JRPG's where you LOVE the designs of your party EXCEPT for the main character.

Final Fantasy VII.

The party is pretty diverse and varied. Some cool iconic designs.

Then you have this shit piece.

That description fits most JRPGs in my opinion.

Especially all those that have your typical young boy main character, which as i said are sadly most of them.

Crono. He's not terrible, there's far far worse after all, but he's pretty bland compared to all the other Chrono Trigger party members.

The upcoming XC2 comes to mind.

I really wouldn't be surprised if his design is changed once its revealed again. The reaction to it was pretty negative. The clothing really shouldn't be a big deal since if it's like past Xenoblade games you'll be able to wear different gear, but there's no way around that face outside of putting on a helmet that covers it completely.

FFX wins this one hands down

Fucking Tidus....YOU LOOK LIKE AN ASS

LOL this is like if you got warped back in time wearing Air Jordans, some gold chains, a Bulls jersey, and some Beats headphones, and you were like "so what if I'm trying to blend in, and acting outside society's norms could get me ostracized or killed. . . FUCK IT IMMA SHOW THESE PEOPLE HOW WE DO IT IN 2017"

Shittiest protagonist design of all time.

I see nothing wrong with Princess Trunks.

It's got to be Van, is the game even about him at all!?

It's Vaan for me too.
He's the guy you run around town as, but Ashe is the main character and focus of the story. I've always seen Vaan as sort of the narrator that you are experiencing the story through.

I always hated Tidus' shorts/pants too though.

I'm surprised at the Final Fantasy XII answers, Balthier is the only decent looking design there

Also surprised at the lack of Berseria answers since people seem to hate Velvet's design
I love it

Can't really think of any answer for myself
Maybe Kevin in TitS 3rd? I don't hate it but it sticks out a bit

The reason Vaan exists is because Square-Enix upper management thought their teenage audience couldn't relate to some crusty old 22-year-olds like Ashe and Balthier. Because you know, every JRPG has to have the teenager with a "strong sense of justice" and his smokin hot yet totally platonic yet possibly something more friend from childhood.

FFXII.
I don't hate Vaan but just... Did you paint those abs on yourself, man? Have some decency.

And Xenoblade. Oh god, Xenoblade... What a boring design. And those eyes.

Also, and this might be controversial, but while I absolutely adore Celes in FFVI (and she's the protagonist of the second half of the game), I hate her costume, especially the 3D renditions of it. It just looks like bad spandex cosplay.

Yeah he is really boring compared to the other awesomely designed party members.

I am so damn grateful he was mute. Otherwise you just know he'd be spouting "power of friendship" "we have to do the right thing no matter what" JRPG verbal diarrhea the whole time.

Mary Skelter springs immediately to mind. Your party is a bunch of glorious Kei Nanameda girls:

etc.

And then the MC is this waste of space:

Seems like a harem trope, a bunch of interesting female characters and a deliberately dull male MC for Japanese nerds to identify as.

Tbh not big on MC or blue hair but charmed by the rest.

Can't really think of a game where I liked every other character but not MC. Usually are a couple I don't like when there is one.

I can't say all jrpg right?

But i want.
Because i still didn't play a single jrpg where i can even fairly like the main character.

Probably the only one i could accept, it was ramza.

Same!

JRPG's have a problem where the MC is the worst. Every final fantasy protagonist I don't like.

Mother series is the only exception I think.

FF12

Vaan is just so…………

If you add the fact that Vaan was only created to calm the executives who thought Balthier was, I dont know, too old, rugged, masculine, suave and awesome looking to be a JRPG protagonist then it makes shit worse.

Basically FF12 The Thread

Great OP, got a good laugh at the end there. Definitely a trunks ripoff too lol, unless trunks came second.

First post nails it, XII's supporting cast is absolutely amazing in every way, more than design even. At least Vaan was good for fighting, because otherwise he was pretty forgettable, and his design is terrible. Luckily, the supporting cast carry the game's story.

I got grudge sucked!

Is Penelo smoking hot tho? I've never heard anyone describe her as such. Vaan isn't really the typical teen typecast that you find in most JRPGs either, he isn't the goody two shoes "power of friendship overcomes all" or brooding and moody. He just has a real offputting design. If we're real honest, in terms of character development, Basche is a far more boring character.

I found pretty much all the supporting characters in Star Ocean 2 more interesting than protagonists Claude and Rena. Funny enough, they ended up making a sequel for the Game Boy Color that starred all the supporting cast as an ensemble.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I absolutely love the protagonist of DQXI. Purple is a great color and I even like the hairstyle.

My answer?

Lloyd Irving, Tales of Symphonia. Don't get me wrong, I like him, as a character, but his design is awful. Ponytail mullet, weird maroon vest with psuedo-buttons... ech. Everyone else in his game was pretty ace.

Oh yeah this is a good one.

The PSP version with the voiced dialog scenes really made me realize how painfully boring Claude and Rena are. They blabber on and on with all this pointless, banal dialog every time they walk into a town.

How are you all saying FFXII? Ashe has a wonderful design!

Calling Vaan the MC is like calling Lyn the MC of Fire Emblem 7

Estelle Bright disagrees with you.

Have a hard time thinking of something, probably Rush from The Last Remnant.

Didn't want their otaku fan base to feel like a bunch of fucking losers in comparison, I guess. Better throw in the generic teenager who gets to live out his childhood fantasy of being a sky pirate.

Oh man I lol'd at "this shit head is you" and I agree, his design looks terrible.

The one that comes to mind is the terrible boy protagonist from Pokémon Black (I think?) with that goofy haircut and all.
