What are we talking about? How old we were when Transformers came out?

I was 25. Bobby was already older than all of you complaining about being old are right now. Ghaleon was probably getting his senior citizen's discount in 2007 :p

Back in my day we didn't have franchises. We went to the cinema, we watched our North and then we went home and contemplated the bleakness of existence.

I guess this new Transformers movie features two very important historical figures in it playing somewhat important roles:

Merlin
and
Unicron

One of which has secretly been in every movie in the series the whole time.

Is Biggest still doing the podcast? I want to guest star, to counter Bronsonlee
If it happens, it will be in early September. I'd like it to be some sort of prediction competition, which involves me coming up with some sort of (hopefully) non-arbitrary set of rules and a cash prise of some sort.

Yep,
doing a Prime thing where Earth is Unicron.

Does anyone know if Cars 3 opens later in some EU countries? Apparently we here in Sweden won't get it for a while.

I saw Baby Driver today, insane movie which I fucking loved.

Movie Gaf brehs. I'm confused. Before it I got a trailer for Annabelle 2.
First of all why are they doing a sequel to this and more importantly holy shit is the "Conjuring Universe" a thing?
The next chapter in the Conjuring universe was the quote that popped up in the trailer I think.

What a time to be alive.

German Gaf reporting in. As always we get new Pixar movies in September. It opens September 28th here. Fucking bullshit.

I hate that "universe" is the term used for all of these franchises now, and I blame each and every one of you that insisted on calling The Dark Knight trilogy part of the "Nolanverse"

I hear you. The Conjuring Universe. I was like bruh you ain't got shit. Get outta here.

It's probably way more plausible to blame that sort of nomenclature on Whedon, whose properties spawned both the "Buffyverse" and the "Whedonverse" as terms that were rapidly picked up and spread, and then morphed to fit other fictional creations as necessary.

I dont' think the suffix -verse was INVENTED there, but it was certainly popularized there.

Hated when it happened to Wreck-It Ralph. Think it was something crazy like 6 months later here.

Shit, if we're going down this rabbit hole, I think the actual first coinage of a "universe" would be the Star Wars Expanded Universe, no?

I'm totally willing to redact my previous statement and instead blame the Star Wars EU for our current predicament.

Everything is part of a shared universe. I'm waiting for Pixar to start mashing their various franchises together after years of leaving hints that they're all connected.

I was 15 when I saw the first Transformers in the second run theater. I went with two friends (one of them had seen it before). The two of us that hadn't seen it hated it and the ride home was the third friend (who loved it) berating us for not liking it.

I never saw another one.

That wouldn't be the same because it's not taking the suffix and using it to create a snappy portmanteau out of it as a means to describe/differentiate the fiction from other fictions.

The Marvel Universe, the DC Universe - it's a slight difference, but definitely a difference as compared to The Whedonverse or the Nolanverse.

It's part of a larger phenomena accelerated by the internet where using pre-existing terminology for a thing is abandoned for the sake of using new, freshly created terminology to more humorously/creatively describe the exact same thing.

Basically - utility is swapped out for branding.

It's why everyone thinks everything is a reboot to some degree. Because people started using "reboot" instead of remake, and then started applying the term to things it didn't fit, and then started affixing descriptors to the ill-fitting term in order to MAKE it fit.

It's how you get direct sequels described as 'soft-reboots' instead of just... sequels.

(semantics is fuckin' somethin, ain't it?)

*checks the Transformers release date*

It would appear I was 16. So there's that, I guess?

I saw Revenge of the Fallen on my first date with my girlfriend. Somehow the relationship survived that - though they do say from adversity comes strength.

Annabelle made money, thus a sequel.

Thanks guys. Sony must be pretty excited with the quality of baby driver to do advance shows this early.

The quality speaks for itself. Movie is amazing. Fun from start to finish. Everything just comes together and works. Now the interesting part is whether this will finally be a hit for Wright or a flop like usual.

Betting on the latter given the release date. Which in fairness, isn't really Wright's fault than it is Sony's. The former August release date it previously held had less / weaker competition. Releasing it against Transformers --which despite consistently scathing reviews and declining domestic grosses, is still a overseas juggernaut-- is shipping it off to be buried.

I went to see Transformers: The Movie in theaters for my 7th birthday party since it opened within days.
I was 27, a month away from 28, when I saw the first Bayformers movie.

Watched the 2pac movie was actually worse than I was expected and borderline offensive to 2pac fans.
Ps Detroit and baby driver both look great is American assassin portraying the Tunisia beach massacre at the start?

This is where you discover that the Conjuring series (1, 2, and Annabelle) is the highest grossing horror series ever worldwide.

Annabelle made over $250M on a $6.5M budget.

I feel.. old.

I was 13 at that time the first came out.

You're not old, considering I'm not old and I saw Transformers the Movie in 86.

Preach brother, I was 6 when I saw Transformers: The Movie and 27 when I saw Bayformers. Also still not old, so you 90's brats saying you feel old about a 10 year old film should wait until at least you can get nostalgic about something with a 30th anniversary.

Transformers 5 presales are not ramping up nearly as fast as expected in China. Analysts over there might have been seriously over-estimating the film's Chinese Box Office potential.

The Last Knight's marketing has been bizarre. At least AOE's hook was "Mark Wahlberg, no Shia, and Dinobots".

5 will have King Arthur and Nazi's, the most well-trodden areas in cinema history.

Seems like they're banking on Evil Prime

On a related note, I rewatched Dark of the Moon today, and man, that shit was fucking terrible.

Love it. And funny since there was a Mr. Bean discussion at work today.

I haven't seen DotM since opening weekend but remember mostly enjoying it. I remember that Bay had to slow down his editing and speed to accommodate shooting in 3D, so you could mostly tell what the hell was going on.
And the sequence of Bumblebee transforming around Shia is still ace.

Dark of the Moon has some cool shots, but it was still pretty bad overall.

Optimus is so overpowered, that they had to have him get tangled up in some cables for half of the film to allow the other autobots and humans some time to attempt to do things for themselves. Of course, they can't.

The Autobots are like the Justice League. Superman can solo almost everything, so every crossover goes to great lengths to explain why Superman doesn't just solo everything.

Hey! That was a low blow.

2012

I've never seen one of Bay's Transformers movies and don't plan to.
