Alien: Covenant |SPOILER THREAD| With more Christian subtext than BvS

If this thing only just barely clears $100 domestic I bet that "prequel" idea he's got bubbling gets shitcanned and we skip straight to this film's followup.

(It's looking to cross $40mil for the weekend but WOM also appears... divided at best)

So running theory on Fan forums is that Shaw died to something else, and David used her reproductive organs to creat the egg/facehugger subspecies. No evidence but leaks from early production. I wonder what all the cut content will detail.

I dunno

I want a buddy cop movie with Shaw and David

I was honestly hoping for this. Vivisected Shaw made me sad, and makes David iredeemable.

Didn't like this one, but I'm a sucker for the series and hope they can recover. At the very least, while some felt this way about Prometheus, this movie was a wake up call for me to not just take whatever for granted. It should be a sure thing as Ridley is great IMO but apparently it isn't.

Regardless I'll be approaching the next one with a hell of a lot more hesitancy.

So here is why I think its actual Walter on the ship and not David. The "David" at the last part of the movie has no wound under his chin, where she stabbed him with the nail. Anyone else catch that? All his other wounds are stitched up but there was no marks under his chin. There is a few scenes after their fight where there is close ups and there is nothing.

When the synthetic is asked to retrieve daniels from outside of the ship the camera has him in full view and his hood comes up from the wind which made him look more like david's first appearance. To me that was visual foreshadowing that confirmed that it was david and not walter.

I'm hoping they just follow up. I don't see the sense in going back unless they want to do something where it involves the present story and prequel concept running concurrently in the same film.

David has to go.

Dude is a genocidist

I also think how Shaw was handled was wrong. I thought she would be the protagonist for a few films and the way Prometheus ended suggested that. She had good chemistry with David and she should have thought about reconstructing him. It just didn't jive with me.

I liked David when he had characters like Shaw and Holloway acting off him. I liked Holloway being an ass and giving him some shit about being a droid and how Shaw had control over him at the end "it's because I'm human... and you're a fucking robot." I wanted Prometheus 2 to be more of that.

I like those exchanges, mainly because I saw it as both of them fueling his frustrations even more.
David is misunderstood. He's actually a really sweet guy.
I mean, he's all about free love. How can you hate a robot who wants to know... love? Just look at all his gentle kisses in the movie

Shaw and Holloway are the problem. If they had treated David with dignity, he wouldn't have turned both into live biological experiments.

Respect your robots, yo.

So I wonder what it is about David to entice such curiosity and free thought in him where he's an AI. I do like the idea of all this and I mostly liked what he was doing in Covenant it's just that I wanted Shaw to be there parallel to his madness.

I think Weyland made David in his image - the same relentless and ruthless mind, but unconstrained by human biology. Now with the initial scene in Covenant I think even more so. You can see on Weyland's face when he realized that making David wasn't going to solve his greatest problem - he was still human, and mortal. "Bring me the tea, David." , and for a brief moment there it seems David thought "I don't have to bring you a fucking thing, meatbag".

I liked it but wish they would step out of the Prometheus mind set on the next one. Just give me a full Alien movie.

He provided shelter, he tamed wild beasts, he gave gentle kisses, he taught someone how to create music, he buried his friend in a beautiful garden, raised babies, and without him, everyone would've died!

I'm glad David is finally getting the respect he deserves.

Not better than Alien 3 by a long shot. Better than Prometheus maybe. Act 1 was great. Act 2 was bleh. . Act 3 was good. Movie needs some serious trims here and there. Lots of silly effects scenes.

Yeah absolutely but damn that's some advanced AI. But I do think Weyland is the key to all this. Makes you wonder how deep his intentions actually went when he created David and how he made David to be able to think and calculate on the level of sabotage and doing experiments on the planet while wearing a hood and being Jesus.

Just found out Javier Botet did the Xeno motion capture. The guy is great at that stuff, but it would'be been perfect if he got in a suit and did it practically.

Saw it.

I like it. Good horror.

If I were to throw a score out there, I'd call it a solid B to 7/10 film.

A couple things I'd change:
- Don't show the neutron burst thingie hitting the ship.
- Cut the flashback scene with David releasing the virus on the city.
- Have Daniels go to cryo-sleep not knowing Walter is in fact David.

I really hope Scott gets to make his 3rd Promelien film - just not a prequel. I'd like to see closure to David's story.

Just got out of my showing. The fingering line and android kissing was fucking comical. So awful.

The movie was fine, overall. The audience was really into David, especially that ending. "Fucking savage" and "Got 'em!" were just a few things I heard them say, which made me laugh.

Danny McBride was surprisingly good, and James Franco didn't annoy me, thankfully.
WTF are you talking about, that scene was amazing. David, the ultimate narcissist, seducing himself. (And from another angle, it's a dialectic between Ridley Scott and Ridley Scott.) Awesome.

I agree with the first point, but I feel like the virus scene helped explain the xenomorph's origins and shed light on what was going on in Prometheus.

I agree on that last note. It wouldve made the final scene with the embroys more impactful.

I wanna see the behind the scenes stuff for that flute scene because that shit was impressive. Anytime I see one of those scenes, you can always tell it's actually the same person but they went above and beyond to be like, "you fuckers can't even tell right now".

I did like the bit where David was trying to mount Daniels and says "is this how it's done?" I liked that stuff. There were interesting bits surrounded by heaps of shit. I loved the flute scene because I thought David was about to shove the flute through Walter's skull so I felt some tension there.

He did that in another scene yeah but that very first scene made it feel like that was about to happen. Fass was incredible really.

I want a Furious Gods kind of bts documentary for this film for sure.

This would have heavily benefit from less characters. I get why the story needed more as it was a colonization mission (why were they trying to colonize somewhere in the first place, what happened to earth) but it ended up being too jammed with many nameless people that died mostly the same over the top and impactless way.

Prometheus has a share of characters but it at least had intro scenes for ones like Millburn and Fifield. The side pilots were about the only ones that just felt kinda there and they were badasses when they wrecked the ship. Covenant was mostly a bunch of people dying that I didn't know shit about.

Crudup at least was a pretty fucked up death as you got actual scenes and exchanges with him and he's the first to have a chest burst incident, but not much else left any impact. The girl that goes to clean herself and is greeted by the adult neomorph was fucked up too and had a bit of tension as well, I liked the gradual build up to her turning around.

By the way-- I've always defended Prometheus ;) MY TAG SON, MY TAG

I have issues with Prometheus but my god it's a masterpiece compared to this.

I've seen all the Alien movies, but I'm not deep into the mythos. But what I'm wondering about:

David essentially creates the facehugger xenomorphs, right? He breeds them after trial and error. Do the chest burst type xenomorphs exist before him?

Because that first Engineer in Alien died from a chest burst, right? So what does that mean?

These two movies just confused the hell out of me.

It's unclear because bad writing.

Yes, David created them, which means that Engineer had to have died after Covenant. So now there's the question of where that Engineer was and what it was doing with hundreds of David's eggs.

The chestbusters probably didn't exist before the backbursters.

And he also smiles when he is watching the Alien on the ship chasing Daniels and Tennessee.I thought the twist was too telegraphed - they never show the final swing from walter v david fight, the hood; the smile; and the fact that, deliberately as I was looking for it, his left hand was conveniently out of shot ever scene, so you couldnt tell if it was him or not.

Overall I liked the movie a lot. Some things I wish they had done better:

- don't have the proton blast. This doesn't make sense that it was a completely random event which made T go outside and capture the signal. The better setup would have been that they had received a message from Shaw that the planet was paradise and the engineers were great.
- show more of the engineers civilisation. I would have liked it if shaw made it to the planet and they treated her with honour and respect. Then David's resentment for shaw liking the engineers more than him makes him want to destroy them all.
- dont have walter's hand get taken off, for the reason of the reveal of david at the end would have been harder to pick
- I didnt like the "lets build a house on the lake" realisation from Daniels, when she is in the pod. I would have preferred if she went to sleep thinking it was Walter. They should have had the flute scene between David and Walte, but instead of Walter being able to play, he cant as he cant improvise music, only david can. Then at the end of the film, when Daniels goes to sleep, Fassbender stands up and picks up Tennessee's harmonica and starts playing it fluently. Then he regurgitates the eggs and walks off. That would be enough to imply it was David and left the reveal much later in the film.

Too tired to elaborate but I fucking loved it! The only complaint I have is that it was edited a little too much, especially toward the end. It just felt like everything was happening too fast and lost some of the tension that it could've had.

Also, did I miss it or was that shot of the Alien running down the red hallway towards the camera not in the movie? That was the coolest shot in the trailer.

Yes, maybe, no.

It's left somewhat ambiguous in the film, kind of like the replicant question from Blade Runner.

First impressions were confusing, i couldnt tell if i liked it or not, and at one point which you can see here on this thread i was convinced i hated it. But the more i think about it and read theories the more i want to see it again to pick up on stuff i missed. I think the film had some cool ideas, just not all of them well executed. Visual aesthetic and music was on point, that use of the prometheus theme was awesome

I loved the Prometheus music making an appearance but was still upset over the circumstances lol
