How would you react to a Metroid reboot w/ a black Samus

Keeping her design is also pandering. Giving her heels is pandering. Making a new game is pandering. It's a product created to be consumed by people; everything about it is pandering. You just don't want something that wouldn't be pandering to you.
Yeah, let's play semantics, again, you're being as obtuse as you can to dance around the absurdity of the idea. Diverse characters are perfectly fine, but changing an existing character just for the sake of diversity is not only lazy, but it's disrespectful to the original intent of the design of the character.
Ha, just got reminded of this one time where I read a post where someone said their childhood would be destroyed if Link ever became a girl.
People like fictional characters...what's the harm in this? Who are you to judge that this is silly or wrong?

Wouldn't care, you hardly see her without the suit in mainline games and I don't care about seeing more of the existing overarching storyline, so alt-universe plot would be fine.

What I'd be more worried about with such a departure from the norm is the chance of a shitty suit redesign.

Yeah ignoring all the moments in the prime games where the loading screens focus on her face, or where she takes of her helmet, or when she's in her just as recognized form known as "Zero suit Samus."

Compared to the other 99% of the game? Yea. It's not some inherent part of her identity.

Also you can't simultaneous point to her Alien homage origins and bring up Zero Suit Samus. That's a massive divergence already so I don't see how making her black would be some line too far that would make it incomprehensible.

That's not a reason to do it, I'm just saying the vast majority don't care or would just accept it after five minutes.

Just make a new IP why handicap it even more by connecting it to a dead failed franchise like Metroid it wont even have a chance. Nostalgia for Samus and Metroid would be more beneficial for the Metroid franchise revival.

This is the dumbest shit I've ever heard in my life, congrats

Fiction is 100 percent malleable. Nobody's grave is being spit on, nobody is being disrespected. It's a new fictional take on a pre existing fictional character. Big fucking whoop get over it and enjoy something new

Disrespectful to the original intent of a character that was shown in underwear for performing well in a game.

That's the hill you wanna die on, huh.

I mean the resident evil series goes entirely counter to your point outside of the last game in general the series sales have increased rather than decreased.

True, but I didn't want to post
Chris from RE7 since the game is recent and you only see him at the ending

Again, I'm talking about design. Please take the five milliseconds to read that word and realize why it's not the same as the word "identity."

Disrespectful to the design that they've tailored and worked over for 30 years. Me not wanting this has nothing to due how she's portrayed emotional within the games or what they actually do with her in the games.

Also, the fact you think I care if I'm banned or not is laughable.

Something being malleable, doesn't mean it should be malleable. Also, again, who are you to decide what people should or shouldn't care about?

Who are you to judge that this is silly or wrong?

Bro, the quote you just responded to is a comical exaggeration. but if someone had really said that, yeah, I would figure they're way too fucking invested. That's weird. That's silly. Maybe not 'wrong', but yeah.

"If they ever make this character who reincarnates, reincarnate into a girl, for a single entry in this series, I won't be able to reconcile that with my childhood memories! My precious nostalgia! It will ruin Zelda for me forever and I won't know how to feel about my childhood investment anymore!"

NOTHING SILLY ABOUT THAT HUH

Have fun on this hill, oh man.

This thread is going just as well as I expected it to...

Sure, my first choice would be to naturally make the black woman her own lead character, because there's still a depressing dearth of them (looking back, Urban Chaos on PS1 was damn progressive for its time and even by our current standards it still feels like an outlier!), but I wouldn't oppose making Samus black at all. I just cannot countenance how or why I would have any strong feelings against it. I'd love more black female representation in games and it's a new motherfucking Metroid. That's a huge win in my books.

Of course the manbabies on the alt-right would burst into flames and parade around the internet screaming like burning banshees about agendas, extreme left pandering and some shit. As easy as it would be for me to just dismissively say that the manbabies can just be left to cry and piss into their nappies, the "issue" would inevitably dominate online topics and social media along with usual attempts to harass and intimidate. I'll probably just write off the human species at that point because I'm tired of this shit.

Say a future Metroid game is marketed as a reboot, and at the end, Seamus Samus removes her helmet revealing she's a black woman. How would that make you feel?
Nah, I like Samus design. But if it did happen I can't say I would care, as long as she have a cool design.

What if she were a different character with Chico armor, and never outright named throughout the game?
I don't know what a "chico armor" is, but I'm down for another Metroid game with a different main character (a black on in this case).

You're killing me! :(

TBH this was my initial reaction to this thread as well, before seeing how "baity" the OP was with the dicitionary definition for Black.

The possibility of making Samus Black is higher than the possibility of Nintendo actually making another Metroid game at this point.

I guess I would be excited by the bold move but shes just her suit for the most part so I don't know if it's make much difference in game.

Same. Although I have an amazing mental image of a black Samus lifting her helmet off natural black hair and now I want it. Shit would be awesome

If it means we actually get a proper Metroid game then they can make Samus whatever colour they want.

Though I do dislike when characters get their race changed (or really any sort of dramatic redesign). Why not give us a cool new black bounty hunter that rivals Samus? Maybe less of the Chozo chosen one and more some kind of badass scavenger? Or elite federation assassin? They could even make it so you think you're playing as Samus and then reveal at the end you're someone new (just make like, the starting space ship and suit close to Samus' and have it change up drastically as the game goes on and then YOU FIGHT SAMUS!).

I would be upset because it would be an needless reboot, make a parallel character in the same universe if you want to but don't needlessly change Samus just because.

Huh, I wasn't aware that we all had the same exact kind of mind and the same exact kind of emotions. Far be from me to think of those who use fiction as a means of escape. How dare I try to be inclusive of all neurodivergent individuals, or anyone who simply prefers consistency, in my line of thinking.

Also again with the "hill" thing, yall should focus less on acting the exact same less this site will continue to have the same image it's had for years.

I don't care for race bending so I'd just drop the series entirely. If they wanted to make new protagonist to take over for Samus I'd be fine with that.

Who's arsed?

It's people like you that think this way and ask stupid questions like this that are the problem.

Everyone is too caught up on this race shit.

Just be happy and pray for a new metroid.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Okay the idea is stupid...but i wouldnt go THAT far to drop the whole series because of it.

I disagree. I think Ghostbusters is a poor example as well. 1. There was a time for that movie, unfortunately it was 20 years ago and should have been left alone.
2. They didn't deliver a product people wanted.
Stopped right here. You do know this is horseshit right? That the movie was targeted from the get and even the media didn't know how to handle it?

There's a group that doesn't like change and they already represent the status quo.

The purple is not her colour, you realise this, right?

I would not be bothered by it, because I play games for their gameplay. All the same I would be confused and wonder why Nintendo would change that.

Devil's advocate point:

Saying she is purple is just as arbitrary as wanting her to be black or asian or whatever else. I don't see why purple is not her color (like she was on the nes). Its not pinkish like white people. Why does she have to look like an earth human at all? I mean she lives in space. Race is a social construct as we all evolved from the same region. The idea that we don't continue to adapt to our surroundings in generations is absurd.

Race seems to be really important to some people. Perhaps when your parents are more than one race you tend to not give a shit about race as an identity. That's just my experience.

Personally, if we are talking about what needs to be done with Metroid, it is the need to make it a game again (We haven't seen her since the Wii). If its a good game, race won't matter to either group (the party that wants her to remain the same or the party that wants her to become something else).

For some reason i have the feeling the thread has something to do with this

Man, I really love all the designs for this Arms game. I don't think there is a single character I don't like on some level.

Ok, I'll humour you.

People are pushing for more and better new characters.
My avatar's character isn't black because he was drawn like this by the creator.

Now explain to me how these questions are relevant in a fictional scenario where Nintendo would make Samus Aran a black woman.

I'll wait.

So if people are pushing for new characters, why also push to change established ones?

Samus was designed as a blonde, white, athletic woman, and her representation since Super Metroid in the 90s.

The fictional scenario where Samus is black is the same as the one where Josuke is black: it doesn't exist, and it won't because their creators have no reason to.

That's going back to the problem with this thread: why would you want that, why do you believe it'll happen, and what did you expect from this thread?
Once again, it's like the "Link should be a girl" threads, but with even less reasons to back a sentiment.

This shouldn't ever be an issue. It's 2017. "Continuity" my asshole.

It isnt an issue...but it also shouldnt be a thing for no reason. There is nothing wrong with Samus a white woman...but it would be kickass if Nintendo could introduce new black characters down the line. "Killing" a established portrait of a charchters isnt necessary. Same for Link being a girl....when the series already has strong female characters that could be Heroes of their own games.

What does it being two thousand and seventeen years since the start of anno Domini on the Gregorian Calendar have to do with the race of a fictional bounty hunter?
The point is the same, you're puffing up her design as sacrosanct. It's not.
The point isn't really the same. Samus could be made to be a serial killer but still look the same as she always has, despite having a different "identity." Not that I'd be ok with that just that I want to make it clear that I'm not talking about personality or emotions, but design, and what's used to make toys or to make Smash Bros appearances. Also, I'm not trying to make her design seem sacrosanct, I just fail to see the point in damaging the design that a character has, and has had for thirty years for the sake of what I'd call "fake diversity" especially when the Metroid universe is already very capable of having more then one playable character.

I was surprised Samus was not revealed to be green, orange, or blue skinned after Metroid Fusion since she merged with a Metroid.

But then it wouldn't be Samus. If Samus would be taken out of the equation entirely, sure, but not Samus. Samus is white, so it would be incredibly dumb to just change skin-color for the heck of it.

There shouldn't have to be a reason for black Samus other than the creators chose to make her black. Same goes for any other established character in fiction.

"A reboot starring that one villain, why? ... Oh right, that was Dark Samus"

It'd be weird at first, but whatever
Don't know of any reboots where they'd go as far to change a character's ethnicity... Prince of Persia maybe? That DOS bloke looked pretty white before I guess
