In what may prove to be a massive cybersecurity hazard in the long run, a large amount of internal Microsoft data about Windows 10 has been leaked online.

The files, found on BetaArchive, contain 8TB of compressed data that comprise of 32TB of internal builds for Windows 10 and Windows Sever 2016 and even software blueprints. This is believed to contain the code for Shared Source Kit, which includes the source for Windows 10's hardware drivers alongside PnP code, USB and Wi-Fi stacks, storage drivers, and ARM-specific OneCore kernel code.

All of these are critical systems for the operating systems and with their code available in plain sight to malicious parties; the massive leak, which is believed to have been taken from Microsoft's own systems, could prove devastating for the security of the OS in the future.

It's probably time to backup and change your OS.

So happy I don't actually browse the internet with my laptop anymore. Shits almost purely an offline photo workbench

Linux or OSX I guess. Operating systems that have had core parts of it open source for at least couple of decades.

There's likely to be some sort of mass virus etc from this.
Make sure your windows is updated :p

Linux Mint for me. Only reason I'm using Windows right now is because unfortunately my old portable HDD that had linux on it died. :?
Don't recommend an OS that has no enterprise backing and has had a server hack in the past.

Ubuntu, Red Hat, Fedora, Centos even openSUSE are Linux distributions that are used in servers with paid support contracts from the vendors.
There are security teams dedicated to supporting the OS with SLAs to ensure that security flaws get patched quickly.

Vanity OSs which are designed to just "make things easier" for desktop users by shipping codecs or to be a showcase for a desktop environment are pointless.

Doesn't necessarily spell catastrophe yet; MS would have scanned their code with some of the same tools a hacker might used looking for vulnerabilities.

It certainly increases the risk; but keep in mind most of the internet runs on open source code.

For you.
It's hilarious how W10 keeps getting shittier and shittier and now even more vulnerable that past ones. MS has done a terrible fucking job

Also FYI, it's not likely that this will be fixed by a simple security patch. They'll probably have to do a lot of work to remedy this.

were the 7, 8 or 8.1 source codes ever leaked? Or any older version of Windows? Or is this unprecedented?

This is a good thing actually. If MS has any decent security source leaks don't matter but only make work by auditors and security professionals easier.
E: Anyone worried about this had no business using Windows if they thought it wasn't secure.

I have been using Windows since 95 and 10 is my favourite Windows yet.

It's cool to hate Windows though.

Will be interesting what happens with this development though. Will be keeping my eye in the situation.

I don't think this release includes any kernel or UI source code, and as far as I know, the only versions of Windows that ever had at least a partial source leak were Windows 2000 and NT 4.

I've been using it since 3.1, it sure as hell isn't my favourite. It doesn't take an expert to see the issues.

win2k and some old NT version was partially leaked in 2004, enough for exploits to be found. This, however, is the not the whole OS.

And I can't believe betaarchive had terminator guts to put it online
