This is fantastic

Marvel winning killed EVO. You heard it here first.

at the time of the donation drive, I thought it was really greedy that we were going to get yet another year of marvel over a new game like pokken, even though there was a new marvel game on the horizon.

but now after everything surrounding marvel vs capcom infinite, it's good that marvel 3 is at evo this year!

Seriously there seems to be no EVO hype. Usually have people talking about it non stop this time of year but everybody is just chilling and playing other games.

For me personally it's because other tournaments have really stepped up their game. These events also tend to be more inclusive of all parts of the fighting game community. I don't have a strong desire to compete and have to set up next to the dumpster broadcasting to Twitch off my cell phone.

EVO fucked up by separating finals from the main venue. Why spend all that money when I could just chill in my hotel room with AC and order a pizza to eat while streaming the finsla for less than what it'd cost for a ticket to Mandalay?

My seating for finals at Evo last year was weird. I was next to the Fang cosplayer who kept getting up to do the victory pose and some smashers. After the smashers bounced when their game was done I was next to cosplayers like that one blonde Senran Kagura one with the schoolgirl costume, which doesn't sound descriptive because they all wear one, but it's the one that is on covers and shit. I was sitting next to Spooky at one point and even took a picture with him but he disappeared eventually. I did get a free "PACK IT UP" poster with a deformed Ryu going home and crying like in his SF2 ending. We basically held it up whenever someone got beat.

I'm hype for Evo, but mostly for character reveals. We'll probably get a SFV trailer, it has been long enough that GG Xrd might get a DLC announcement, and MvCi will probably get another 4+ characters revealed.

In terms of matches, I'm always very excited to see my characters do well. Except for Bison. He's just so uninteresting like most of SFV. :-(

That's kind of how I feel about watching fighting games in general. I would rather be at home sitting in my cozy chair playing Hearthstone on the side instead of sitting at a venue.

I think this year is probably my first year since 2006 that I have not blocked out my weekend for Evo. It's sad, but I just don't find myself enjoying to watch SFV and Smash. It also just feels like there's not much at stake for any of the games.

Yep, I always take Mondays off for Evo since the finals are like 1-3pm my time.... not this year...

Very happy I got into Tekken for the first time before EVO, because I might've actually skipped it except for a few highlights without it.

Do you think EVO's problem is also that they only do the one tournament a year? I feel like the tournament scene is changing pretty quickly and they seem to be doing their thing outside of all of that.

From all the talk in here seems like I chose a great year to finally make the trip to EVO.
Sigh.
Well, it's still a dream of mine to go one day and I assume that even without the biggest hype it'll still be a great time to just...play fighting games!?

Hope there's a stream.

Don't be like that. It will be less crowded (and smelly) and I'm sure organizers will run it smoother. Plus with less competition you might make it further!

Well its soon to be 2 a year.

I think its just a multitude of factors this year. Lack of interest in games for some, issues with venue last year, increase in prices, the donation drive. Some factors have led to a decline in interest, it happens.

Im sure EVO will be just as exciting and still have that energy we all expect from EVO

Judging from what I've heard of other local scenes in the region, it's been a rough year so far for fighting games in general. Not that it's like doomy and gloomy, just it's definitely a transition year for a lot of local scenes. The thing that I've especially noticed recently is the transition as older players are showing up less and the newer guys are starting to take over a bit. A lot of major games either transitioning over to new ones or just being kinda old at this point isn't helping.

This seems like a pretty normal thing though? I know for sure there are a lot of faces I know around the southeast and midwest that aren't showing up in the same context as before at the very least. We got it pretty weird in Nashville with the arcade moving too. A lot fo the scene that was built up with SF4 either moved on to adult life or just didn't wanna stick it out with SFV or the other new games. A lot of those people that moved on are getting their seats filled in now though, it's just kinda slow going.

that isn't them allowing it completely. it's allowing an injunction that was correctly filed until they have a chance to actually review the case.

Sigh.

You probably did pick a good year. Last year was the drizzling shits, but they've acknowledged the issues are are taking steps to resolve them. It should be fine.

Still it affects tourists. And Fall is a long ways from here. Stupid thing to have any sort of ban, big or small in the first place.

There was an awesome Hong Kong vs. Taiwan (15 vs 15) KoF14 event yesterday. Each player had two lives so needed to be taken down twice.

HK got 4 wins and then ET comes in for Taiwan and starts kicking the crap out of everyone with Angel, Joe and Ryo. Seriously the highest level of play seen with these characters and extremely impressive overall, just relentless offense and mixups. Good luck blocking that Angel.

He brought the score to 4:14 in favor of Taiwan until losing his second life to a player called Benny.

Benny then brings the score all the way to 14:14... at which point they decide to turn it into a 20 vs 20 tournament lol. Unfortunately for HK the next player that comes in for Taiwan (not sure what his name is) gets to the win with the final score being 14: 20. Taiwan wins.

Xiaohai, ET, M' (from Japan), Madkof, Reynald etc. are all confirmed to be attending EVO, can't wait to see how things turn out.

Sigh.

I went to EVO in 2012 and felt that I had no reason to go back, since IMO it didn't really offer me much of value over other majors yet cost twice as much for me compared to the tournaments closer to home.

But I definitely think it's worth going to at least once if you like fighting games at all. The sheer scale and international presence are on a tier that no other event can match.

Well I'm from Germany so it's a pretty long (and expensive!) trip so I figured choosing the biggest FG Tourney was a good idea.
I'm gonna meet up with folks I know as well.
Also pleaseee find that food recommendation post. I'm dying to try some american cuisine.

Please do! Could definitely use some.
Can't quote myself since it's a closed topic so I'll just copy/paste it. It's not a full listing of all the good stuff, just some of my favorites

Bacchanal is really damn good. One of the few buffets that I can say is worth the price. You won't regret it.

For some other suggestions...I'm not really much of a breakfast guy but Mon Ami Gabi at Paris was really awesome. Very good and creative breakfast food, excellent staff, and a really fantastic atmosphere. Definitely ask to sit outside. This is my spot I go every EVO Sunday to sit outside, have a bloody mary, and relax/recover from the weekend before the insanity of finals.

For dinners a couple of my favorites:

Hash House A Go Go (Linc) - A fun spin on soul food and has preposterous portions but still well priced. If you like boozey fruit drinks they are good with those too. I recommend the Chicken and Waffles or the Chicken Pot Pie , both super good. If you are from outside of the USA, this is one spot you gotta check out.

Lotus of Siam (Off Strip) - Legitimately the best thai food I've ever eaten. You'll need to take an Uber there but it is so worth it if you like Asian food. You'll need a reservation for sure, I'd call a couple weeks to a month in advance.

Ramsay Steak (Paris) - Very expensive but goddamn is it good. They have a seasonal 5 course meal and that's usually the way to go. It's always something good every time I've been. Another place you'll need a reservation a few weeks in advance if not more. I fully recommend the truffle mac and cheese, beef wellington, and toffee pudding but go with whatever seasonal meal they have if it's available

Cleo (SLS) - Very close to Westgate (ride the monorail away from the Strip, it's the beginning of the line) and really fantastic Mediterranean food. The grilled octopus is out of control. Not terribly expensive but you can rack up a bill if you add in wine.

For some casual, quick stop places I recommend Secret Pizza at the Cosmopolitan, Earl of Sandwich at the Planet Hollywood (get the All American if they have it or the Holiday Turkey if they don't), and Shake Shack at the New York, New York (best cheeseburger I've ever had).

If you go to Downtown Vegas, which I recommend, maybe check out Heart Attack Grill. The place is hilarious. They fry all their food in lard, go super over the top with their menu and advertising (the waitresses dress like nurses) and even sell stuff like 40s and packs of cigs. The food is pretty damn good too but I'd get a small size of everything.

Man, you really have no faith Wizard's crew :p
if anything this is the year they'll do the best since they probably asked for a lot more judges than they'll need, because they were banking on bigger entries

I'll just add the Aria buffet is really good, and if you're going off the strip, the Las Vegas Chinatown in general is really good.

My top recommendation is Border Grill, go sunday for brunch. All you can eat small plates. Fucking amazing. Two locations, I went to Caesar's palace, the other I believe is in the mandalay.

Thanks a lot! Will run these by the pals.

I went to the bacchanal, and though it is really good, I still dont think it was better than going to a more standard restaurant. For all you can eat definitely preferred border grill's brunch. Plates made to order is just better than a buffet.

Still the bachanal does have insane variety with nothing bad. Other than the desserts. Skip those.

For a good Dessert I liked Sprinkles Cupcakes in the Linq Promenade.

For Downtown Vegas. Vic and Anthony's steakhouse was fantastic. Thats on the higher end for prices.
