WWDC 2017 |OT| iOS 11, macOS 10.13, watchOS 4 & tvOS 11

hey friendos, possibly a dumb question:

how bad of an idea would it be for me, a non developer who really likes new stuff, to install these developer betas on my iPad Pro 9.7 and Apple Watch S2?

Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet, but you can now play videos in-line in safari on iPhone. Previously, 99% of videos would play only in full-screen. Once the video starts playing in full screen, there is now a little full screen button you can tap to pop it back into the page so you can scroll while listening or whatever.

Could have sworn this was a thing since iOS10, or at least a point update

iPad Pro carries less risk since you can just make a backup to iTunes and roll back if need be. watchOS4 requires iOS11 on your phone so you’d have to hit both those, but if something goes wrong the only way to get it back to official software is to physically mail it in to Apple and have them do it. So the watch I wouldn’t do unless you’re 100% okay with doing that

Aiii

So not worth it
The fact that this now pops up whenever you play sounds (in this case Spotify and Audible):

...Makes WatchOS 4 just the best thing ever.

Should have been there from the start.

I need to get in on the WatchOS beta.

That just comes up on its own when you’re playing something?

Oh damn. Though I wish there were a full Now Playing watch face, this is still fantastic.

My AirPods are gonna get way better to use with audio controls all over the place.

Wow, Kaby Lake may have been a bit of a nothing on desktop/high TDP systems, but it does allow decently more power to be packed in at low TDPs. The base 2017 model is now faster than the maxed out 2016 model, and like for like models are 30% faster at multicore.

GPU isn't changed much though. And the 128GB model has half the write speed.

The Talk Show with Craig Federighi and Phil Schiller was good, if you still want blanks filled in there's a few in there

https://daringfireball.net/thetalkshow/2017/06/08/ep-193

Federighi's explanation of why they don't sync all People tags, just the ones that have been explicitly confirmed, makes no sense. Why does each device need to recalculate it separately if they all use the same algorithm and will come to the same result?

Also, what exactly was the holdup with privacy? I don't get the issue and I don't get how they 'solved' it.

I'm gonna have my iPhone and new 10.5" iPad on the beta cycle soon. Want to also get my Mac onto High Sierra but it feels exceedingly dumb to have ALL my devices (sans Watch) on a beta, especially a first beta

I'm in this situation and I'm regretting it. I'll ride it out from here.

Unless you have an eGPU kit or something I can't imagine why you'd bother to put a main machine on High Sierra yet. Nothing else in it is worth it.

Not convinced iOS 11 iPhone features are worth it either. iPads are the only thing I'd chance it with if you aren't a developer.

watchOS/AirPod additions are subtle but very big quality of life improvements, though - I'm considering making the jump for those.

But yeah outside of iPad it feels like this is an API and underpinnings year more than a feature year. I'm fine with that, though macOS still needs iTunes taken apart.

What are the chances of beta 2 release later today? This beta has literally made me dread using my phone, with how horrifically slow it is on it.

I did this a year ago and boy did I regret it. So buggy and unstable, Apple betas are probably harder to get rid of than STDs (no first hand experience tho)

TBH on everything but the Watch it’s pretty easy. iPhone and iPads are dead easy, Macs have more steps but are still doable. The watch has to be mailed to Apple to roll back to a stable release

Is there really no way to get rid of notifications on the lock screen without having to open them on iOS 11? That seems pretty bad...

Yeah the side swipe isn't working. Seems a glitch but it's killing me

Also there may be some indication that sorting notifications by apps is coming back? It's a long shot but there was a scenario where I had one News notification in the older section, and a bunch in the newer section and a bunch of other notifications in the newer section as well. I hit the x (but did not clear all) for the one older News notification and all of hem disappeared, but notifications from every other app stayed put. I've been able to do this twice.

Lucky for you you’ll be able to do an extensive test run of it at work to see how you like it

True, I imagine I'll end up getting one. Ever so slightly annoyed I gotta shell out more coin on top to get one of those mag-safe USB-C chargers and a USB-C hub with a decent mem card option since I do photography for fun. But it'll hopefully be a one time purchase that I won't have to worry about doing again for quite a while so we'll see.

Certainly I wouldn't test High Sierra on a machine you're attached too. Beta file system conversions is a scary concept.

Shame though, as I'd quite like to test if Photos is less of a POS yet at basic HIG stuff like "don't freeze with no progress bar while importing and exporting."

Apple's silicon team deserves all the praise they get and then some
Maybe they really should just deck out MacBooks with inhouse chips.

My iPad Air 2 battery only lasts about a day on the beta. Gonna have to ride it out.

Anyone have some recommendations on cases for the 10.5

I grabbed the Logitech slim keyboard case. Will give my impressions on Tuesday when I get the iPad itself

Apple makes high quality leather stuff as well, got one of those too in case I don't like what Logitech brings

It's getting close to that point. I suspect Intel's 10nm process and finally bringing quad-cores to lower power mobile processors in the next year or so will temporarily extend the lead in that segment, however.

What's more interesting to me is, outside of price cuts, in many ways, we've seemed to hit end-game status with the 10+ core iMac Pro for all but the most demanding workflows.

And in many remaining enterprise use-cases, it makes way more sense to use a server/cloud-based solution.
