I'm noticing a lot of celebrities are advertising the Switch now

I saw Mike Shinoda buying a Switch and I doubt Nintendo transfered him money for that. It is not suprising that people that tour a lot like or at least want to try the device. There are paid ads like this but a lot of the stuff we are now seeing looks like it is not part of that.

Nintendo is obviously sending free Switches to celebs in hopes that they'll be spotted with them or, best case scenario, they actively post positively about it on social media. It's not without precedent: Youtubers get free shit from gaming companies/ publishers all the time for the free publicity via their genuine enthusiasm. That's how marketing works.

Of course the chance that at least one of the celebs wanted a Switch even before all this or just bought one with their own money is well above 0.

Yep. He did a poll, then bought a neon set with Zelda.

I am not saying this to talk smack on the switch as I think it is a nice concept but it really isn't any different than say any system that was able to plug into your tv.

They only made it look more appealing while actually being harder to do (connect to your tv) the whole slide into your base is marketing 101 but not actually better.

That is the only aspect of it that I don't like, I would rather it just plug into a tv simply... the other obvious and main draw is that it's their main console so it gets all the big games easily on the go. That to me is the key, not the fact that it's just portable. Not sure if it works for Sony/MS though...

The big change in this context is the portability. It's a *huge* increase in portable gaming performance. Combine that with maybe sending some free ones to famous people, who are often on the road touring or going to games, or whatever and therefore really benefit from not being tied to a TV, and a significant growth in social media since the previous gen of consoles, and you have a perfect storm for getting lots of exposure for the switch

See this is quite likely. Though that's not a paid advertisement, and it's somewhat dubious that Nintendo would send it to a gangsta rapper. The Weeknd is no iJustine.

Dude he's not a "gangsta rapper" either. He doesn't rap much and he's definitely not "gangsta". He's a singer.

Dude, he is black and a singer (I think?). Of course he is a gangsta rapper. Has someone ever heard of a black singer who is not a gun wielding, drug munching rapper?

I saw the korean girl group Sonamoo play Switch about a week ago.

http://www.vlive.tv/video/30463

Don't think they got paid for playing it either. Just enjoying what their company bought them ^^ I guess we can break it down to: Switch is just a good product for pretty much everyone, seriously. I can't imagine myself going out to events or meetings without taking that thing with me. And even if it's just to play a quick round of Mario Kart.

This is just a side effect of the Switch phenomenon. Popularity knows no bounds. It's enjoyed by regular mortals and famous people alike.

Rocking the boat? In what way

Disturbing the equilibrium by blurring the line between handhelds and consoles, in addition to potentially retaking a sizeable chunk of the games industry when traditionally thought of as an outlier.

It's new territory, basically, and people can be resistant to change.

I'm sure there are some celebs out there who genuinely like it, but you're a bit deluded if you think all of this is completely organic.

It's cutre seeing people deny these are paid promotions/PR campaign lol

It seems like Nintendo is paying and hooking up a lot of celebrities that are legit gaming fans. It's a smart idea, and certainly better then giving someone like Paris Hilton a free system.

I mean they probably do genuinely like the Switch, but they know Nintendo will pay them for advertising so you'd be a fool to think they'd do it for free.

Many people on Neogaf seem to be amazingly naive about the extent of how pervasive hidden advertising actually is. It would only make incredible business sense for companies to have people hired to write and post good things about them. I would be shocked if not even one user on Neogaf is a shill for some company. Just go to r/hailcorporate on Reddit to see the extent of it all.

Of course. I'm not under any illusions that this whole thing isn't at least somewhat pushed by Nintendo's marketing... get some Switches in the hands of certain celebrities and see what happens. But having said that, I don't think that there's any clear dotted line of "we sent you this for free: now fly, FLY to social media!" conspiracy that some people in this thread seem to be propagating.

I don't know who's a gamer or not in the celebrity world, but it's presumable that some of these celebs tweeting or instagraming about the Switch may be casual or lapsed gamers. And guess what? Some of their memories of gaming may be Nintendo related. Mario is still probably the biggest recognizable gaming icon in the lay world, and Mario Kart is a huge part of that. Hell, Marshawn Lynch and Gronk started talking about Mario Kart in a Clueless Gamer when they were playing the completely unrelated Mortal Kombat. Is it really that incredulous that some celebrities may have seen a hot ticket new item with Mario Kart or Zelda and said "hey, I want one of those?"

I know in my experience, more of my friends and family have been way more interested in the Switch than they were about the Wii U, if they even knew what the fuck it was. They don't give a shit about Teraflops, or that technically you could hook up a Vita and do something similar, or whatever bullshit perseveration that GAF has at any given moment. They see a tablet playing Mario Kart you can take anywhere with instant multiplayer. That's the hook. And hey, if I'm The Weeknd, that's kinda cool even if I'm a fucking star.

I don't think there are many people here who are unaware of paid for product placement. The question is whether every Instagram post that contains a product is a paid for advertisement, or whether the more traditional personal branding still exists, where (the social media managers of) celebrities show little insights into the life of a celeb to improve fan bonding. This guy is a fan of Mario Kart just like you, he's like your friend, buy more albums. Or you know, maybe they genuinely control their own Instagram (prolly not the Weeknd, but some others definitely).

And on the other hand we have people who think that everytime a Celeb names a product, no matter the circumstances, it's advertising.

I think both is pretty dumb.

I don't disagree with your main thesis but this sentence is unintentionally funny since /r/hailcorporate is generally considered kind of a joke.

I don't know what it's generally considered to be, but in my personal experience it has used to be a good showcase of advertising that is subtle yet overwhelming. Of course maybe not everything posted there was actually done by a shill, but I'd be amazed if a lot wasn't.

This is already the default traveling console for footballers (yes there is no current alternative; what is interesting is that the iPad isn't enough anymore). When FIFA hits there basically won't be any high level team traveling without a bunch of Switch players having fun together amongst them.

From another thread, football teams at the Russian Confederation Cup

Chilean Team

Australian Team
Was gonna cross post this.

To think that this is with Mario Kart, can't imagine the craze it's going to generate with FIFA among soccer players.

Nintendo sure is expending big bucks on advertisement, they are stealing our celebrities.

FIFA on Switch is going to make them stupidly common amongst pro footballers. Loads of them play anyway so to be able to carry it around is gonna be a real plus.

I actually think FIFA is going to be a huge seller for Switch. If Nintendo market it properly, or even do a bundle, it will absolutely make bank in the EU. It's Lara rivalry a religion amongst the boys at the school where I teach. FIFA, Minecraft and Pokemon - all franchises the Switch either has or will have.

The switch is going to be really popular this Christmas holidays. FIFA, Mario, Mario kart, Splatoon, Zelda, Rocket League, Skyrim... all of that on the go, it's just going to be irresistible to many.
