Trump on trade: "The Germans are bad, very bad"

President Trump on Thursday attended a meeting with European Union leaders in Brussels, where he apparently decided to air his grievances over Germany's trade surplus with the U.S. "The Germans are evil, very evil," Trump reportedly complained in the meeting, attendees told German newspaper Der Spiegel. "Look at the millions of cars they sell in the U.S. We'll stop that."

Der Spiegel reported that EU Commission leader Jean-Claude Juncker disagreed with Trump, defending the merits of free trade for the global economy. New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman notes that depending on the translation, Trump may have been calling the Germans merely "very bad" and not "very evil."

European Council President Donald Tusk acknowledged earlier Thursday that there had been some notable differences of opinion between EU leadership and the U.S. government, including on matters of climate politics, trade, and most openly, Russian relations. "I am not 100 percent sure that we can say today ... that we have a common position, common opinion, about Russia," Tusk said.

Just getting Trump to actually attend the meeting with the EU was considered a success, however. Trump did not extend an invitation for EU leaders to visit the White
House

Trump Bio:
Trump's ancestors originated from the German village of Kallstadt, Palatinate on his father's side...

Yeah damn those evil Germans, Trump. Always twirling their moustaches and selling us Volkswagons.

It's as if Trump started reading World History, stopped right before World War I and was like "that should be good enough".

Its amazing how fast one man can burn every single bridge and undo decades of hard work.

Gonna be a while before the US regains trust of its closest allies.

Perhaps Germany sells more cars in the US than US manufacturers because they make better cars? Free-market capitalism at work.

Left out the best part:

According to a report from the "Süddeutsche Zeitung", the EU side was horrified at the extent of the Americans' lack of awareness of trade policy. Apparently, it was unclear to the guests that the EU countries concluded trade agreements only jointly. Trumps economic consultant Gary Cohn is said there are different tariffs between Germany and the US compared to the US and Belgium

This whole administration is full off idiots

The more troublesome thing was that Trump and his aides apparently still have no clue about the trade relations with the EU. They thought they had a different trade with Germany compared to Belgium... (also from that spiegel article).

Edit: Damn, I'm late :/

Trump thinks he can stop German car sales because he thinks we have individual trade deals with EU member nations.

But we don't.

Our own President doesn't know what our fucking trade deals are and how they operate.

We have elected a fucking moron and will pay the price in the years to come...

(on top of that, I believe most if not all German cars sold in the US are assembled here so he would also be destroying thousands of US jobs)

The problem is it's not like one man came in and did a hostile takeover of the US. Close to half the country feels the same as Trump.

After signing the holocaust museum guest book, he visited a fifth grade social studies class and decided to look into this Hitler fellow.

At least we've got him reading now. Keep going, Donald. The world has changed a lot since you were frozen.

Again, I want to apologize to the rest of the world, on behalf of the decent people in America, for this shameful and disturbingly immature and unqualified US President.

I don't know what's wrong with his brain or why anyone voted for him.

I'm sure it was bad as opposed to evil. However this isn't the first time that the admin has to be told about EU trade agreements

Der Spiegel and Sueddeutsche are some of the most credible outlets in Germany. A quick Wikipedia search could've helped there. What difference does it make whether you're linking to the translated German source or an English article based on the German source? theweek.com is far less credible than either Der Spiegel or Sueddeutsche.

How about we wait for credible news sources to pick this up?

Der Spiegel is more than just credible. It's one of the biggest European publishing houses and particularly known for its investigative journalism.

And they say he understood it the 11th time Merkel told him that...

It would really be a shame if all those Trump voters who work at the BMW plant in South Carolina and the Volkswagen plant in Tennessee lost their jobs as the result of a trade war, wouldn't it?

A crying shame indeed!
