So this is how Nintendo expects us to use headsets and voice chat on Switch

Remember people, this isn't actually what Nintendo is proposing, this is what Hori is proposing. Yeah it looks stupid as shit, but we have yet to actually see Nintendo side of the story. I'm still going to wait and see what the features of the app actually entail.

This is Nintendo's solution. We've known that (for some absurdly dumb reason) that there would not be native voice chat since January. People insisted "nah, that can't be the whole story, calm down and wait for all details" when others called it bullshit back then. Now we have Splatoon 2 branded equipment made for the express purpose of working around a shitty design choice. It's not wait and see time anymore, we're seeing it and it still sucks

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Making up facts to justify dismissing the situation??

Clearly Nintendo messed up when the defense strategy in this topic boils down to "this doesn't matter." I really don't understand this attitude.

Defense strategy for what ? I usually dont voicechat in games and just use Discord for texting/setting up games most of the times.

Just because it doesnt affect me, it doesnt mean its a good solution...chill.

All this just to get around implementing a native voice chat solution. Astounding there are people defending this accessory.

Stupid question, is there another way to have voice chat?

I mean the switch only has a headphone jack, correct?

I always wondered how the hell Nintendo would try to have voice chat on the switch...now we know

Quoting myself for the new page.

So for those wanting to tell Nintendo directly what a turd this is, I would recommend you to address these two guys and ask for a proper in-system solution:

https://twitter.com/SteveN0rman

https://twitter.com/trintran

They are both probably the ones that can get concerned by a massive backlash and let know the dissapointment to the big ones in Nintendo.

I really like this suggestion

Ill do my part

Great. Someone send them this thread too, and maybe post captures if they get any answer.

Nintendo has said time and time again that voice chat would work via an App. This would solve the issue of mixing game and chat audio.
That's what they said, but they never explained what the app does. They didn't really tell us what features it has, what options it allows for or anything. All they said was that it allows for Voice chat and Universal game lobbies, that's it. I'd still suggest waiting to see what Nintendo's intentions for this app are rather than base everything off how a 3rd party expects you to use it.

Voice chat is done through your phone on some app that will be released and so far from what it looks like that will be the only way.

Chill people, I am assuming that this is only if you want to get the audio from the game also coming through the headset. And yeah, this is only designed when playing in portable mode. I'm sure voice chat will be available only through the phone and headphones, this accessory is only to get the audio of the game into the headset. Jeez.

Nonetheless, I still think it's shitty you need a phone app to do voice chat...

Genuine question, and I know it's a fairly unusual circumstance these days, but: what is the workaround if people don't have a mobile device? Get one?

Also, does this take into consideration Apple and Samsung's recent trend away from 3.5mm jacks?
It's 2017, people who enjoy playing consoles should own a mobile device or two too...

Well if you don't have a headphone jack just buy the official bluuetooth adapter that Nintendo will publish for 35€ 😂

In the end it's bullshit for playing portable, but it's actually not that bad if you play at home on your tv

Edit: before someone says I'm a defender, it's bullshit for sure

They're still saying that in this thread:

there would be a preview i think?

Apparently 50% or more of nintendos fanbase is 12 years old or less, so we need to use this voice chat app so we don't associate pedophilia with nintendo in the event a child is groomed via chat.

dude, just stop please. it was like one poster who said that maybe thats the reason nintendo kinda shy aways from voice chat

I actually think it is a hell of a job by Hori putting together a marketable accessory that will probably sell gangbusters in Japan. The issue is not the accessory but the fact that it is needed in the first place.

Honestly struggling with why this is such a big deal.
YES the Switch should do voice chat and YES this is far from elegant but.....

- I'm playing Switch outside
- I have my phone as a hotspot in my pocket
- Voice Chat app is running and bluetooth headphone/mic is connected to phone
- Game audio comes out of Switch

- I'm playing Switch at home
- Again bluetooth headphone connected to phone for Voice Chat
- Game audio comes from TV

Now if I'm outside and don't want to have Switch audio outputting through the speakers, such as if I'm on public transport for example, then chances are I also wouldn't want to be voice chatting out loud anyway.

If I'm home and I need to be quiet so don't want Switch audio coming through my TV, then again chances are I couldn't be voice chatting out loud anyway.

So... I'm at a loss... OR A DIE-HARD NINTENDO DEFENDER FANBOY I guess...

What am I missing?
Reference for all those saying nobody is defending this garbage

According to many it's not a handheld tho.

still doesnt make sense, because the console has been a success despite those flaws you say it has, so in grand scheme of things, those "flaws" arent as bad as you think they are

I don't deny it's success, not so I think any of it will have a significant impact on it doing well in the future, but there is no reason to act like it's a flawless piece of hardware. It has some issues that are likely going to become reoccurring talking points after the initial launch phase hype has worn off, as we are seeing with this thread.

A free version of the app is expected to launch alongside Splatoon 2 this July. So we have from then till fall to voice any criticisms, and hopefully Nintendo will take them to heart and updates some improvements as time goes on. Voice chatting on a phone doesn't have to be a bad thing, but I agree this isn't inspiring much confidence.

Love my Switch but this is a terrible move by Nintendo. Just patch in Bluetooth to the OS and have a party chat app patched into OS like PS4 and xb1 do it....

Really, how hard can that be?

Looking at it makes me very confident that is the case.

If I needed to voice chat on the go, I'll do no game audio or game audio through the switch speakers. Not ideal in every situation, but not the worst thing I've ever seen.

Cannot believe a Hori accessory is causing such a fuss.

Why not wait til Nintendo unveil their setup.

This is their setup

Reggie and Official Nintendo site confirmed the Use of Global App in this fashion at the reveal

Whats horrible is that they didnt take any of the negative feedback to heart

Like that even matters. I wasn't defending them and still got piled on.

It's a shit solution but Nintendo is doing what they want to do for their own reasons. Either accept it or move on. Now the thread is +40 pages.

But lololol Nintendo fanboys doing free PR amirite

Junior, please.
What we are seeing here is a hasty cobbling-together. I don't think voice chat was ever part of the plan.

Definitely the most Nintendo thing I've ever seen, what a laugh.

I was always in a wait and see mode with Nintendo's online. I'm glad I did wait today. This is so alienating. I was never too keen on the idea of paying to play online Nintendo games and now I've seen this the only way I'm going to buy a Switch this year is if Mario Odyssey is a 10/10 game. This has killed my interest in Splatoon 2, ARMS and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The console has native Bluetooth, implement a headphone jack into the pro controller for those without wireless headset

And allow for Bluetooth compatibility. This is just as bad if not worse than Wii u and will not support paying for online with features that are so archaic

Didn't Nvidia develop the is?
Bluetooth would be a good solution if you have a headset that connects to and plays multiple sources at a time. The heaphone jack wouldn't make much difference when the problem stems from the necessity of the app to the experience.

Tis is your main demographic right now Nintendo. Its not just all vulnerable little kids who need to be protected from the evils of voice chat.

I hope Nintendo gets roasted over this because its fucking unacceptable. What an embarassment, imagine having to explain to someone how this works with a straight face.
