Amazing piece of hardware. Never happier with an electronics purchase than that, has lasted me the entire 11 years of it's production cycle without a hint of dying.

Wonder how long the PSN servers for it have left.

I noticed earlier that nobody is maintaining the "What's New" section anymore. It's been advertising The Martian as though it's a new movie for over a year now.

My personal favorite console of all time. I wish they would've maintained PS2 backwards compatibility. Other than the need to keep a slim PS2 around once my original fat PS3 broke, the PS3 was great.

Wasn't sure of the significance of this story when it was announced. Does Sony Japan produce all their own systems domestically? What is to stop them importing Chinese manufactured systems. I would guess the lion's share of production is done in China anyway. Maybe some sort of import restrictions makes it cheaper to do it in Japan?

Rough as fuck start to its generation, but Sony did an amazing job with their focus on quality first party content to makeup for their disadvantages in price, multiplats, and online.

Has there ever been word about US production stopping? About 6 months ago my buddy was looking for a ps3 and couldn't find them anywhere, except for a local target which had 3 of them on clearance for 99 dollars. He bought all 3, one for himself and kept the other 2 sealed for resell.

My launch PS3 still works, but loud as hell. My second PS3 is fine and dandy. Played Yakuza 5 on it not long ago.

PS3, you are a good friend. Con te partirò. /commitssudoku

I still have loads of PS3 titles left to play.

I hope it doesn't die on me. Or that they kill the servers.

My PS3 Slim died and I need to buy a refurbished one. Still have a couple of games on PS3 on my backlog :(

Still, the turnaround of the PS3 it's quite a story.

Officially, no, but I suspect it was discontinued back in 2015. I picked one up for Yakuza 5 and it was not an easy find.

I believe worldwide production finished quietly a while ago.

If Japan production is done, you can bet it's done everywhere else. My parents bought me a brand new Super Slim in December 2015 and it was extremely difficult to find (UK). Most places don't stock the console new anymore.

Someone correct me if wrong.

Super rough start that ended up with the final few years becoming amazing and the UI becoming the speediest and cleanest looking one in the end. It's still my preferred console to watch blu rays on despite owning a PS4 and Xbox one.

It's kind of amazing the PS3 developed as it did. I feel like it went far beyond what Sony originally imagined. I tried playing some PS2 classics yesterday and booting the damn thing, navigating to the store (when I had to download an update, lol), downloading, installing, launching, etc...all crazy.

Anyway godspeed little PS3.

You can still buy tons of classic psx and ps2 games on the PS3 store (I'm sure the clock is already ticking on that). Im gonna try to enjoy as much as I can.
