I paid good money for this Dynex!
Wonder Boy: The Dragon Trap launched on PC today. Even though I kinda want it on Switch, too, I think I'll grab the PC version first and give the game a shot. I dunno if it'll necessarily look better on PC (are the assets actually 2D, or is it 3D with some crazy good shaders?), but it should be pretty cool.

i'll try one more time here:

anybody have any recommendations to grab japanese famicom carts other than ebay?

thanks =)

I use these guys occasionally. You can convert to USD with the dropdown box in the top left corner. I was able to snag Joy Mecha Fight and a few others from them on the cheap.

Edit: it looks like everything on that website has increased by like 10 dollars since last time I visited a few years back.

Also check out Book Off in midtown. They sometimes get some Famicom carts on the cheap.

Guys, a new Bubsy game is announced, I mean seriously, I thought the franchise was dead. I hope it's actually better than the previous games, like Bubsy 3D which is awful!

I thought Bubsy would stick to the 90s, guess I was wrong.

Next up: "Aero the Acrobat: Back to the Circus", a 2D retro inspired throwback to everyone's favourite forgotten mascot, complete with faux retro graphics and a chiptune soundtrack! Available on PC, Xbox One and PS4, but not Switch because it'll make GAF salty.

Some Star Ocean talk a couple pages back, is Till the End of Time on ps2 any good? I have it and was thinking about trying it out. I played 10 min or so a couple nights ago but obviously not even close enough to have an opinion on it. Although Fayt seems Tidus-ish, lol.

Star Ocean 3 is the worst RPG I've ever finished. Which indicates two things:

1) I did finish it. It was a long game, and it took me a long time to sit through it all, but I was pretty bored and did eventually finish it.

2) It fucking sucked.

The story is horse shit, unsurprisingly, and it has a twist so shockingly stupid that I stopped playing the game for like 2 months. It does have more of the futuristic trappings, but not enough to save it from generic fantasy nonsense. So, I guess that's almost cool. The voice acting is decent enough for some characters, and absolute clown shit for others.

The gameplay is the real issue, though. The battle system is fucking annoying. Basically, your party is completely fucking useless when you let the AI control them, but it's a real-time battle system, so you kinda have to let them do their thing. They let you set the AI's parameters so that they focus on defense or conserve MP, but they usually don't listen. The best part, though? You die when your MP hits 0. So, your stupid fucking allies will either use no magic at all, or waste MP like there's no tomorrow, and then an enemy will use an MP-stealing attack and take like 2 MP from them, and your ally will die. This happens ALL. THE. GODDAMN. FUCKING. TIME. If you choose the alternative, and have them just never use magic, it takes forever to kill enemies. Or you can't kill them, because they're only weak to magic. Great!

Also, Huxley is a fucking piece of shit.

Fuck Star Ocean 3. I fucking hate it.

I'm getting subtle hints you're not a fan. Lol, thanks for the input. I had read about the MP thing but didn't know it would be so ridiculous in execution.

I'd rather see a million shitty mascot platformer revivals than one more goddamn indie roguelike.

fortunately indie rougelikes seem to be fusing with metroidvanias to form the ultimate indie game.

the roguemetroidlikevania...

..

....

with an rpg system.

edit: Chacranajxy is my favorite gaf poster hands down. His neogeo OT is legendary.

think solaris japan carries famicom games.

I've bought quite a few games on the famicom world forums as well.

thanks all

Yeah, let me put it into perspective: I broke 2 controllers playing Star Ocean 3. It's fucking frustrating.

I had the great idea to upgrade the HDD in my launch bc 60gb ps3 tonight. With the new hdd installed the ps3 boots to the error message, "Cannot start. The appropriate system storage was not found." It's this hdd, which I did some research and I think it should be fine. Poor research? Bad hdd? I tried to adjust the drive in the enclosure as much as the mounting holes allow but no dice. I put the old 60gb drive back in and it booted without issue.

Did you go through the backup and restore process? If you just through a drive in there it's probably not formatted properly.

Edit: Holy shit, is PS3 retro now?

lol, it's retro enough (I guess?).

I did the backup but I didn't do anything to the new hdd drive before installing.

I thought it was just (abbreviated): Install new hdd, on screen notification of need to format new hdd, click yes, then restore via the system menu

edit

\/ bah, I shouldn't have cross posted, lesson learned. I'm going to move it to the ps360 thread.

I responded in the other thread as well but you also need to fully reinstall the OS from USB storage.

Tbh, while I'm sure it'll have a massive collectors market in 12 years or so, I don't think I'll ever really consider PS360 retro as long as modern games still play under the paradigms set in that generation. I'm not even sure what big games this generation don't count as derivative of steps made during that era. Maybe Zelda bucks it a bit but is totally a follower in other aspects.

My first "retro score" in quite a while. Everything is complete except phantasy star II, it's just the case. I got everything for $60cad which makes me pretty happy. Diablo looks brand new.

Boy Phantasy Star sure has inconsistent and shitty box art in the west.

I got my IDE to Compact Flash adapter so I could load an OS onto my PC98 and use it finally today. Unfortunately, it's connector is female. I guess I have to wait until I get a new cable :(

Congrats on Phantasy Star. Get the first one too if you get a chance. I agree on the box art thing. Some western adaptations of Japanese art should be jailable.

Nice pickups on the Phantasy Star games for that price.

It's a series that's been on my bucket list for years! One of these days(years) I'll get started on it

I honestly can't think of a single western boxart that was better then the Japanese art.

I think I saw that ad on Kijiji if you're in the GTA.

Alright, so... I'm getting a new arcade stick to use with my Neo Geo stuff once it arrives. Which of these is the better choice?:

1) Build a stick that's got a 4-button layout. Just for Neo Geo! It could also work with games with 4 or fewer buttons, of course.

2) Build a stick that's got 6-8 buttons. It'll work with everything, including 6-button fighters, but when you have all those extra buttons in the way, it's not quite as ideal for Neo Geo stuff.

I've already got a VLX Kuro stick, which I guess I could use for the 6-button stuff for the time being. Something about having a single row of buttons for your hand to rest on just seems nice, though.
