"I Need a New PC!" 2017 The Ryzing of Kaby Lake and NVMwhee!

I'm getting a Strix 1080 TI. I have a 3570k processor, OCed to 4,4 ghz. I will be gaming partly in 4k on a normal 60 hz TV and partly in 1440p on 165 hz gsync monitor. Will I be bottlenecked you think?

I personally think it's more likely that I will be bottlenecked playing in 1440p, since I will get to higher framerates. But on the 4k tv?

Thanks.

So I finally finished my first build ever however I think I made a big mistake by getting a usb wifi adapter instead of a pcie :/

The download speed is like half than what's on other devices, would getting a pcie adapter fix this?

This is the adapter I got btw

Since my modem/WiFi router is at the other end of our apartment, ethernet was not an option for me so I've been trying various different USB adapters, all rather cheap and they sucked. Never reached the advertised 300 MBit/s (more like 5-8 MBit/s), losing connections constantly etc. I finally opted for a small Wifi Repeater with an Ethernet port. Plugged it in in the same room the PC is in, connected to the repeater using the ethernet cable and haven't looked back since. I'm maxing out my connection now.

Finally yesterday I was able to assemble everything, r5 1600, gigabyte gaming 3, and 16gb gskill ram, everything went smooth, I updated win10 and every driver and bios, after that I set xmp profile and now I'm in a boot loop, was getting late so today I have to solve it, any suggestion? To bring the ram clock higher I suspect I need to ignore xmp and just raise parameters manually till it's stable? What I can use to test system stability?

Inevitably you will hit a bottleneck. It's just a matter of where. Your CPU is the most likely candidate, but it shouldn't be a massive hit, only a few fps here and there. It should be the next thing to upgrade if you want to transition to 4K.

Thanks. I've already transitioned to 4k really, I will play "cinematic" console like games on the 4k tv in full 4k and competitive/FPS/strategy games in 1440p.

Considering my specs, what would be the recommended cpu? Is the i5 7600k still the go to option, even with my higher demands? I will overclock, and have a Kraken x62 cooler. I've looked at the i7 7700k but am not sure how big a performance benefit I will get. Gaming is the priority, not really much editing or anything like that.

The 4 extra threads are starting to come in handy in gaming. If you got the money for a 1080ti I would say don't cheap out on the CPU as well.

Anyone know why a mouse wont work properly after performing a cmos reset?

It works fine in the Bios after the reset but in windows im not able to click, but i can still move the mouse cursor around.

Its a bluetooth wireless mouse, ive tried updating drivers, uninstalling the device and replugging the wireless reciever.

It acts the same way in safe mode.

Any suggestions?

Anyone?

Is now a good time to invest in a 1080ti? My primary concern isn't price per second, it's that I want to make sure whatever I end up getting lasts me for a while. When I got my 980 it seemed like a good idea but the GPU landscape moved really fast and dx12 came right after it along with other advancements and it felt like it got left behind pretty hard. I have an Acer predator x34 as my display. My machine struggles with reaching 60 from everything to PUBG to AAA games if I try to run games full resolution with above medium effects. With the X1X on the horizon do you guys think developers will make a new push for even higher max settings on PC? Sorry my question is kind of a jumble but I don't want to get burned again basically.

If you're going 4K you may want to wait for Volta, but if you play on a lower res a 1080ti should serve you well.

I don't think I'll go above 3440x1440 for a while. That's under 4K but I wanted to mention it specifically since it's unconventional.

I'd think a Ti would be able to handle that resolution well for a few years, although the Volta would probably get you another year or so if you could hold off.

Hey PC-GAF! Looking for some advice on my next upgrade as I'm a bit torn on what would give me the most immediate performance boost. I can either upgrade my cpu/mobo/ram or my video card. I really can't afford to upgrade all 4 right now.

I'm mostly playing PUBG on a mix of Low to Medium/High and struggling to maintain 60fps @ 1080p. I know the game is still needs optimization, but I'd like to get performance/visuals closer to what I see on streams. I'm also planning to get Destiny 2 in October.

I own a 1080p 60hz monitor so 1440 and beyond isn't really a concern for me right now. However I'd like to be able to run the aforementioned games on High+ settings and maintain a stable frame-rate.

So what do you think would give me the most bang for my buck right now?

Thanks in advance for any help!

My Current Rig:

i5-4690k 3.5
Kingston - 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
ASRock - Z97 EXTREME4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
MSI - GeForce GTX 970 4GB 100 Million Edition Video Card

Potential Upgrades:

i7-7700k 4.2
Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
MSI - Z270 KRAIT GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

OR

MSI - Gaming GeForce GTX 1080 8GB

Anyway I dont think right now its a good time to buy a new Graphics card with the prices of the crypto currency craze right now. If you cant wait for Volta I would wait at least until Vega is released just in case Nvidia changes prices.

I know PUBG its a cpu intensiv game but I think you will benefit more from the GPU upgrade.

Well I snagged one a month ago and I also play at 3440x1440. I had similar issues with a 980TI.

With a 1080TI, there's no game that it struggles hitting 60 FPS in (except Quantum Break sans scaling). Usually I'm only seeing 80% max on GPU load as well unless I increase the resolution further via DSR.

I think it will be a solid card for a while... though I'll still probably swap it out a year from now :p

I have the same setup as you bar a few different brand names. I upgraded my 970 to a 1080. Our CPUs should be good for a little while longer.

Thanks appreciate the feedback! Yeah that's kind of where I was leaning (after going back and forth in my head for the past few weeks). Thanks again!

GAF what is the best place to shop for a new monitor online? I am trying to bargain hunt here. I want something in the 27-30" size range, but it doesn't have to be cutting edge or anything.

Edit: I just went with the ASUS VG248QE in the OP.

Feels like there aren't a lot of good deals these days. I think we need to see those Intel CPUs actually launch, then see Threadripper launch, and finally see the RX 470/480/570 cards with 4 GB or fewer VRAM become less useful for mining before we'll see any great pressure on the prices of CPUs or GPUs.

This is the year for upgrading my gaming PC. The last time I replaced my MB and CPU was... 2010. It's been running strong for 1080p gaming, with some minor upgrades over the years (increasing to 12GB RAM, adding an SSD, upgrading the GPS to an R9 390).

My current rig is:

i7 950
ASUS P6X58D Premium
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-850TX 850W PSU
HyperX 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
R9 390

Right now I'm mostly getting 30-60 fps at 1080p with medium/high settings, and I LOVE the fact that my rig has lasted as long as it has. So part of me is thinking, if it ain't broke don't fix it? If I do anything, I'm looking to upgrade the CPU, MB and SDRAM this year.

Ryzen looks enticing but it's been decades since I've gone with an AMD CPU and wasn't too impressed with it back then. I don't expect to go to 4K gaming anytime soon, so I'll be sticking with 1080p for the foreseeable future. Just want to get rock solid 60fps at 1080p with modern games and excellent image quality, and something that will last me a few years.

I'm not an overclocker, so I'm just looking for stock speeds. And whatever I get I want it to have lower power consumption and heat generation. I don't really feel like messing with water cooling.

What say you, PC-GAF? What chipsets/components should I be looking at?

Well, there's a deal on the R7 1700X, where it's $296+Tax if you order it for pickup at Wal-Mart. Get an Asrock X370 Gaming K4, a decent air cooler (like a Cryorig H7 or Reevan Justice) and some DDR4 3000 RAM, and you'll be set.

If you're a bang for your buck man, get an R5 1600(X), and follow the recommendations above, maybe swapping out the X370 Gaming K4 for a Gigabyte B350 Gaming 3.

Also, I failed to mention I've been an Asus fan for the past 20 years of PC builds. I've built a couple of secondary PCs with Gigabyte and MSI components, but never ASRock. I've always associated them as a B-tier brand. Do folks here stand by the brand?

In general yeah but for am4 sockets the taichi and the pro4 are pretty much top of their class right now

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
Is the i5 7600 worth the extra $20 over the 7500? Wondering if I should return the 7500 before I open it. I bought a 1070 and only plan on doing 1080P for the next few years before getting a new CPU and 1440P monitor.

If you're not planning to overclock, and are sticking with 1080p/1440p, the 7500 should be fine.

Hey everyone! Long time since I last posted here :)

It's summer over here and it's damn hot (think 35C/95F), and under stress my stock 6700K goes up into the high 70s Celsius. I've decided my AIO purchase was ill-advised (CM Nepton 140XL) despite some great reviews, and am thinking of switching back to good old air-cooling.

I will OC at one point so I want something good, and I'm debating between the Noctua NH-U14S, NH-D15 and Phanteks TC14PE.

Case is a Fractal R5 so clearance shouldn't be an issue from that standpoint, but I'm worried about RAM and PCI clearance.

RAM is G.Skill Ripjaws V and mobo is Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI. Does anyone by any chance have one/both of those + the coolers I mentioned? How's clearance? How are your temps?

Thanks :)

I have a 3770K, 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a 660 card. I was wondering which GFX card would give me the best bang for my buck on this setup. I am fine with playing at 1080p/60FPS for the rest of this PC's lifespan (3-5 years).

I was debating between a 6gb 1060 or 1070, but leaning toward the 1060 because it is nearly $150 cheaper and any upgrade would be a huge leap over my current 660.

GTX 1060 if your aim is 60 FPS.

9 years ago, when I worked at a computer store, I was told by vendors Asrock was owned by Asus, actually their motherboards had a very low rma, they were very very solid, one of the best products when it came to value - reliability.

From my experience their motherboards are top notch.

Thanks for the response.

Any other factors I should consider? Just looking for any input.

Your RAM should still be supported unless it's a different DDR model (such as you had DDR3 and the motherboard is DDR4) or something but there's no need to change it unless you're wanting to do that upgrade.

I'd also make sure that the sized of your SSD and HDD fit in your new case.

Not directly PC related but I couldn't think of a better place to ask, but does anyone have experience with Steam Link? I wanted to play Contradiction: Spot the Liar (a FMV game) on my TV but I don't get any visuals coming through. I get the audio fine though. I tried with other games and as far as I can tell it works perfectly fine minus a bit of input lag. I'm on a wired connection but I still tried to mess with the stream quality settings and resolution but no luck. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate them.

Gonna just go in an purchase this at Microcenter - http://www.microcenter.com/product/479097/G428_Desktop_Computer

pc part picker equivalent - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8LnpkT

prices are a bit skewed due to the gpu being out of stock so inflated prices but I think the Microcenter PC is a great deal.

Powerspec PCs are great. They pretty much use off the shelf parts, the only thing that is proprietary per say is their chassis I think and even those are based on regular standards. Would definitely recommend if you don't feel like building PCs or aren't comfortable with them, or just want to get something that works with little hassle.

Should be fairly easy to upgrade and replace parts too.

I have a Ryzen 1600 and a RX580. Is a 550W power supply enough? I had ordered a 650W one on sale but the store has backordered it for 2 weeks. I can get a 550W version for a bit less Amazon same-day.

I'd be curious what power supply they put in that. It says the wattage, but just curious the brand. Looks like a great build for the price. I'm honestly really surprised, I have such a bad opinion of pre-builts, but this seems legit.

Hi all, need some small help.
A friend wants a new gaming PC built for around £900.
He doesn't need an OS as he's got that sorted.

Years ago I'd be able to piece one together with no problems, but I've been away from it for so long I worry what I'd come up with would be incorrect or not as efficient as it could be.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to get to make sure it's all compatible and works nice and fast?

Thanks in advance!

I bought a new mainboard (Prime B350M-A) from amazon now, didn't manage to get one earlier. It only has one chassis fan, can I use the Fan RGB (CPU) Header for normal fans?

What are the current rumors for nVidia's Volta (2000) consumer launch?

I'm having a hard time finding Gigabyte's Mini ITX 1070 at normal prices. Newegg and OutletPC are both sold out which lead me to believe supply is down because either/or may be happening

1) ETH crypto wave
2) New nVidia launch soon
