Games that are announced way too early

Final fantasy 7 remake and shenmue 3 were the two standouts from the sony e3 2015 conference in terms of surprise . When these two games were announced people went insane with hype with hundreds of youtube videos being posted that showed people screaming their heads off or being reduced to tears . Recently we learned ff7r is just starting development so the game probably won't even be out until 2019 if we're lucky. As for shenmue 3 there was never even a release date set, so I think it's safe to say that we won't be seeing that anytime soon either.

Microsoft was recently guilty of this too with announcing scalebound and promptly cancelling it.

So my question is that do you like the fact games that aren't going to be out for another 6 years are revealed now ?

I really liked how fallout 4 did it with it's short marketing cycle and hope more games emulate that, but I know realistically that it isn't possible .

Revealing a game too early is obnoxious, because it overstays its welcome at events.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Eh, you just have to be realistic with your own expectations. Personally I like knowing games are in development, but I don't mind waiting.

Yeah I agree with you OP. They should have announced the kickstarter to fund Shenmue 3's development after they finished developing it.

It is what it is. They'll come out when they come out. There are plenty of great games releasing. Just continue to live life.

I don't necessarily want these games to take years and years to come out. The sooner, the better. However, if it takes a long time, why care? It is just video games. It is made out to be a much bigger deal than it needs to be.

More to do that if the game has nothing to show for in its intial reveal, no updates between long intervals of time and not having a clear path of when the product is to be release after a certain amount are all factors that make it tiresome for the wait and makes it seem like a project is a mess.

I do look forward to a good amount of stuff that were announced "early" like Kingdom Hearts, Cyberpunk and Death Stranding(most likely) but if they have any all the of the issues I listed then it's annoying as hell.

There's no such thing as "too early." Knowing what these companies are doing and planning is good for you, the consumer.

That aside, isn't it more interesting to know as early as possible?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Werent most of the out by 2015 ? Thats a max 2 year cycle between announcement and release so not that uncommon. It only appeared worse because WiiU had no 3rdParty support so that was all people were waiting for...this cant be compared to the 4-5 years you have to wait on other project like Shemue 3, FF7R etc.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

AKA: SMT X Fire Emblem. They didn't even know what the game was when it was announced.

Ended up being a pretty good game tho, so not bad. Although people were upset that it became something they were not expecting. Understandable to be honest

No games are announced too early.

All there are is games that mismanage their marketing opportunities to maximise success.

In a perfect world, I'd love to know what my favourite developers are working on immediately after their last game.

I don't mind announcements being made if it's a long standing IP, even just a quick trailer to say "this is happening" but I'd also prefer it if they just then say "we'll not be sharing any further information about this for a while, just wanted to let fans know it is coming formally" and then do a proper build up closer to release.

For new IPs, there's no need. You're not keeping fans in the loop, because you don't have any fans.

No we didn't, we learned that they're hiring 7 extra people to speed up development. Geez...

Yoshi's Wooly World - 2.5 years later (closer to three years later in NA)
Xenoblade Chronicles X - around 2.5 years later in Japan, very close to three years later in the west
Tokyo Mirage Sessions - Three and a half years later in the west (can't remember when it launched in Japan)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - over four years later (to be fair, this was barely announced during the Direct)
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS - around two years later

The Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 were all out within 18 months, so not too bad for those.

And yeah, most of these can't compare with some games by other publishers, but these are pretty bad timetables for Nintendo. I understand why they announced them early though, as Wii U was in serious trouble.

Aside from situations where the game just ends up getting canned or a developer seemingly denying or forgetting about its existence (like HL2 Episode 3), I don't really care how early a game is announced. Especially right now when there are so many other games to play. Let them take their time to get it right. Especially in the case of the two games mentioned in the OP. I mean, how many years had people waited to even hear the words "Shenmue 3"? So, a few extra years of them working on it isn't going to hurt.

Yeah, everything came out by 2015 (Xenoblade X, TMS and Yoshi).

I don't know how much of anew announcement that they're making a new Zelda is when it's totally expected.

Fucking Sony first party games!

Sony WW Studios, I love your games, but if your game is in early development, wait to reveal that shit!

Microsoft and Nintendo are definitely guilty of this as well, but I have a preference for Sony's studios, so finding out about games so damn early just kills my hype after a while.

It seems like Japanese publishers specifically love to do this. And often get delayed as well to boot.
I understand indie studios not being the best at time management and planning, but huge publishers like Square Enix have no excuse.

Nintendo seem to be the only ones who don't do this.

For Shenmue's case, having a Kickstarter, it makes sense to announce it early. Games like that you understand what you're getting.

While other titles should never be announced too early, they risk the chance of hype being lost and showing up often or not enough. The potential to lose them in the announcement of other titles, or those titles never showing up sucks.

I mean, I'm still a bit upset about Star Wars 1313.

I think the thing that works against Shenmue 3 is the Dec. 2017 'Delivery' date on the Kickstarter. It set an expectation of release that was never going to happen.

Shenmue 3 and FF7R were announced exactly when they should have been, during the year of dreams, right alongside Last Guardian and right after a killer Bethesda show.

They could not come out for the next 1000 years, and that would still be the best time to have announced them. It doesn't matter if they come out at all tbh.

every game ever

announce it

then like 2 weeks later fucking release it

we dont need to know 10 years in advance

smurfx

get some go again
marvel vs capcom infinite

game looked pretty bad graphics wise and they have shown almost nothing of the game since it was announced. a lot of the stuff they have shown are assets taken almost directly from umvc3. they better go all out at e3.

Cyberpunk 2077.

Honestly, more companies need to pull off what Bethesda did with Fallout 4 in releasing it only a few months after its official announcement. Just feels like a better momentum of hype knowing a game you just found out is happening and you want it is just around the corner.
