Capcom thinking out Switch support, talks about Capcom's future and IP revivals

The conclusion from the English bit in the OP is incorrect.

The original:
カプコンとしては、どの機種に対してもゲームを提供できる体制を目指し、基礎研究を進めている。スイッチについても、5月に『ウルトラストリートファイターⅡ』を発売するので、状況を見ながら対応を考えていく。

This is literally translated to:
As Capcom, we aim to bring games to all platforms, and continue our research.
As for the Switch, in May we will release USF2 and we will plan our support while looking at the situation [of the platform].

So basically this is a quick plug for their next release in the pipeline, while giving the general "we look into it"-response any company gives. The word "sales" doesn't come up once.

Breathing a sigh of relief after this retranslation.

Nice. Thanks for this

Well I guess that means no Switch support from Capcom since no ones going to (or should) buy USF2 for the price there charging.

I laughed outloud at the title. What is Capcom going to learn from the sales? That people will or won't buy late ports? I'm sure for them this is something they're interested in to turn profit, but as a consumer, all I can think is, unless it's a part of some virtual console type system, they can save it. Though, if the next port is a "remaster", of say Powerstone, at the same price, I would definitely bite.

There is no way....let me repeat no way that USF2 is the only Switch game Capcom has in plans as of this point. I dont think Nintendo would publish the game in the West either if thats all the support they would expect from Capcom.

But if its like you say....lol.

Personally, i don't think it will be their ONLY game, but I also don't think we'll see much from them in general. My feeling is that there may be other games, but they're not close to announcing. They obviously don't want to bring over their main catalog (i.e. no MvC, no RE 7, Devil May Cry, etc.). I'm more interested in what they're going to do with games like Phoenix Wright. I hope that makes the transition, but at this point, I consider them like EA and we'll get half-hearted support for a while.

LoL..give me a break. 😂 It's either a mistranslation or Capcom is talking out of their ass.

I mean, even zero's initial translation didn't really imply the old title.

I can get why people would read it that way, but that's not what it says.

Re-reading the op it seems they are very interested in the Switch, but don't khow to support it.

Still a weird thing to say... For some reason I think Sony has moneyhated Monster Hunter, because otherwise it would be a no brainer.

So the development of their next monster hunter game on the Switch is based on the performance of an expensive outdated SF port.. Seems logical.

EDIT: looking at Garou's recent translation, that sounds much better. Carry on.

C'mon now. Even if the old title was actually true, there's no way USF2 alone would determine the fate of Monster Hunter on Nintendo consoles.

This is the scenario when a bunch of managers run a gaming company...All they care about is their bonuses.Game development is secondary.Maybe even obscure.Where is their oputput this generation? And now this report is ridiculous.I wish they dissappeared and output would go back to ps1-ps2 games.Capcom used to be amazing, and i know they could be better than ever if those clueless vultures would leave.

The new title and translation seems to have the SF2 comment as an entirely separate thing. If it's true the original point itself does seem more misleading than the old title.

Well, Garou brackets "for the system", so it's not clear that Capcom's CEO isn't referring to Street Fighter with Garou interpreting it as the Switch instead, versus Zero reading it as Street Fighter.

The implication is that it's ambiguous in the sentence.

Not having "enough people" for IP resurrections is an odd point, because I thought they outsourced most of their development.

Seems like most people just read the thread title. It spread pretty fast on twitter (there's a few accounts which spits out thread titles as tweets) and some small games journalism sites even picked it up.

Even if Capcom isn't saying it's a test, you look at their whole catalogue of games and what they have announced in amd around the launch of the Switch and you see their game is SF2 at $40 and you would be naive to believe this isn't a test.

They aren't interested in bringing their content on other systems to the Switch.

I'm gonna blast Capcom forever if they blame this Street Fighter port selling bad on why they won't support the Switch.

Right, the latter is what people were discussing before. I think the former would the fine for everyone is that's what was intended.

I'm fairly certain Ultra Street Fighter II is going to sell better than it should and better than Capcom is expecting. I'm just not sure what they will decide to do based on that. They could think "put lots of games on Switch because software sales are great" or they could think "Switch owners are willing to buy old games at a high price so keep doing that"

LOL USFII is a Capcom Test™

The last game for Nintendo that they specifically used this verbiage with.

Resident_evil_the_umbrella_chronicles_uscover.jpg

Which ended up selling decently and Capcom was sorta happy with. They ended up just making a sequel and pretty much calling it a day on the Wii.

Yes, it is a bit ambigous, but the sentence starts about the Switch in general and the bit about USF2 is inserted in a way that you could remove it and the sentence would still make sense in regard to the Switch.
I also don't think 状況 is a word that common for describing sales of a single title.

Not anymore. After titles like DmC underperformed they abandoned outsourcing new titles overseas and mostly in Japan, moved development in-house, and spent about a year restructuring. They've started a hiring spree and are hiring 100 new employees each year for ten years, with the intent to go from 1500 to 2500 employees.

SFV was developed 60% in-house. DR4 was Capcom Vancouver. RE7 was mostly in-house at Capcom Japan, as is MvC: Infinite. Ports and remasters will still be outsourced on occasion. The Megaman and Disney Afternoon Collections were Digital Eclipse, and DMC4 Special Edition was Access Games (in addition to a team from Capcom doing mostly design work with Itsuno directing).

Better than Capcom is expecting? When was the last time that happened. They always have lofty sales goal that they always miss.

People freaking out over SF2 being a sales gauge... honestly I think the game will do pretty well. Switch owners want new games so I think the sales will be decent.

Now I guess what it comes down to is Capcom's expectations. If this ends up selling 400k or so worldwide and they drop Switch support that would be funny.

SF2 currently sitting at #20 on US Amazon.

I think the worry is that if Capcom is gauging interest on the platform solely by USF2 sales (which the OP doesn't actually say) then that says something about the types of titles they might be bringing over, even if USF2 does sell well. Like, old expensive ports.

I'm gonna blast Capcom forever if they blame this Street Fighter port selling bad on why they won't support the Switch.

They're going to support the Switch if it continues on as a strong selling platform. It's silly for them to base the *kind* of support on how a $40 25 year old fighting game sells, if they're even remotely keeping up with reviews and social media buzz the biggest complaint is the pricing. So what info are they hoping to gleam from this little experimentation, other than only the most hardcore SFII fans will (probably begrudgingly) pick this up at their asking price?

Give us Disney Collection, which is strangely absent seeing as it's a collection of NES games. Give us a port of the recent RE 4/5/6 remasters, or HD remaster which originally was a GC remake, or the Chronicles games which were originally Wii titles. Or Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 remaster which is already available on Ps4/XBox one and steam. Or Okami HD. Or Zack and Wiki. Or Ducktales remastered. Any number of already existing titles that could have been quickly ported over to gauge interest.

I don't blame people for misreading that too much since Capcom's Switch support has been really strange. 3 month in and the only thing they have announced/have to offer is a 67% port of a game for $40 that's $2 regularly on PSN.
Weird when they were heavily rewarded for early 3DS support and even early Wii U support did well.
Hope e3 sheds some light, but I've been saying that Capcom likely misunderstood what Switch was (instead of a portable console they thought it was a Wii U successor due to have Wii U sales) so they likely didn't have much plans for the system.
I'd be shocked if MH5 lands on it first, for example.

Test game A:

Success.
Follow up game:

Test game B:

Success.
Follow-up game:

So, what will the lame USF2 follow-up be?

A 3DS Super Street Fighter 4 upport with Evil Ryu and Violent Ken. /s

But apart from that I would expect some form of Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and maybe an original IP like Zack & Wiki.
