I played ARMS back in 1996 but it was on PS1 and it was a game called Robo Pit

Sure, it didn't look as nice or have an intuitive motion control scheme but the similarities are striking.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really excited for ARMS and I think it's going to be a huge hit but it's interesting to trace back its inspiration.

I played Super Mario Odyssey back in 1996 but it was on N64 and it was a game called Super Mario 64

I don't think Nintendo went "you know what was cool? Robo Pit. Let's invest millions as a new flagship Switch title"
it's an atempt at 3D fighters likely inspired more by Virtua On

There's no doubt that ARMS takes a few keys from older games, Robo Pit is not one of those however. I don't see the similarities as all.

Yeah, well, Cybertroopers Virtual On was first released in 1995 and shares a lot more with Arms (in a good way).

It's closer to Virtual On (Saturn) or Destrega (PS1) due to the combat from a distance mechanics.

EDIT:
Arena based fighting games are nothing new, just like third-person shooter.
What separate Splatoon or ARMS is that Nintendo is trying to make an accessible game in an already established genre with tons of polish.

you have to pick a left and right arm with different properties and fight in a 3d arena

Well, time is a flat circle. There probably isn't anything made at any point that doesn't have a passing resemblance to something that already exists. This is vaguely similar, to be fair.

You honestly don't see the similarities at all? How is that possible?

Ah, I got it. Let me try again.

Nintendo invented this entire concept and genre. No other game like it before. OP is crazy!!!! What an idiot.

Here we learn that two things can look similar if we try hard enough even if they are years apart and even conceived from a totally different situation.

Outside of the camera angle and the fact that you can have a different weapon on each Arm, I'm really not seeing the similarities. This game appears to have more in common with Tank and Mech battlers than arena fighters. Looks like an arcadey version of Mechwarrior.
