It's hard to believe that we're in 2017 and 60 frames isn't standard on consoles

Why don't they make it standard?
Because the majority of people don't give a fuck and neither do the majority of the video game developers, sadly.

30fps is framerate that MAJORITY of developers target, and that will not change.

Plus, general gaming audience accepts this frame rate just fine.

It's not hard to believe once you realize 60 fps is not some unattainable target but a choice developers make.

You know what's actually hard to believe, it's hard to believe that you need to be so privileged to play games that just having a poor internet connection can fuck you over so royally

it's actually not that hard to believe when you think about it.

also, since you're coming from PC, what difference does it make? multi plat games are almost always a PC purchase for you, if you're anything like me.

Did you not read the op? I have friends who game on consoles and therefore I switch to play with them.

The difference isn't that big for most people and those extra fps is exchanged for more spectacle that looks good on trailers

It's hard to believe that it's 2017 and we are still having this discussion because people don't realise developers have different priorities because of fixed hardware and it being 2017 has nothing to do with it.

I can't believe that someone who begins a discussion with "I'm a PC guy" is thinking only 60 FPS is an acceptable standard in 2017.

I don't care about 60FPS on consoles. I have a PC with a GTX1080ti for that.

If ND and Guerilla can make some of the most beautiful looking games on console, and the fps is smooth, I'm content.

Visual fidelity > frame rate for marketing purposes, so visuals will remain a preferred choice for companies looking to make the most money possible.

I've been wondering: does a difference in frame-rate really affect game-play? In an action game, does a 60fps rendered animation of a 0.2sec punch differ from a 30fps one?

I feel this 60fps requirement is just a myth.

It makes a difference in input and reaction. Don't kid yourself otherwise.

At some point people Are gonna have to accept, Many Consoles gamers don't even know what Framerate means Let alone care about it. Hell I didn't even know what it meant until I joined Gaf.

Honestly, Yes 60FPS can make a big difference. It's the reason why fighting games run at 60 frames. While some games will feel fine in 30FPS, playing that same game in 60 makes me not ever want to go back for that game.

For me if the dev can't make it run 60 consistently then at least make it run locked 30.

Very few people give a fuck, myself included. I play games to have fun, not to beancount and act like a giant asshole about inconsequential aspects I have no direct control over. People need to stop fetishizing this bullshit.

These are $200-300 machines with compromises made to get to that price range. I really don't know what you expect. They make games prettier than uglier/faster. Be glad as you get the pretty games and the faster framerate when playing on PC.

its not hard to believe at all. just look at the amount of 30fps defense force fighters on here. if 60fps (or performance, for that matter) are important to you, then a closed platform that doesnt allow you to cater to your own preferences probably isnt the best place for you.

Same here, although my ftw3 is heading back and my strix is arriving shortly. But in the main thread I pointed out I still play plenty of ps4 etc.. Since most my friends aren't Pc gamers

The devs have finite resources so they prioritise what they think is important.

I agree with their decision in most instances.

I like BF1 at 60 and I like Destiny at 30.

30 fps is more cinematic

60 fps is too tiring on the eyes

I've always said, whether it's your heart or your eyes, they were only designed to beat or look at a finite number of frames of motion in their lifetime before they go bad. Why waste unnecessary heart beats on exercise or eye frames by looking at fast motion. Save them, and they'll treat you better in old age!

Although I prefer 60 fps over enhanced graphics. At the end of the day I just don't care about all the technicalities as long as the game is playable. Just give me good games. I feel like people get too hung over the details and many won't play a certain game just because it doesn't meet some standard.

"Never said I wasn't a hypocrite."
I don't understand why everyone has such a weird boner for 60fps. Sure it's nice, but to refuse to play a game because of it framerate is silly.

It's only a real issue for me when an FPS/TPS's PvP is 30 FPS, pretty much a gamebreaker for me. Everything else I'm ok with for the most part.

Neither do many PC gamers, amazing as it sounds.

I have a friend who recently bought a PS4 but also has a good gaming PC, and he still can't tell 30 fps from 60.

30FPS to 60FPS is about as far from "inconsequential" as it gets.

"Beancount"...LOL.

It's more important for some genres to prioritize on one over the other and the power of these systems isn't unlimited. Frame rate seems more stable than it used to be last gen, though where sub 30fps was the norm with a lot of titles, or so it felt like

I think maybe games got bigger and more ambitious well before they probably should have and now the technical side is suffering for it.

It's not hard to believe at all. The visuals being gorgeous will always make for better advertising material than the visuals being smooth. Many customers are most impressed by surface graphic fidelity, and publishers who target those customers are going to design their game to best interest them.

Even amongst press, more informed players, and "hardcores" a game will more likely be hailed more intensely as a tech marvel if it looks good as opposed to running well. On this forum there are a ton of screenshot threads and rendering discussion. There are never really "look at this awesome frame rate!" threads and of the comparitively little discussion about framerates most of it only occurs when the fps is below the bare minimum of acceptability.

It's not hard to believe at all and will persist, no matter how powerful the hardware, until customer sensibilities at large undergo a major shift; Probably when every single game that releases is visually indistuingishable from reality.

I do think that we'll eventually see a move to more 60fps games not so much due to wanting a higher standard but to prevent dev times from bloating even more due to a long asset creation process.

FPS wouldn't change that.

Halving performance =/= halving content.

You'll be saying the same thing about 2027, OP.
This is exactly one of those threads that pops up every console generation and mid generation. The want for the 60fps standard is very understandable by those who have experienced and are used to it. It's just not probable or realistic imo.
Time after time again, the majority have proven to be fine with 30fps. It's easier to target and achieve 30fps.

It's not that hard to understand, really- devs have decided that other things are more important to use the console's finite resources (and their own programmers' time) on, and for most consumers of most games a game being 30fps (or even lower than that) isn't a deal breaker.

60fps will probably become more common as console generations move on and the other things devs have been sacrificing framerate for either hit diminishing returns (resolution, AA, etc) or become prohibitively expensive (ie more detailed models/textures.) Eventually we'll hit the point where only AAAA-tier games can even afford a level of visual quality that forces a 30fps target.

It'll never be the standard. Consumers want visual spectacles, console hardware can't handle 60fps in said visuals ergo they sacrifice that for graphic quality.
