Skimming through this thread since last night. Sounds like he issued an apology, the publisher issued an apology saying he's changed since 2014, and then people found out he kept liking toxic tweets as recently as a few weeks ago? Is that the update?

Yeah, also there's no indication that the game's story will change. It's still gonna contain his vision of a dystopia caused by women and progressives.

Weak apologies were made, but the game is still shit with nice pixels. I, and many others, will avoid it.

People tend to not want regressive media to be successful since it could further and normalize regressive views.

Sure, absolutely. But isn't a bit soon to make a final opinion on the game's narrative. I do question the timeline of events here, not the content of the story.

Well, like my reply just above, you and I cannot be entirely sure if the story will change or not. Like the guy who posted earlier, let's practice actual cautiousness, no ?

The discovery of his views only happened after the game was already in development for a long time.

I highly doubt the final product will differ much from his original vision. Especially since the dev is still spouting crap on twitter and his apologies are terribly weak.

So yeah, I'm not holding my breath.

The content is not even relevant.

I'm not buying it because he holds toxic views to this day, plain and simple.

We ultimately don't know the exact narrative of the game, yes; however, given that the creator said it was about how feminism and equality turned the world into a dystopia a couple of years ago and he was liking bad tweets recently doesn't give people much hope. many have seen similar situations and aren't ready to give the benefit of a doubt to someone like him.

If some dingus wrote a bad sci fi novel about how feminism and universal basic income led to a horrible dystopia would anybody even give a shit besides like 5 Rabid Puppies morons?

Unfortunately, there are some really terrible libertarian and objectivist sci-fi novels, even some that pretend to be "cyber-punk", but from a far-right perspective.

This dev really isn't that unique. Crappy writers have been misunderstanding cuber-punk for many decades now.

to sum up

The guy doing the art and direction isn't doing the writing, there's a team of a handful making this game. They obviously need more PR people though.

But, perhaps more importantly, this was the best teaser in the Microsoft presentation.

You can doubt the story couldn't change, but trust me, stories can radically change during the course of any game's development

Fair enough, that's your right eh !

Any empirical data on when gaming culture took a turn for hate? I'm pretty sure Notch doesn't get away with hateful comments like those 5-10 years ago. Xbox Live era? League of Legends? Gamergate? When Twitter got big?

What is going on here? :-o

Great-looking game Microsoft sponsored during their presser turns out to be masturbatory alt-right fantasy based on anti-feminism and the developer turns out to be a gamergater. Apologizes, saying his views have changed over the years, despite still tweeting/liking gamergate related stuff.

I do not hold a particular view of feminism outside that I'm not actively against it nor annoyed by it. I don't consider myself a feminist since I'm not really engaged in anything but just from an artistic point of view, I could be interested of seeing any vision regarding the feminist way of thinking if indeed it was the core idea behind the project.

My question being, what's the point of being so clenched in a particular point of view when someone offer the possibility to maybe see it in a different angle. Not necessarily a vicious, skewed angle (since we don't know yet how it will turn out) but just a different one ?

"just asking questions"

When a developer is actively supportive of a campaign of harassment towards women, that same developer making an anti-feminist game is directly linked to the harassment he perpetuates.

The guy has pretty plainly stated the premise /inspiration for the game, there isn't much to debate. This isn't just "I don't like the Artist's views", the art is the problem. This also isn't about tweets from 3 years ago, he was still tweeting a bunch of shit yesterday

This stuff needs its own thread so people don't have to keep repeating themselves

Well, feminism is all about equality of the genders. It addresses things like rape culture, sexism, etc. For some, me included, stuff like that isn't really up for debate. It's not just a point of view when someone's existence depends on it. If this game is truly about how feminism destroyed the world, that isn't a stance worth entertaining. Especially if it's from someone who was/is part of a campaign of hate and misogyny.

I'm just talking, yep ?

I did miss out on the anti-feminist bit (was it the tweet talking about how the game was about how feminism won ? Not automatically anti-feminist I guess ?). And it seems that I do not have all the info, did he literally harassed someone ?

Alt righters and assholes in general think freedom of speech means we need to tolerate, accept and support anything someone says or do just because, you guys are so wrong.

Say whatever you want but live with the consequences of it.

Some stuff like racism, treating women as equal humans beings, etc. is pretty cut and dried. Tough to see what the "different angle" could be.

I was temp banned on r/games for posting this:

To the people who say the statements from the Last Night dev has no bearing on the game. The dev tweeted:

My game takes place in a future where "progressivism" has spiraled out of control

https://www.twitter.com/ponettplus/status/874057669744750594

Our game will take place in a cyberpunk world where modern feminism won, instead of egalitarianism. #gamergate #notyourshield

http://www.craveonline.com/assets/uploads/2017/06/The-Last-Night-Tim-Soret-Controversy.jpg

He's deleted the original tweets.

Just posting this and not saying that he's apparently changed his views was considered a witch hunt.

Yeah, because THAT is the most important thing here. Clearly this game being a standout during Microsoft's conference is what we should be talking about, not the years of shitbaggery its creator represents.

most of the people defending this guy and saying that they take his word about his change in perspective are not arguing in good faith and would be totally fine with a game that shits all over any and all progressive politics

i don't even care, just be honest and own it

It's 5.30 am and I'm wondering how some of you can defending this shit.

Yes, a matriarchal dystopia setting for a game is pretty interesting, but when the writer has been spewing and liking gamergate related stuff I think it's clear we should just be extremely wary about the game.

I know that some of you think this is a witch hunt, that we should also try to disassociate the game and the author but well...

The last time I've seen this type of defense when there's clear warning signals everywhere Trump was elected as president.

Still think it was the most visually-striking game of E3 so far. Probably buying it Day 1.

also a "witch hunt" by definition is a paranoid search for something that doesn't exist.

this isn't a witch hunt, the guy did the equivalent of posting on message boards for witches and putting #iamawitch in his twitter bio. this is arguing about whether being a witch matters.

It's about how feminism winning causes a dystopia, so yes, automatically anti-feminist.

And gamergate = harassment. Anyone saying otherwise has the facts wrong or is gaslighting you.

This gif pretty much encapsulates how I feel about The Last Night after seeing the reveal yesterday, and then becoming aware of the character of its creator:

I guess I've found where our vision differ. I think that reviewing art and what they condone/support is important. It does not mean that I agree with said art when they present things I don't support. And trust me, I can see where you're coming from, since I'm regularly victim of racism. But I find it important to review and deconstruct art form whatever their message might be.

i just can't imagine anything interesting or thought-provoking coming from someone with a perspective like this. do you think a game dealing with race relations being made by a white supremacist would have anything meaningful to say, or would it more likely end up just being a bunch of bigoted garbage?

He supported a movement that harassed people to the point where FBI was involved in certain matters.

Yes, he could have changed but really, people here have proof from his social media that he still has that mindset.

No. When his views are as pervasive as they seem to be, and so plainly stated over the course of this game's development so far... no. It's not too soon to make a final opinion, because people write what they know and want, and all evidence points to him doing the same. And a lot of people rightfully want nothing to do with that, much less supporting someone who holds such regressive views.
