I still don't understand why it was posted early or how it got to 1200 posts with no reviews but I'm not digging through to find out.

We had some reviews. Pretty sure South Africa's premiere movie reviewing website for hardcore gamers was in there. Maybe a blog or two. We discussed the merits of IGN movie reviews and Superman's underwear as well. Probably the most civil DCEU review thread in GAF history actually. Just light on the titular promise.

Pretty sure OP got the time wrong by accident.

The rest is entirely BGE's fault

Anyway, I would like to see Wonder Woman top movietickets.com's trending sales by tomorrow if we're indeed getting a $100+M opening.

I'm betting the T-Mobile 4$ ticket deal tomorrow will help, it got Warcraft to have a record-setting weekend

what happened there?

I don't track drama, and certainly not of the Bronson variety.

Anyone want to take a stab at the Thursday preview number for Wonder Woman? DCEU has skewed pretty high in that department to date.

I'll say $15M, for now. Though I should probably look into how big Game 1 is going to be; sports have been a big blindspot for me in the past when predicting box office.

Pirates is up to $92M in China after 4 days. Tomorrow is another Holiday I believe, so it should easily break $100M on day 5. Pirates might hit $175M in China, so beating the domestic total is still a good possibility.

Dangal is at $145M in China. I don't know what the original expectations were for the film, but I doubt they were even a third of that figure.

Wonder Woman presales are back to being so-so for a superhero film in China. They are currently behind Rogue One (which finished with $70M). They are well behind Doctor Strange, and slightly behind Logan. Logan had really good WOM in China though.

Well are there reviews yet?

Some from GAFfers. And between Ahasverus doing his normal thing with DCU stuff and us giving Bronson shit, it was fun.

But it was strangely civil. Maybe once the real reviews hit it will turn into a minefield and many GAFfers will die on that field.

I think I asked a couple threads ago but I can't remember if there were answers. You think pirates makes any profit whatsoever (theatre receipts alone)?

Theatre receipts vs budget only? or Theatre receipts vs all negative costs?

If the first, maybe? Just throwing some rough numbers out there

Code:
165M DOM * 55% = 91M
425M OS * 40% = 170M
170M CHINA * 25% = 42M
---------------------
Studio Cut ~ 300M

Disney reported a $230M budget, so if that is the case, their cut is bigger than the production budget. They also lied by about $130M last time, so who knows how much PotC5 actually cost.

The box office gross won't cover all of the negative costs, since marketing is going to be well over $100M, and people like Depp are getting gross participation. If the production budget isn't a lie, I suppose that they will turn a profit when factoring in the other revenue streams (home video, TV licensing, etc). If this was another insane money pit of a production, maybe not.

Basically, an Amazing Spider-Man 2 situation.

I believe it was Hollywood Reporter or Variety (or both?) that said Pirates 5 needed to hit $500m worldwide to make a profit.

It should be fine.

There's no mathematical way they make money on $500M WW unless they're also considering dvd, merch, etc

That low of a threshold? Yeah, it will be fine.

At least it didn't need to hit Suicide Squad numbers. That think is still in the red.

Zero chance that a $500M WW breakeven for Pirates 5 is anywhere near accurate.

Deadline had BvS making just over $100M net profit after estimated home video sales and TV licensing. BvS made $330M domestic and close to $875M worldwide, with a much smaller Chinese share than Pirates.

The (reported) production budgets were comparable.

Dunno, I'm gonna trust Variety's look at the budget, no offense. There are plenty of intricacies to film budgets.

Variety is going to post the budget that Disney tells them. It's not beyond Disney to lie about budgets in general, and PotC movie budgets specifically.

So we're going to ignore the verified information in favor of numbers pulled out of some gaffers ass?

Boxofficemojo (an authority on box office) has the production budget at $230M. Even is there was no marketing budget $500M split out US / Foreign / China wouldn't make P5 profitable.

Hollywood can't figure out how Rotten Tomatoes calculate their ratings, you trust them to understand film budgets and accounting?

Yeah, they understand budgeting and accounting really well.

It's how none of the most successful movies you've ever heard of have ever made any money to this day.

Looks like craft services was one of the parties to blame for those crazy PotC budgets!

Also, welcome back to the premature Wonder Woman review thread refugees. Ghaleon is watching you scoundrels.

Watch some of the behind the scenes stuff from 1 and see just how hard the original 3 were just to set up stuff like feeding those actors out on the ship sets.

Its really no wonder 4 and 5 moved to Florida and Hawaii.

With Studio driven films, you can roughly judge how profitable something is by how eager the studio is to make sequels.

I'll start off by saying that some of this is academic, since Pirates 5 could very well be over the $500M mark by the end of this coming weekend, and will probably finish somewhere in the $750M+ range. $500M+ is not at all in doubt.

With that in mind, let's just accept the $230M budget estimate at face value.

Furthermore, let's pretend China doesn't exist (since in most cases China largely just inflates WW totals, without adding much comparatively to a film's bottom line).

To get our unrealistic $500M WW, let's say that the domestic take was about what were are going to get at $160M, and the overseas take was the remaining $340M.

Off of a $230M budget, that would be worse than Tron Legacy (~$170M DOM, $400M WW on a $170M budget).
