big sis todoroki is pretty cool.

the expansion on todoroki's trip to his mum is really good, even if the bg and bg character animation is absolute garbage lol.

yeah part of combat smarts is your shit actually working. it's no use coming up with a brilliant plan if it doesn't work out because you are bad at opponent prediction

Yeah which failed and then they lost their head bands

So i wouldn't call him the smartest

Really? That´s your argument? There´s a thing called a quirk advantage. Mineta´s team was very outmatched quirk wise. Mineta showed that he can plan and strategies with what they have, while everybody else hand picked their team. He is one of the smartest.

He used what they had the best way possible. They were outmatched by a lot. Intelligence alone does not cut it to win tournaments if one does not have the quirk to back it up.

combat smarts is making your quirk work for you. you can definitely have bad matchups, but figuring out how to bounce back from a fight you've already lost on paper is part of being a good combat stratagist.

Mineta picked his team in cavalry in any event; tsuyu mentions she only teamed up with him because his plan was good. It was a decent generalised plan, but mineta's use of his own quirk pretty much boils down to 'throw sticky grapes at everything and hope something works out' - he's got to work on that.

also he managed to lose his headband while inside armdude's fleshshield cave thing

Man awesome conclusion to the tournament

Its crazy how no one ever gives Bakugo what he truly desires for the entirety of his life up to this point

He is probably the only one with such a concise goal but he cant deal with the fact that everyone else has their own shit to deal with

He cant stand not being the focus of everyones attention its nuts. I wonder if we will get his story at some point

During the race he used it pretty good. From speeding up to piggybacking off Momo.

well he's already a little better than the start of term, the ura match reflected that, but todokori not giving him a 'worthy match' really triggered his buttons

He's not adjusting well to the adult world is he lol

I would like to see him crack a bit since everyone else appears to be developing mentally but hes stuck in his childlike state of constant tantrums
All it showed him there were people on his level people he need to beat to be number also taught him not to brute force even then IIRC todoroki pointed he had good combat sense.

As of right now he is still incredibly single minded

That and "...Deku and you were 'best friends' right?"

#Triggered
Someone worthless and below him made him feel weak and resented him for that.

Also he has no friends the only ones that actually like him is Kirishima and he just likes manly things

This season has been a complete bore for me. Hopefully things pick up now that they're done with the obligatory shounen tournament.

I wonder how his parents felt, watching their son chained and gagged.
Knowing Bakugou that's is probably how they punish an angry kid with explosins

funnier when his mom is just a gender bent version of him, like exactly him same except with boobs and hotter

What's with Gundham Tanaka's pet bird face here

the most disturbing thing about tokoyami isn't his chunibyou or his dark shadow powers

it's that his beak has teeth
He is still human

Also Blackleg's was right of course what a surprise
i already knew who was going to win

Man I cried a bit in the part with Tenya and Ingenium. I didn't cry when I read the manga so it was unexpected. I think reading the chapter in the spin-off manga where he appears made me care abou him.

So is Bakugou the smartest fighter in the class? Seems that way.

easily. no one else is even close.

todoroki relies on the strength of his power too much.
momo should be in the running, but for whatever reason she has zero combat experience
deku is supposed to always be watching and analyzing others but doesn't always apply the knowledge when it counts (i could just be mad he talked to the mindcontrol guy when he knew the only way his power would work is if he talked to him, bakugo wouldn't have been that dumb)

also, deku doesn't have a good understanding of his own power

That a great episode. Sad that the sports festival has to end, but there were some great moments we got. Did anyone else get emotional during those last few minutes? Starting from Iida riding the train to the hospital? Man, those scenes hit me hard.

Code names next week! Can't wait.

Also, opinions from last week as E3 hype is starting to die down & I got a chance to watch: Stain, baby. So ready for the next arc to start.

Although i found Bakugo in latest episode funny for the first time, i find him usually really exhausting, hopefully he will start to change soon.

I think one thing that makes Bakugou really likable to me is that he doesn't just want to be the best because of the perks that come with being at the top, he genuinely really wants to earn the title with effort. And this episode really highlights that. If he gets handed something he feels he didn't deserve, he gets fucking upset instead of celebrating and pretending it makes him superior.

I love this arc because it features a bunch of really neat things about it.

No one got what they wanted in the end, including the winner. And Todoroki needed more than a speech to heal through trauma, it just put him on the right path. It's all really well done in that regard.

Bakugou's character arc is a slowburn. Based on how the rest of this season is paced, we should start see more into what makes him tic, but it all comes piecemeal.

Just a warning to avoid spoilers and heavily hinting at future stuff. If you feel like discussing spoilers remember you can always go to the manga thread, we love to talk about the anime too.

I also teared up at the Ingenium scene, and I totally blame the spin-off for making me care for Tenya. Bones is just killing it with the adaptation so far. So happy we are getting right into the next arc.

I wonder if them or another studio is willing to adapt the spin-off when it ends. Probably another studio.

Well he may be a hot head but he has the skills and better adaptability than anyone we have seen so far in the class. With more experience I am damn sure he would be top of the class if Deku was never given All for One.

It's interesting that Horikoshi went with an anticlimax for the grand finals like that. Appropriate, too, considering this is really supposed to be a sports festival and not something that any one character's fate really hinges on. Also, All Might's hugging was adorable and very appreciated.

That doesn't stop me from wishing we got a little bit more, though.

Great post
Laiza, if you ever do get back into writing and drawing more and get your own stuff out there, hit me up because wow that sounds awesome.
This is a really, really good post

Really late response, but d'awww! Thanks, you guys. I didn't expect that kind of response to my musings, heh.

Expanding on my thoughts a bit, these last few episodes have really driven home for me just how lopsided the power distribution really is in MHA. None of the female characters really have a heavy-hitting quirk like the top four do. (Amusingly, given Horikoshi's love of Western comics, this is in stark contrast to series like the X-Men, where the female characters have some of the strongest powers in that universe.)

Yaoyorozu comes closest with the sheer versatility of her power, but she has some pretty severe limitations, not the least of which is being limited to whatever technology is available in the MHA universe at the time. That's not to mention the fact that anything she can do, someone else could do with proper prep work (plus money and access to decent tech).

Jiro (whose name I forgot because she's been sidelined so hard with this arc), with different writing, could actually have been a contender for the grand finals - but Horikoshi really wanted to focus on three characters in particular, so here we are. (Also, the fact that her "power" stat is listed at E is really a disservice to her quirk's potential - and possibly misleading on top of that.)

Speaking of "power" - not one of the female characters in Class A has a high "power" stat. That alone is a huge red flag and something Horikoshi should've noticed before putting ink down on paper. If it were up to me, I would've replaced Invisible Girl (who is so irrelevant she's practically a wasted slot) with someone who would have a decently high level of power, and who could have taken a spot in the top 4 of the sports festival. Also of note: none of the female characters would rank high on the "looks like a villain" stat. I, personally, think that's a waste.

Give her a quirk that lets her look like she can't amount to much, but has incredible hidden potential - a sleeper, if you will. Give her an appearance evocative of oni so she can rank high on the "looks like a villain" stat (while still remaining somewhat acceptable for Japanese viewing audiences). Then have her quietly work her way into the tournament and force everyone to confront their preconceptions as she shakes up the status quo and feeds the (current) top four a good helping of humble pie.

Even with that seemingly major change, every single character could have ended up with a similar outcome, and we would've had a female character besides Ochako that doesn't seem irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Seeing a female character that everyone thought at the beginning would be as irrelevant as Invisible Girl is now make it all the way to the semifinals (if not the grand finals) would've been hype as fuck. Even moreso if her quirk requires creative application to get around its inherent lethality (remember, she's supposed to have a really high "power" rating).

Hell, it would've been great to have another foil to offset the current top three, who are all burning to get into that number one spot. I know that at least part of the point of this arc has been to hammer home the difference between those who are aiming for the top and those who aren't, but there's still room in there for someone who just aims for personal self-improvement, and for whom getting close to that top spot is just a consequence of that aim, rather than a primary goal.

Anyway, I'm not going to put any more thought into this than that. It's just a neat "what-if". Hopefully the female cast gets a bit more screen time going forward to offset what a sausage fest the top 4 became. To be honest, my expectations are pretty low at this point, so I'll just be pleasantly surprised to see any one character (besides Ochako) boosted to relevancy. I look forward to seeing what Horikoshi has in store.

Well said.

Bakugo needs to chill

All the time.

Bakugo is just annoying. Really shitty antagonist.

Meh, he's getting better, I enjoy the slow burn.

Those All Might hugs :D

The best hugs!

Tbh, I'd be just as interested in one of the female characters pulling a "Luffy". Where one has a power that seems kinda lame/boring/dumb on the surface and people underestimate it, but turns out it's just as versatile as say Bakugo. Tsuyu would be a great example for instance, hopefully she gets to do more.

But yea, it'd be nice to have both that and a character with a power that's blatantly overpowered.

Well, at this point it's the only thing we can hope for since the overpowered route is out of the running.

Tsuyu is definitely up there in that regards, yeah. Frogs can do some pretty amazing things. I hope Jiro gets a lot more screen time too, as she's my favorite of the current cast. But of course I'd say that - she's the closest thing in this series I have to a self-insert, heh.

Tbh, I think Ashido has a powerful and versatile quirk. She was at least very creative with it during the festival.

Also, she can pack a punch, knocking out Captain Sparkle with one hit.

Bakugo.. Man even seeing him triggers me hard.
Fucker is almost Sasuke Uchiha/Light Yagami tier trash. Piece of shit. Let's see how he will develop.

Edit: scratch that 'almost', he IS bottom tier
