Monster Hunter: World (PS4/XB1 early 2018, PC later, directed by MH4 lead planner)

This was a very bad trailer. They don't show the player hit the monster once other than the mounting. The way it keeps cutting around to avoid showing any real gameplay feels telling. Some of the stuff felt like it could be very scripted which is really against the spirit of monster hunter.

It's telling that it's still in development.

I am reading Famitsu's comments and there's more positive comments than I expected.

Some port begging (for Switch, but I suppose we'll hear about MH5 for Switch soon), some complaining they shouldn't have bought a Switch then, some others saying it's time to buy a PS4.

A LOT of people don't get if the game is online only though, thinking it's like Frontier.

Good to see that Japan is positive on it, thanks.

now that this is real, i wonder if the eventual switch one will use 3ds graphics since they are porting over XX to the switch?

i really hope not, they could finally give it a fresh coat of paint for the switch too, especially if they already have assets for this game.

"First time" global launch for the series means at the very least MHXX Switch won't be hitting the West until after Japan.
MHXX has already been released on the 3DS, so that statement doesn't necessarily preclude the Switch version from launching simultaneously in multiple regions depending on how you read it.

But if Capcom does decide to hold off on XX or skip it, that'll save me more time for EO V in the autumn.

What do you mean by faster more generic combat? On what basis do you make this claim?

The hunter didn't even get a chance to even swing the Great Sword. The gun shoots faster, but nothing indicated that the actual movement and dodging has even been changed.
Quite the opposite! I saw traditional Monster Hunter combat in the few moments we did get.

https://youtu.be/SXB2IHLm4m0?t=148

That right there is a slow-ass greatsword jumping attack. The combat's core will remain intact nearly for sure.

This game looks like what happens when Monster Hunter is no longer severely constrained by the memory and processing limitations of withered hardware. I think a lot of the negativity sprouts directly from the leakers framing of the game as "watered down for Western tastes".

I think you're possibly right.

...well... that and possibly even Switch fans who are annoyed at Capcom for giving them a 3DS port.

i understand that some of you may be disappointed that this doesn't feel like monster hunter, i'm with you on that, but come on, we wanted a Monster hunter on consoles that looked amazing for years, and we finally got it, this is better than nothing

This Monster Hunter doesn't look like it'll win over the "new" mainstream fans they want. Really seems the only appeal are MH fans who will play anything and those who will put their money where their mouth is after wanting it on the system. They aren't going to see big traction from this from the casual side of things.

Will not be surprised to see it under sell the what was it 3.5 million expectation they had for it?

2 million for just Q1 2018

If Fujioka is really directing MHW and Capcom is still making MH5 separately then MH5 must be handled by different team..

Fujioka is the executive director. He's the series director for MH so that makes sense. Yuya Tokuda is the director for MHW and he was the lead designer on MH4 and co-directed MH4U iirc.

Having watched the trailer a couple of times, I now think this is a real evolution of the series. I think I'm on board now. It has been Capcom's goal to make the actual game look and play like the CG openings in the games, even with the handhelds.

They can somewhat do it now. I would call it MH5, but either they don't have the gut or it's the marketing reason.

Wow! Looked incredible. When it first opened up I was sure it was FROM's next game so I was slightly bummed for that. So to see it being MH really caught me off-guard but I was pleasantly surprised by how well they had re-imagined it for a western audience (me).

Being a diehard Monster Hunter fan, I'm not getting the "wtf is this" response. It looked like another MH game with some (much needed) new features.

As a long time MH player I never cared about the console or the graphics. I started playing MH on the PSP, I had the PSP with the green lines problem. I can say I spend thousands of hours on the multiple portable MH. moved from the PSP to the 3DS when MH 4 was announced. After what I saw and the key points from the Capcom press release I can say this MH is not form me. I did not like some of the changes they introduced on MH 4, and this game seems to build on those changes and take them to the next level.

I hope the rumors are right and MH 5 builds and focus on the traditional aspects of the game that I like. I also hope this game does well, having one MH focused for the West and one focused for Japan and traditional fans of the game is a good way to expand the game without alienating existing fans.

Only after the hunt in the immediate area is done or I'll kick you. :)

gotta do it when nobody looks at you!

It isn't named 5 so I don't know.

äääh... you know not all main entries are not numbered right? XX is a main entry.

But dont know sounds better then definitly i guess

or Talismans for that cookie cutter build you saw online.

yes and then you farm it up and use it one time to never using it again because you dont like it

good times, cant wait to sink many hours in XX!

I feel like the rumor has colored people's perception before giving the game a fair shake. That plus the usual console warrior dickwaving, and a portion of the fanbase being completely resistant to change, seems to be generating a whole lot of animosity.

Some questionable visual direction though. Capcom is a mess this gen.

Yep, looks like MHW won't have monster fighting........... lol

It will obviously be in the game but MH is about fighting monsters. How do you not show that in the trailer? I have a ton of faith in the main MH team but that trailer just didn't do it for me.

Multi platform and not tied exclusive to one platform like Switch only is a relief

MH games been exclusive to Nintendo systems for so long

It's open world.
Grappling hook bullshit.
Weird firefly vision
Stealth
Drop in co-op

Haha please. If this were a trailer for another 3DS game, you would be embracing the grappling hooks and stealth as welcome changes. If bug staffs, jumping mounting attacks, and hunter arts didn't turn you off, why would a fucking grappling hook?

I mean, I loved Tri and MH3U on home consoles, but I've always been a fan of the portable titles more than the home console ones. What I wanted was MH5 on Switch, and hopefully that's what we're getting and this, as the leaks said, is just a spin-off.

I'll still try it. Who knows how it'll turn out, but I'm not very hopeful.

I hope the newer weapons like charge blade and switch axe are in.

Wonder if arts are in too? There really is so much we need to see. I want to see a full 4 party hunt to get a better idea of what's going on.

I was hype as soon as I saw the sword lol. I knew.

That said, I am concerned, heavily. "Western appeal" is still in the back of my mind.

Still, I'm pretty sure I'm day-one-ing this lol. And if XX comes over, day-one-ing that too. They'd have to really, really fuck some shit up for me not to play Monster Hunter.

Reading through the thread:

MH fans are understandably skeptical about this, given Capcom's history of "western appeal" revisions.... And the trailer showed little.

People on the "I will only try MH if it's HD" camp are understandably happy, this is what they asked for, but some failed to realised that this is not what some of the fans asked for.

Fans of any game want more of the same but better.

And then you get console warriors who are fighting a war with the invisible posters who are whining about the game not being on Switch, because I have yet to see a single post complaining about that, only those complaining about people complaining about that.

Sums it up perfectly.

I hate stealth in games as a general rule so no I wouldn't.

I would? Go look at my post history when it comes to Monster Hunter.

I hated them adding mounting to 4 and I hated them adding styles and arts to X. This has nothing to do with what platform the game is on.

to be fair, Capcom's multiple previous attempts at trying to change beloved IPs to suit western tastes have done a lot of perception-coloring of their own.

the console war shit is insane to me as someone who just goes where MH does.
