ICE bust of local leader puts Boston’s illegal Irish on edge

”There definitely seems to be a shift in focus that any non-citizen is at risk of detention, regardless of their contributions or ties to communities," Millar said. ”It's a misguided policy, there ought to be some kind of priority in terms of enforcement."

...Right... Give me a damn break.

It is. The Irish dude was totally cool, they thought they were only going to get rid of the brown people!
You realize that the Irish International Immigration Center doesn't just help Irish people right?
Guy runs an organization that helps people from hundreds of different countries with free legal clinics, ESOL and education programs and people are immediately calling him a racist because of a perfectly normal statement.

Are they going after EVERYONE that is here illegally or just one specific ethnic group the far right has an intense media driven anger towards? Let's just say that I have doubts that such a strategy could continue if they target everyone, from all backgrounds, here illegally. Deporting people for being here illegally under the current political subtext makes America look terrible around the world.

I remember seeing promotions for that TV programme at the time, and thinking how audacious it was for this guy to be out talking openly about this. Did he think he was untouchable? Why? There was something either very arrogant or very naive about it.

I feel sorry for his family, if he has family still in the states. But his actions were idiotic.

It is. This guy was featured in an Irish documentary on illegals in America.
The funny thing about Irish illegals is that they and the Irish media refer to them as "undocumented Irish" as if they are better and more deserving of staying than those illegals that Trump hates...

Well that's the question isn't it?

I'd say most die hard Trump supporters were fine with this staunch anti-immigration routine when it was just about scary brown people. Trouble is, it looks like ICE doesn't see color, and now a whole lot of white people have to be worried too.

And if this gets traction, I'd expect ICE to be stopped in their tracks.

you could fill in for me for a week or two while I travel to Ireland for vacation. I'd be willing to take part in that exchange. They take our jerbs, for a while.
When on honeymoon in Florida the manager of a Cracker Barrel store struck up a conversation with me when he found out my wife and I were from Northern Ireland. He wanted to do a house swap for 3 - 6 months as he wanted to visit the country his family had originated from. I politely declined, though I can't say I wasn't tempted...

EDIT: Also the amount of people I know who have... 'immigrated' to the USA from Ireland is staggering. It happens way more than I thought (Australia too).

Why the fuck is everybody assuming this guy is a Trump supporter? And a racist?

While deportations of Irish nationals in the Boston area have not increased from 2016 to 2017, the fear and anxiety residents have has, Millar said — and he blamed the Trump administration's get-tough stance on illegal immigration by not just focusing on criminals exclusively.

”There definitely seems to be a shift in focus that any non-citizen is at risk of detention, regardless of their contributions or ties to communities," Millar said. ”It's a misguided policy, there ought to be some kind of priority in terms of enforcement."

He blames the Trump administration for not focusing exclusively on criminals, ignoring the contributions of the immigrant in question, and not prioritizing enforcement (presumably against criminals, since he believes they should be targeted exclusively). For somebody who has been living in the US illegally since 2003, how is anything in his statement objectionable?

You are all just fictionalizing a Trump connection and racial overtones that do not exist, and then congratulating each other for it. "Haha, caught another filthy Trump supporter!"

So if the Irish go back to being non-Whites, does that mean they'll consider Blacks their brethren.again?

That would be nice. Before the people in charge in Murica pitted the underclasses against each other in order to generate racial tension.

An dtuigeann tú = Irish for "Do you understand?" = "You dig?" in American slang (supposedly)

So for people against this what is your ultimate solution? Free and open travel without visa and passports for all?

RTE used the word "illegal" plenty referring to Irish in that documentary on the either month.

Plus I'm pretty sure 'this guy' he is referring to is the guy who got deported, not the man who made the supposed 'dog whistle' statement.

Friendship is a 2-way street though and as soon as they got their invite to join the team... well.. you know the story. The response from black folk would probably be:

Lol+liar+negro+please+_7cf600fe2b3ef8892d59a73cec1435a7.gif

But I'm 99.9999999% positive this scenario would never happen anyways

Cunningham may have caught the attention of ICE when he appeared on a television show broadcast in Ireland in March and streamed online, and proclaimed his illegal immigration status in the U.S.

Idiot.

Don't understand the hate this guy is getting in this thread. The number of Boston Irish being deported hasn't gone up despite ICE ramping up under Trump, it took this guy calling out Ice on TV to get them to pay attention to him while they're going after DACA students.

If anything I applaud him for helping to point out that illegal immigrants aren't criminal scum, they're community members who give back far more than they take from the system, which George Bush Sr pointed out 25 years ago.
