THUMPER is pretty much a perfect game

I'm not normally into rhythm games. Thumper, however, is something else entirely.

First, here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n640qUwCEDs

From the opening chords on the title screen, reminiscent of an orchestra warming up, and psychedelic colors straight out of the ending to 2001: A Space Odyssey, Thumper is a game that feels pure in concept, airtight in design, and exceedingly focused in execution.

There is a sense of mystery and menace, of AWE at the unknown, as your character — a cute lil' space beetle — hurtles across the universe... or maybe it's hell... on rails of glistening chrome, confronting abstract horrors and a demonic head that would give Sinistar the willies.

There are well-paced breathers — moments of quiet contemplation between harrowing obstacle courses and hairpin turns, where you can soak in the sights and sounds, cleansing your palate before the next gauntlet... but there are no frills here to distract you from the sheer physicality of the experience.

Seriously — footage doesn't do it justice. Slamming onto panels... Grinding along walls... Plowing through obstacles... Skating over spikes... And my favorite: Regurgitating an incoming attack, sending it shitting down the track — down a centipede's body, to the fang-filled maw from whence it came, like a colossal sucker punch to the Devil himself.

The game marketed itself as "rhythmic violence" — and once you try it, you'll know why.

The whiplash approach of obstacles, coupled with splashy effects, pitch-perfect sound and the bone-rattling crunch of HD Rumble (on Switch), makes me focus so intently that my thumb feels sore after each level. I don't have to press the A button that often, or that hard — but once you fall into this game's rhythm, it's easy to get swept up in it all.

This is the rare game where the buzzword "visceral" is perfectly apt.

It belongs in a museum as an example of how interactive art can focus the mind to a zen-like degree. The breakneck pace, the escalating scenarios, and the sense of "friction" from audiovisual cues and force feedback, timed perfectly to button taps and tilts of the stick, DEMANDS your attention, and makes you forget your worries, achieving some transcendental state, like Neo at the end of the first Matrix. It's amazing!

It's also a testament to how fun the game is that, despite dreading each boss encounter and repeatedly failing each phase, I dive right back in without hesitation (with mercifully short load times!), attempting the impossible for the umpteenth time... and steadily getting better, so that those early phases are destroyed in seconds, without a lick of damage.

And then you overcome the boss in a glorious explosion of color... The screen fades to black... The orchestra swells, dark and ominous... And you see your scores — a string of C's and B's, in my case, with the occasional S. But you know what? I don't even mind. Merely surviving is a blast. I'm someone who LOVES rollercoasters, and these levels seriously convey the same sense of speed and theatricality that you get with the best rides.

It's gorgeous on the Switch screen in handheld, or on the TV in 1080p 60fps, and it feels like a wonderful companion piece to Mario Kart and Zelda. The HD Rumble is fantastic. I also hear it's incredible in VR, and I plan to try it on my cousin's Vive. However you play it, this is definitely a game worth checking out.

Super-impressed. I can see why it received Game of the Year accolades last year. PLAY IT.

yeah the game is amazing. perfect showcase for hd rumble as well because it's pretty much satisfying sensory feedback: the video game and the hd rumble enhances the game feel so much. every well executed button press comes with an orgasm of feedback and when you get in a groove it just builds and builds and builds. the game is a face melter for sure.

Damn Neiteio, your hype threads are amazing lol. Wasn't considering getting this game but you've convinced me to check it out. How's the replayability? And is it really difficult? I like a challenge but not too big on games that are hard just for the sake of it.

I literally JUST finished the game!

I agree 110%. One of my new favorite games of all time, something about it just grabs you. It destroys, beats, demolishes, stresses you the fuck out.

...but the music, visuals, combo-hungry gameplay. So good. So glad this came to the Switch and I'm mad I didn't play this last year.

Man, all this praise I've been seeing really makes me want to check this out. It looks awesome, and I love rhythm games - but I've heard that it's extremely difficult. There are some genres where I welcome high difficulty, but rhythm isn't really one of them.

Unless I missed it, the OP doesn't actually say anything about how the game plays.

It looks like you're just riding along a single rail.
What do you actually "do" in the game?

While I liked the game a lot, without VR I can't imagine it being anything more than really good.

Especially on a small screen (even if the screen looks great). It's a game that you really feel, and VR helps that a lot.

It is a brilliant game. Loved it on PSVR and love it again on Switch. Glad more people are playing the game following the Switch release.

HD Rumble really shines with this game. PS4 and PSVR made the game an insanely awesome experience. Switch and HD Rumble lets you feel every impact in a meaningful way. Both are great ways to play.

Man I love rhythm games but I'm not getting better at thumper (switch). I play in portable mode because theres a very slight delay on my tv that throws me off.

This game is hard, right?

It's a great game. One of my favorite VR experiences as well.

My only knock is a lack of visual or audio variety; with that said, a consistent theme that builds in tension and intensity throughout the game is somewhat unique itself and was obviously the vision of the developer.

Thumper's VR is fantastic but absolutely not necessary. Please do not skip Thumper because you don't have a dumb VR headset.

Ah, I guess HD Rumble is a key thing here then.

I won't play it again on Switch, but I take y'alls word for it.

I'm normally not into rhythm either, but I really love Thumper. It has such a satisfying feel when you are hitting everything just right and I enjoy the music as well.

I bought it on PS4 when it launched and just got it for my new Switch last week. Having portable makes it even more fun imo. I will say, and I'm sure it's been said elsewhere, not having Majora's Mask be the boss in the Nintendo versions is a missed opportunity :p

The game has a beautiful difficulty curve. In fact, in its opening levels you might be lured into a false sense of security. But even when it hits difficulty spikes, such as the occasional boss, what appears borderline impossible at first quickly becomes doable through simple repetition and learning the groove. It's so much fun, too. It's a game where it's fun to fail, and it's easy to try again.

As for replayability, I love replaying the first few levels when I'm feeling more chill, trying to get combo multipliers for high scores. And even if I fail to do this, it's just a blast going through the levels again.

Played the demo in VR. I loved the game but I didn't like VR with it. I actually am one of the few people that don't like VR that much. I liked RE7 a lot though.

That said for me VR adds to the experience but what it adds was very distracting and tiring. Also I missed the rumble feel on the controller because I love that in REZ.

I'm buying on the Switch.

Its insanely good on Switch, especially with headphones on and the rumble.

A really really amazing experience and a must have for sure.

A tip: If you play this game on Switch, go into the in-game Options, then Audio, then pump the sound up all the way. It's a bit low by default.

It's 30% off on Steam at the moment - £11.19

I've wishlisted it but I'm not super into difficult rhythm games but because of the aesthetic I want to give it a shot. Probably with the next good sale, not in a rush.

Thumper is so fuckin' cool. I do not like rhythm games either but I purchased Switch version after watching the DF video.

Very happy with my purchase. I love the soundtrack and the way in which you interact with it. The aesthetic is amazing. Can't get enough. And damn is it challenging!

Damn I was considering getting this on Switch but this thread is all about VR.... So portability + HD rumble or VR immersion (+ 30% off sale)?

Haha Neiteio going in hard with new threads

Loving it tho, keep m coming

Thumper's first in line to buy after I finish my current crop of good stuff
