BO Wkd 06•16-18•17 - Queen is dethroned, all hail McQueen, ScarJo roughed up

Zach Snyder exists on GAF but strictly because he's synonymous with pain, suffering and pure hatred.

Hey now. Snyder is better than Kurtzman and Goyer. He has real talent. He just needs a co-director, producer, or scriptwriter with enough clout to go "No. Don't do that." His issue is in the excess and bombast, not the ability. The other two have just failed upward.

Bronson will be an entirely CG creation.

I'm going with a puppet.

I am going to say $775M for The Last Jedi.

I know that we have had the Carrie Fisher argument several times, but TFA had the second best run of the past 30 years, so I don't think said bump is enough to offset other pressures this time around.

You say that now...

Justice League has Thanksgiving week leading into weekend #2.

TFA also had the built in hype of finally being a sequel to the original trilogy. They can't replicate that kind of hype and anticipation.

How Barbara Gordon will Justice League's legs be?

If Bruce Timm has a say, the legs will be wrapped around Batman.

Yeah I'm not ready to put a number out there but I think Last Jedi will be slightly down from Force Awakens.

The build up and hype for that film were like nothing I've ever seen

What was first? Titanic?

I think that the 5-min scene (or scene splice) that they were showing ahead of IMAX films this past month or so did a much better job at selling the film than the teaser or first trailer did.

I'm hoping that the talk of a 1h 40m film with little dialogue and a lot of suspenseful action is reflected of the actual movie.

I finally saw a Dunkirk trailer when I went and watched Wonder Woman. The trailer I watched was just awful, and if the rest of them are like that one, the lack of buzz makes a lot of sense to me. Whoever put that thing together should have been roasted.

Yes. By pretty much every metric except the speed at which it got there.

Before Titanic, no film had made more than $360M in their initial run. A New Hope was at $460M thanks to the 1997 special edition re-release, but E.T. and Jurassic Park were the only films to break $350M in one go. Titanic made $600M.

Before Titanic, Jurassic Park held the worldwide record at just shy of $925M. Titanic doubled that.

Well, the biggest problem might be that his producing partner is also his life partner. I'm happy for them, and it worked out for Nolan, but he could definitely do with working with another creative with lots of experience who can help him improve his craft. Especially in the polish. The ideas are great, the execution is hit or miss.

Also, we sure dodged a mega-bullet with Orci. His name almost got added to the list there! Soon we're be adding Kinberg too. *cough*

I remember broaching the idea of a getting a podcast summer prediction thing with a few regulars in the thread. It was a bit too late to set things up, but it is something I'm interested in trying to do for September-December, because there's a lot of potentially exciting box office runs this year.

BronsonLee would be guaranteed a spot, of course, so that I would at least do better than one person.

It's still too far out for me to call, but I do marvel at the notion that a conservative estimate for a domestic run can occupy an area north of $750mil.

There's a lot of play when you're working with a follow up to a $937M gross.

Avengers to Age of Ultron drop? - $690M
The Dark Knight to TDKR drop? - $785M
Star Trek to Into Darkness drop? - $830M

It's on Canadian Netflix. I am not sure about other regions. I'll have to find some way to watch What We Do in Shadows before Thor 3 as well.

Looks like it's disc only in the US, sadly. Not on Amazon either. Damn.

At the very least, Wonder Woman was trying to be consistent with Snyder's approach at shooting action shots. Which is good, because the action in Suicide Squad was terrible in comparison to the rest of the DCEU films.

I would probably prefer that they reign back the reliance of slow motion pauses, but Snyder always was good at showing the super part of superheroes. Patty's film definitely followed up on that.

Honestly though, I hate Snyderverse action. Or rather, super-on-super action in the Snyderverse. I never really understood why so many people liked the fights in Man of Steel, because it was all just weightless ping-ponging.

JL should win if its good.

The only remaining BO performance I'm interested in this year is The Last Jedi. Can it get to $700m domestic?

I feel like $750m is a safe bet, low $800s optimistically. It won't pass TFA just because three films into the Star Wars revival I don't see it getting the insane repeat business, but America still loves its Star Wars.

A Phantom Menace to Attack of the Clones drop for The Last Jedi is still $657M. $2M shy of Titanic + re-release domestically.

This will be the first film in history where Sub-$700M domestic is considered a disappointment.

Jesus, lol.

Alice through the looking glass drop - $215M
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 drop - $231M
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 drop - $176M

I know it's literally impossible, but could you imagine what would happen if TLJ dropped that hard? lol

Those aren't my feelings on Snyder...I actually enjoyed Man of Steel and 300.

Yeah, have a feeling Homecoming isn't making a billion either. It will still make a ton of money ww, but it will be the first RDJ MCU film since Avengers to not crack $1b.

Man of Steel was uneven with some strong moments. 300 was based on a fairly rigid narrative template - Frank Miller's comics - that Snyder followed slavishly.

His best work overall remains Dawn of the Dead in my opinion. Sucker Punch is a testament to his problem being his excesses.

I didn't even know Cars 3 came out.....wwwooooowwww

Has there been marketing for the movie at all anywhere? Apparently its not on any of the channels I watch.
