Do you work with someone who 1-Ups everyone else?

Yeah it would get to the point me and other coworkers would just start making up the most random, implausible shit we could and hear him 1-Up us. We had a pretty good run where we would take bets on who could come up with the most ridiculous thing and see if he would go for it.

Apparently this guy did a barrel roll on an ATV. Was way cooler than my backflip, I guess

This thread worries me, because I am pretty awesome and can pretty much do everything and I have a lot of cool stories about myself. So I'm nervous that I am one of the guys in the OP. Which happened to me twice in a DrinkyCrow and then Evilore thread.

I used to work with a guy at Toys 'R Us who, at the age of 24, claimed to be a former engineer, special forces agent, horse jockey and world champion kickboxer.

At some point we just started encouraging him to see what kind of shit he could come up with.

I knew a guy like this in high school. He spun amazing stories. Like about how he was the #1 ranked boy scout, but there was another scout who was so cold, everybody called him the ice man. Ice man was jealous of his boy scout skills, and always tried to sabotage him. But one day, they were cleaning up lanterns. He put his away perfectly, but Ice man wasn't so careful, and burned the whole camp down, but blamed it on this guy.

Or he was in a tae kwon do tournament, and it was crazy, and there were three matches going on at the same time and the crowd was going crazy, and he got to the final match but kicked too fast for the referee to see, so they called a foot fault and he lost.

There were a billion of them, like how when he was trying to impress some girl he was suddenly the best poet at the poetry slam he went to. Or how he was in discussions with Palladium to write an expansion for their rpgs. I think something about drag racing.

Sounds like an amusing, likeable guy
yes depending on the person some of them can be likeable

When he's not being overbearing with it, yes, in general he is actually likable. Other time, you want to kill him.

Fuckin those guys. I encourage them to talk further on subjects. It helps everyone realise what cunts they are faster.

I dig your cool stories and like sharing anecdotes, too.

Most of my anecdotes involve the time I hung up on Harlan Ellison, though.

Most of those you have listed are easily done. Car and home repairs are 100% googled.

Maybe OP is envious of another person's successes?

Nope. I actually find half the stuff he says amusing. He is actually using things which are plausible and possible so they can't be called lies, but I've caught him in discussion BSing on a few things which I knew about. He has stories which honestly, you just know he's making up. Sometimes, we egg it on because the stories get amusing. It's just annoying sometimes.

As for my life, I don't have much, but I'm happy. Don't need to make things up so my life sounds better to others. Also, you don't generally Google roof repair and just do it... alone... with no prior experience/safety measures..etc. I'm talking like, repairing beams, not just replacing some shingles as one example.

Edit: Stormhammer: Yep, asked him if he could forge armor as a call out to how ridiculous the level of things he was saying he could do got. Then, he said he could. I know some Ren Faire people and others that actually do this. This guy isn't those guys. That said, it was funny as hell.

So not worth it
My uncle is exactly like that. Very unlikable traits. Especially that one time he worked as first line support in a call center for a ISP (guy has a new job every other year, I wonder why) and became a computer expert and tried to school me and an aunt (his sister-in-law) on routers... we are both in IT, I have a college degree and maintain a midlarge server pool for work.

If there is one thing I have learned in life is that you can bullshit your way throuh a lot of things by pretending you know what your talking about, but you have to be very careful that you know who you are trying to bullshit. My uncle has not learned this lesson, and comes of insanely stupid because of it.

I worked for Wizard: The Comics Magazine. And I got it into my head to interview Harlan Ellison for Sci-Fi Invasion, which was a sister publication.

So I called Harlan Ellison. And he was grumpy. He told me he didn't have time to talk so I thanked him for his time and hung up the phone.

Except Ellison kept talking. And I heard him talking as I put the phone down. It sounds dumb and fantastical, but it was a moment where I was perfectly aware of what I was doing yet sort of looking at it from a distance that I didn't stop myself. I also understood exactly what was going to happen next.

I told the other copy editor I'd just hung up on Harlan Ellison and that he was going to call back. Sure enough, Ellison called and threatened "to stomp my dick in the dirt." He also told me he was going to speak to the boss.

Not to get overlong with this, but Ellison HATES being up on. He hates rejection and is not shy about seeking revenge. He wanted me scared and then he wanted to get me punished or fired or whatever.

I wasn't scared, but I was sorry. I'd read Ellison's stuff and knew what I'd done, even if I did it accidentally. So I explained the situation, told him I was sorry, and then offered to transfer him to my boss.

There was a long pause. Finally, he said he accepted my apology. "Don't do it again," he told me, and hung up on me.

It's not cool if it's true.
It can be both!

There is nothing wrong with having a high self esteem and having awesome true stories. I think it all depends on how much it comes off as bragging instead of cool stories or anecdotes.

If you are worried about how you are being perceived vs. how I am perceiving this guy, find the most honest people you know and ask them what they think. No matter what they answer, try to not be defensive about what they come out with. Just let them tell you. Hopefully the people you ask will be straight forward.

What do you call someone who downplays all their successes and is a pretty much a -1 uppers. Is there such a thing?

My dad calls people like this 'blackcatters'; as in if you say you have a black cat, theirs will invariably be blacker.

I witnessed something like this yesterday between two people I work with. They were sharing stories, but it was almost.. aggressive? Like one would go "this happened to me" and they'd respond "oh yeah, well THIS happened to me", followed by "THAT REMINDS ME THIS HAPPENED TO ME" and they just kept going.

I just tried my best to zone out until they were done.

Yes it was exactly like this but with two people and not for comedy.

Yep. There definitely is. Self Deprecating behaviour. Mostly shows up as jokes when someone tells a story, and then someone tells a joke which says why they fail at something.

IE... Someone says they're amazing at ____ Insert shooter game. Someone says they'd join in, as long as the team is cool with someone dragging them down, and continues on to explain in joke fashion how they would do best at killing friendlies.

I worked with someone who thought he was gods gift to the world up until a few weeks ago. We both applied for the same position within the company and I got the job. I'm so much happier now.

Like they say, you can't bullshit a bullshitter.

I've known people like that, but I don't work with any now, thank god

Worst are the weird 1upers that are like "man you think YOUR life sucks/Your foot hurts/[something negative], listen to this!" and talk about how shitty their lives are. I dealt with a lot of them when I worked food service and retail, lolol

Oh?... hrmm... bad advice? I was hoping that if you wanted to know what people really thought, this was how to know. Something as a way to get constructive criticism.

I hope that wasn't as bad as it sounds like it might have turned out.

Hmmm. Pretty sure this is becoming thing though. I don't know if it's to fly under the radar or avoid additional responsibilities but I am seeing it. Boss assigns a task where the usual 1-uppers volunteer but that one person says I'm not that good or I suck at Excel knowing damn well they are T'Challa with the SQL/Formula's. It's like a fly not too low or not too high mentality.

I am not a one upper at all when telling stories, I'm too boring for that. I do sort of try to one-up people when working though. I know I am the fastest, and best, employee we have and I take pride in it, so anytime me and a coworker are working on a same product/project I make sure to put in an extra effort so I finish my stuff much faster, and keep an air of superiority.

Op call him out on his lies, he's got the best mortgage right? Ask him the % then either lie that yours is lower or have GAF fork over numbers.

Just start 1-uping HIM, seeing the shoe on the other foot will get extremely annoying.

Basically your two options.
Most entertaining ones that is.

Yes, I work with some like this. Even if she has nothing relevant to add to the discussion, she'll come out with something to better whatever we are talking about. It's really draining biting my lip sometimes. As much as I'd love to call her out on it, I can't be arsed dealing with the inevitable fall out.

y so jelly op?

Seriously, by the points you made, seems like this 1-up dude is just someone that loves to learn new things and by the way, you can learn a LOT with youtube. There're people that like to do/fix things by themselves...
