This game looks hella janky from the Twitch streams I've watched. I prefer Friday the 13th because it feels like an actual horror movie. Last I checked, there are no horror movies in which some killer has to stick folks to a hook for 10 seconds until a robot confirms they're dead? Or something? I don't get it and it doesn't look super fun.

Yeah I've been watching streams and it doesn't seem to be a lot to the game. The thing I like about F13 is the different ways to kill someone and having to hunt for objects to escape. Doesn't seem like this game has anything like that unless I'm just missing it? I do like the maps more than F13. They seem to be nice, dark, and spooky.

Picked this up and playing on Pro. Glad to finally say, after I think a few hundred hours on PC, I'm finally playing with excellent performance!

Feels good. Great game.

It has better performance than the PC?
My rig is an i5 6600, 1080, with 32gb of RAM. I started playing DbD about 4 months after launch and it ran great. One day, the performance of it, and it alone, dropped off a cliff. Fps ranged between 12-24. I tried literally every .ini trick I could find. Uninstalled. Reinstalled. Did the same with drivers. Nothing worked, even the switch to Unreal 4 or whatever it was. I reached out to the community, to the developers, nothing helped. Tech support and the Dev team ignored me, even when on Twitter. Quite a few people with 10xx series cards I spoke to experienced this. It was super frustrating.

One time there was a patch and for like two weeks it was great again, only to go to shit again in the next patch. It was just awful.

I've got to hope that being on a console they'll need to optimize a bit better.

On the subject of F13 vs this game. Jason is my homeboy. I've got toys, movie reproduction masks on my walls. Posters. Jason artwork my kids made me hanging up. I've got a picture of Jason on my desk at work. I love Jason. The developer team for f13 clearly do, too.

To be perfectly frank,I have come to prefer the variety of environments and simplicity of purpose here. I like the Friday counselors better, but prefer the killer experience here.

Edit: f13 was my first and only Kickstarter. Bought the Savini Jason and extra clothes like a year before release. Played dozens of beta hours and it ran amazingly on epic settings in 4k. The final game has always run like shit for me, even in 1080p on medium.
I've played it maybe 10 hours since launch. Maybe console version is more compelling but the performance was too distracting for me.

The hooking is just how the game is designed. If this was some F13 shit where 1 hook was death, the game would be awful (see F13 with shift grab). Getting hooked once in this game, means your team needs to come help you and get you off the hook. This isn't a horror movie power fantasy game like F13. This is an asymmetrical game with some semblance of balance. Think Evolve but quicker paced and you have all the tools you need right from the get go.

In this game, survivors can outsmart the killer. Hide in dark areas, juke the killer, play mind games with the killer, leading to wasted time and hopefully your teammates are doing generators while you're evading the killer. In DBD evading and getting chased gets you points and in turn is not a waste of your time nor the teams. In F13, you can evade for a while, but you're going to die eventually against anyone that is even semi competent. You will also get less XP as evading in F13 does not pay off at all. You wasted Jason's time for 3min while 2 people escaped in the boat, got 2-300 more XP than you. Now you get to chat with them and watch the game for 15min or you get next to nothing in terms of XP.

In DBD, each killer has 1 power and an attack. You can kill people by hooking them 3x or even just once if no one comes to save them, or if you camp their body. You can also leave them laying on the ground and let them bleed out...which is pretty BM as it takes about 5min to bleed out. If any killer had any of Jason's powers in DBD, (except traps since those are in the game, but Jasons traps are on a whole new level of OPness) they would be very busted. Even throwing knives would be insanely OP in DBD. Shift, good lord nothing to say there. I really hope the devs don't get any ideas off F13 for killer powers.

There's about 75 perks in DBD spread across killers/survivors. Some are useless but I'd say about half of them have some sort of value and can change up the way you play. Each killer/survivor can equip 4 perks. These range from (killer) breaking pallets faster (one of the main mechanics for a survivor to escape a killer), seeing downed people on the ground from certain distances (they light up in red). Increased FOV is another perk for instance. Popular Survivor perks are Sprint Burst (when you sprint you gain a burst of speed, this goes on cool down when used and replenishes over time), Self Care will allow you to heal yourself without a med kit.

If you want to play a game that feels rewarding and requires a bit of skill on your part, DBD is where it's at. F13 is more catered towards a less competitive crowd, and that's fine. Both games can have draw different crowds that's for sure. Personally, the few people that I know that play DBD, that went to F13, have similar views. And all of them are back to playing DBD.

*Changed link to a diff one, I watched the old one and it's just silly shit for the last 3 min.

Apparently online works ok on consoles if you temporarily use the survive with friends workaround aka queue in SWF even when solo. They used to have the same bug on pc earlier.

We need more impressions in this dead thread. The lack of excitement in this thread has me nervous about the install base on consoles. Are there any good reviews or beginner tips for this game? Still not quite sure about this game. I love Friday the 13th and when it works it's a lot of fun so this being similar has me intrigued...

This is the kind of game that will sell and be played by a lot of people, but will rarely be mentioned on GAF.

I really enjoyed watching streams of this on PC but I don't know if it's the kind of game I'd buy myself, because I don't have much time to dedicate to multiplayer games and I don't ever talk online, which seems like it'd be pretty crucial to get the most out of a game like this.

Check out the OT. It's dead as hell, yet the game is more popular than it was when it launched a year ago.

Boy, this thread is dead. I'm surprised more people aren't talking about it. I'll have my ps4 copy on TH, I'm excited.

After spending 6 or so hours with the console version, I have been very impressed with the game. Scary, fun, fast matchmaking, better graphics than F13, and smooth (no jank). Loving it so far!

Awesome! Can't wait to try it. F13th left a bad taste for me, hopefully this will be more fun.

This is very helpful, thanks. Is it feasible to play this without a mic and still be a decent player, as long as you are aware of the visual and audio cues?

Any tips on a good starter survivor/perks? Thanks again.

Thank you for the impressions in here, gang. I had not even heard of this game before today and was considering F13 as a purchase. Now I'm leaning toward this one instead. I still have some questions though:

-Does PS4 not have all the monsters from the PC version?
-Has there been any mention of Halloween DLC coming to PS4?
-Do all the monsters have to hang the survivors on meat hooks or whatever, or does that depend on the map?
-How many maps are there?
-Do the survivor objectives ever change, or is it always about getting 4 generators running?
-Any word on possible licensed DLC like Halloween for things like Texas Chainsaw, etc?

Thanks in advance! I'm getting pretty interested in this one.

Wow thank you for the description and how it's different that F13. I really love F13 for the different kills and how the counselors have to hunt for things to survive. This seems to be a lot faster pace. What's the end game for the survivors? I've only seen them try to turn on generators and escape down a hatch.

Well, another wrench thrown into my plans. Walmart not in store, just figure I'll buy digitally and its $47? WTF!?!?

What is going on? Went back to store and it now says $29.99 or $26.99 for PS+, but not available until June 23rd?

I've played it about 600 hours so I guess I'd say it's worth the while. If it 'clicks' for you, it sure is an awesome (if sometimes rage-inducing) game.

Good general starter perks are spine chill and premonition because they'll help you learn to watch for killer and survive early matches.Small Game is similar good starter perk since it teaches you how to avoid trapper traps and find totems to dismantle.

Later you want to get the teachables which require leveling each survivor or getting lucky on the shrine. Best ones are:
Bond (Dwight)
Self Care (Claudette)
Iron Will (Jake)
Borrowed Time (Bill)
Lithe (Feng)
Sprint Burst, Adrenaline (Meg)

Generally, playing actively and boldly as survivor will net you more points than hiding most of the match and not getting anything done. Don't be afraid to get into the fray and into chases if it's necessary. Run around instead of crawlwalking even if it leaves marks for killers to see, just gotta figure when killer is not gonna be around to see them.

Survivors need to fix several generators and then open one of two doors (or both) to escape.

There's also a hatch that spawns in a random location that opens when there is one player left or if one of the survivors has a perk to open it prematurely.

Does DBD have proximity audio like F13?

I'm wondering this as well. I played the PS4 version last night with my mic on and talking in the lobby and in-game - but heard no one else and there was no visual indicator when I spoke that my mic was transmitting anything.

I hit you up on twitter and asked which you prefer: this or F13. It was your praise on P1P that initially got my interest piqued for F13, but now that I found out about this game, I'm trying to decide which one to go with. Any advice?

I haven't played enough of DBD to make a determination but had a fun time with it last night at least. If you (or anyone else on this thread) get either, I'm always up for playing and my PSN name is the same as my GAF username - just mention GAF or DBD/F13 in your friend req so I don't just delete you.

Unless you're in a party there is no mic support. The devs 'balanced' the game around having gestures (there are 2, a motion for come here, and a motion for pointing). I say balanced in quotes because the devs don't like the idea of voice comms in the game. That's fine with me, it's their vision. The game is definitely easier when in a party with someone and talking though. I find the game is a good experience with no mic and playing solo. Also good as a duo. I have never done 4 man survive with friends (SWF).

Each survivor has 'teachables'. These are perks that can carry over to another survivor. The best teachables are Meg's (sprint burst) and Claudettes (self care). Sprint Burst is 35, and Self Care is 40.
http://deadbydaylight.gamepedia.com/Perks

I suggest new people to level up Meg to 35 (grab the teachable, Sprint Burst @ 35). Immediately swap to Claudette and play until 40 for self care teachable.

I find sprint burst and self care to be the 2 core perks that I need. They are top tier. When you unlock a teachable, they can appear on your bloodwebs on any character now. So you might get self care (which used to be only for Claudette, but you got the teachable at 40) on Dwight at level 13.

My normal perk setup when playing duos - SB (sprint burst, Meg teachable), SC (Self-Care, Claudette), Adrenaline (Meg), and Borrowed Time (Bill). I swap out Adrenaline and BT depending on what I'm doing. But those 4 perks are about as try-hard as you can get. I don't care though, I come to play. Borrowed Time is completely broken imo, I feel for killers when there's 4 BT's in a game. Very brutal.

I'm wondering this as well. I played the PS4 version last night with my mic on and talking in the lobby and in-game - but heard no one else and there was no visual indicator when I spoke that my mic was transmitting anything.

There is no voice chat in DBD. Devs want it that way, and said they will never have voice chat. Feel free to party up though, the game is very hard for killers when survivors are on voice chat and coordinating. Don't be surprised if a Killer has a frowned upon playstyle (camping, proximity camping) when they realize you're a 4 man SWF.

The DBD reddit is very active fyi.

Just played my first couple of rounds, and even though I still need to learn the game it's been really fun.

But I have one question so far: How do I unhook someone? I was standing under a hook and tried to grab the player hanging there, but to no avail ...

Hold the button down. If you tap the button (I don't know what it is on consoles sorry, there is 100% a control list in there though) you'll just sort of fake grab. This is useful if a killer is camping.

You fake grab (tab the unhook button), killer hits you, this gives you enough time to get a full grab and get someone off the hook. Now you're dead though, unless you have Borrowed Time. BT will let you and the person you unhook take 1 more hit before being downed.

Ooops, That's way too obvious, thank you.

And this sounds like something I have to try out.

I bought this an I am excited to play tonight. Hopefully it’s easy to find matches on PS4.
It's super easy. I've never had to wait long.

This is like the perfect storm multiplayer game for me. Short commitment, no mics, good lore, cool atmosphere, monsters, upgrades.

The lore really is a cool idea and surprisingly in-depth if you read up on it.
