Age of Empires Definitive Edition Announced [Windows 10]

I was in the beta for Age of Kings. They sent me a CD and a printed manual riddled with errors and placeholders. It was amazing. Back when betas were betas.

Maybe when I'm home this summer I'll scan some pics and make a thread.

as I said earlier, I hope they tweak the color palette a bit before release. The OG version felt a bit more vibrant, IMHO.

This isn't just a hd version clearly

Where the fuck is my rise of nations anyway

here?

You do know both games have been remastered and are on steam?
Neither were remastered they are hd versions

This one is an actual remastered

What is going on here with people trying to correct others without knowing why this version is new and different the fuck

And hd or remastered or remake or sequel of Ron u plebs that Ron is the same as the disc version and released years ago yeah thanks

this one is actually the only thing close to remastered if they actually modernize the UI and gameplay a bit

you can get the cd versions of aoe2/ron to basically look like the steam versions. it's mostly just a resolution change. they might have changed some shadows or something, but that isn't really important

How well does AoE: II HD hold up anyhow? I haven't played the original in around 15 years and I suck at RTS.

It's still one of best, if not the best RTS game out there. It's pretty much timeless. Graphics look clean in the HD version too. I still play it today and prefer it over any other RTS game out there. It kind of depends on what you like in your RTS. Some people like the ones that's all troop management but I love AoE II because of the perfect balance of base building, resource gathering, and combat. For an RTS it's easy and fun to pick up and difficult to master. The community is still alive and the game is still getting updates.

Actually AoE 1 is the one that didn't age all that well, especially compared to AoE II.

Speaking of which, they said they're going to be tweaking AoE: Definitive gameplay and UI to address the aspects that aged poorly so we've got that to look forward to.

Hnnggg, I live for the Babylonian building styles, so damn good. I'm glad they're keeping the new one faithful to the old look.

But they said you can go back to the classic game too so that's neat. Won't happen but it would be cool to play the old graphics with the new enhancements.

Yeah I think a more vibrant color palette would definitely push this to "Don't ever need to look at the old style again" territory.

Alright, you convinced me to install AoE: II HD, gonna give it a whirl sometime later this week!

I played AoE1 more than 2 back in the day but I remember more of 2 than I do of 1.

Cool it's getting a fair bit of work put into it, but AoE2 always had much better gameplay. Hopefully the tweaks they mention improve it. I do love the ancient setting more than medieval.

Not sure about the updated graphics though. Will reserve judgement till I can have a proper look on my pc at home though.

Good to see the franchise still being remembered, but give us AoE4 Microsoft!

What an awesome surprise. Kind of weird that they're doing a beta for it though, unless it's more than just a straight up remaster?

Might end up being like Microsoft's recent games. UWP version is Windows 10/Store and Steam version is Win32 and works on older OS.

After all, all the strategy games Microsoft have re-released have come to Steam.

They're just hd versions of the old games, this is a top to bottom remaster/remake whatever you want to call it.

I can't even play the hd versions because the UI is too small for 1440p displays.

I'm guessing if a game is built using Win32 technology or has a functional Win32 build lying around Microsoft is happy with publishing those versions on Steam. The Windows Store does not directly support Win32 programs unless it is packaged on the .appx format.

Pretty happy to see this. Guess this is the best I can hope for given I'm unlikely to see an actual new AoE game.

They said that they're going to be celebrating AoE's 20th anniversary at Gamescom and that they'll have more announcements, so all is not lost yet.

I hope they'll make different units for all civs because original game had almost all of them identical, except maybe for special ones, I don't actually remember well. About units: There where mods for them? I admit I don't know original game mod scene, were there cool mods, not only units-related? Because I actually own the original discs. I remember month ago for mods but I don't remember what I found. Anyway, any suggestions?

I wish they would port all the HD versions over to Mac :( its basically the only game that I miss playing that hasn't been ported over (now that Sim City 4 has been)

Anyone signed up for the beta? I try to sign, but I'm stuck at the e-mail sending stuff. I sign up and says nothing, not a mail either

Still 50 unit cap in the campaign?

I have a feeling the low unit cap is one of those things that will be changed, considering they talked about "QoL improvements" inspired by latter games on the series. Improved pathfinding and the ability for units to walk through farms could be others.

This game will be rebalanced?

Also will be cool if they could differentiate the units between civilization a little more

I noticed the farms are different I think

yeah, they are. They're lacking the "house" building in the middle - so they look more like the AoE2 farms now.

I hope they keep the hat and the farming animation. I don't know why, but I love it.

Still can't sign up for the beta. I did sign up for then newsletter, so maybe it's down.

I wonder if the re-orchestrated OST will be from the base game and the expansion like with AOE2HD, or just of the first one

I just realised something painful, this is going to be Windows 10 only. I'm still on 7 and had no plans to upgrade any time soon. Nooo! ;_;

Me too! I remember I was picked because I participated in the AoK Heaven community (which is still alive). I still have one of the two beta discs somewhere. What a time to be alive :p
