mine around in a sling bag, and it hasn't once turned on in there.

FWIW.

Fun fact, it does not support Qualcomm's quick charge and will simply charge at 5v but it does support USB-PD chargers at 12V 2A which is so much faster than 5V 2.5A

According to the GPD WIN, GPD booth personnel said that they are planning to launch "GPD WIN 2 (tentative name)" terminal that is specially upgraded than GPD WIN which is currently on the market at the end of this year .

We could not get detailed information such as appearance, specs, concrete announcement time, but some hard information was available so I introduced it. As a successor model as GPD WIN rather than GPD Pcket, if you interpret it without permission, it is highly likely that it will appear as a gaming machine for games for Windows OS .
GPD WIN 2 spec

CPU: Intel Core m3 - 7 Y30
Memory: 4GB / 8GB (2 models expanded)
SSD: 128 GB

The person in charge of the booth taught part of the specifications of the hardware that is currently planned. The biggest change is that the CPU is planning to install Intel's 7th generation CPU "Kaby Lake" Core m3-7 Y30 from Atom x7-Z8700 .

I been waiting for a Core m3 GPD, now the problem is the price.....

Does the Core M3 have a better GPU?

Gflops-wise the intel hd 405, Win 1's gpu, is comparable to undocked Switch, the intel hd 615, Win 2's gpu, is comparable to docked Switch.

Take into account that all the Switch games have to run in undocked mode, so games are limited by that, the Win 2 without this limit could run more complex games.

That's... That's a huge upgrade, isn't it? Fuuu. If they can fix the heat, I might upgrade.

Didn't end up liking the GPD Win that much but sure as hell always interested in seeing what they do next, I'm kinda hoping they or someone else make a device with a similar if not alittle bigger then the Switch, understand the market they are going for and seems the majority want the clamshell build.

Seems like the new model is what the first should have been. Better keyboard, better SoC, better cooling, better storage solutions etc. Going by the specs on the XD 2, it'll probably have a 6" 720p screen too. I just hope they aren't rushing this if they're planning to release this year considering the Pocket and XD 2 are also still in development.

Same boat as you, wanted to like the original Win, but couldn't get past the heating issue.

however after playing with the switch a lot; I really prefer the clamshell for some reason ahaha

Have you tried throttlestop? It increases battery life and reduces heat.

I'm a huge fan of portable gaming and GPD WIN 2 may finally be the device to fulfill the dreams of an oldschool PC gamer. I would love to replay some of my favorite PC games on a "handheld", but the current GPD seems just too weak for some titles. I hope the price won't be too high to make my evaluation of the purchase decision easier.

Apparently there are some misconceptions about GPD Win 1 & 2:

-for some reason people think that the GPD Win 1 is weak, it's not, it's able to play many ps360 games at 30fps, so for old school pc games it's more than enough
-for the GPD Win 2 you will have to wait at least the 2018 and it will be expensive, the cpu/gpu alone costs 281 dollars(source official intel site), in comparison the cpu/gpu of the GPD Win 1 costs 37 dollars(source official intel site) and the final price of the GPD Win 1 was 350 dollars(IIRC)

Hope GPD takes their sweet time with the Win 2. I'm a happy 1 owner. It's great but has its issues. Take your time with rev 2 and make it great.

So, greetings everyone. I have been looking at this wonderful piece of tech for a day or two and I am thinking of buying one waaaaaaaay in the future, since saving for it would take a while. But I would like your opinions on the GPD win up to this point. Also I'm getting it to play games from GOG, steam and maybe some slight emulation. Okay maybe a lot of emulation.
