An N64 one would be rough. So many of that console's standout games were either licensed or made by Rare.
Wouldn't it be great if Microsoft allowed the use of the Rare IPs in response to Nintendo allowing Minecraft to be playable with Xbox players? A nice little partnership to benefit both parties...

The N64 games only got to be as big as 64 MB, it'd probably cost a bit more but i'm sure it'd be no trouble putting 2 GB memory in an N64 mini and it would fit all the games it needs to.

Of course I know nothing about emulation so I may just be speaking out of my ass.

They could easily release a box that contains every commerical N64 game ever without technical issue (it would be impossible from a legal and licensing standpoint, of course). That's not the issue.

The eventual N64 Classic will be a curated selection of Nintendo's titles with a few from Konami, Capcom, and Namco tossed in.

If they're so concerned about this, they shouldn't even produce this Classic line of products.

In reality, this is simply a disgusting tactic used solely to drive awareness of the brand. They have almost zero interest in actually selling these devices to people. If they did, they would open pre-orders in the United States. My guess is this item will never be available for pre-order in the US.

It sure seems that way. I wonder why NOA specifically is preventing preorders while NOE isn't though.

And at least they're being upfront about it being a limited time product this time.

Ok Nintendo. Wtf.

They stop production of popular nes mini to do the same exact thing with snes mini.

Same monetization. No account integration. Wtf then did they end production? Piracy??
Limited third party licenses?

What are they doing?

It seems like they are practicing in artificial scarcity here. At least this would be the first actual evidence to convince me that they are doing so. From this other thread:

It's obvious why they're doing this. They aren't doing it for simple, direct profits. The real money is in games and licensing, but you can only sell so many games to so many hardcore gamers before you reach that ceiling. So they're playing head games. At least, that's how it sounded to me."

"With these plug-and-play systems, they want headlines and foot traffic, dude. The Switch and the 3DS sell great, but if you want to get the normies out there to take a break from their regular Facebook and YouTube routines and do a Google search for 'New Nintendo system,' or better yet, actually walk into the Nintendo section of a store like this, you have to pander to that lowest common denominator with cheap shit and nostalgia. Works every time, dude."

In all fairness this is the perception of an anonymous Gamestop manager and probably nothing more, but unless they've increased their production target by 5x or more from the NES Classic there's no way they're going to fulfill demand here. And they know it this time. They can't fall back on that "we didn't know how popular it would be" excuse.

It really seems like they just want to drive interest in their brand and drive more people to the Switch (and 3DS). If they eventually offer all of these games on a Switch VC service then I won't be as disappointed or pissed but this is a really shitty move either way, if it's what's actually happening.

I'm more excited about SNES Classic than the Switch, PS4 Pro and Xbox One X combined.

Right there with you.

I had and loved my NES when I was growing up and never felt the need to replay those games with the NES Classic.

I had and loved my SNES growing up and those games are still some of my all-time favorites to play, but my original system and games have long since disappeared or stopped working. I'll be putting in whatever work I have to in order to get one of these.

sold out on amazon, smyths, game is broken and most other sites sold out.
Lot's of those orders will be available tomorrow though as amazon will not ship to U.S but that didn't stop people ordering anyway.

Yeah, that sucks. Any link to the out of stock Amazon.uk one so I can see and weep for myself?

So they say significantly more but in the span of 4 months rather than 7? How much does that mean?

Man, missing chronno trigger and teenage mutant ninja turtles 4 (lost in time) is such a shame...

It's weird how SE let them have Final Fantasy and SMRPG but not that, yeah.

I like the idea of this much more than the NES Mini, but I'm still skeptical about the numbers. They say they'll ship more but I still don't think it will be anywhere near enough.

Can Nintendo release a N64 next or that would be impossible to fit the games inside ?
Licensing for a lot of the more popular games might be an issue.

Hunger games: SNES edition. Nintendo why you do this? I can live without getting one, but to include an unreleased game. You know there will be blood to secure one of these. It is almost as if they hate us and enjoy our suffering :(

What is the point in planning that in advance, really? If you have access to other games by legal or illegal means then chances are you can already play them.

Personally? I have a decent collection of SNES games. It's not one of those insanely large collections, but I bought a lot of games as a kid and I kept them. I can technically play them, but getting them up and running would be a hassle. While I can technically just get an emulator or something, I'd love to have a SNES looking thing that looks like the thing out of my childhood playing Scooby Doo :p

Well I definitely placed an order at amazon.co.uk well before some people here, but no email, no order in open orders... seems to have not gone through :(

The stunt they pulled with the NES Classic all but guarantees I will also never see one of these in the wild during my lifetime. Scalpers will sell their houses to scoop every one of these up for years to come.

They could do it. I would love to see the list of games.

They'd have to get Microsoft to help

That would be nice, but not necessary. Here's a quick list of games that they could use. The only Rare games here are ones Nintendo still has the rights to (Donkey Kong games).

1080° Snowboarding
Diddy Kong Racing
Donkey Kong 64
Excitebike 64
F-Zero X
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Mario Kart 64
Mario Party
Paper Mario
Pilotwings 64
Pokemon Snap
Star Fox 64
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Super Mario 64
Super Smash Bros.
Tetrisphere
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Wave Race 64
Yoshi's Story

there was an interview with one of the star fox 2 coders a while ago, long story short, his company didn't get paid its bonus by nintendo due to them not releasing the game even though it was finished, and they used code from sf2 in the n64 version (which is fine, since they were paid to code sf2 and said code is technically nintendo property).

tetris attack and tetris/dr mario were left out for licensing issues with the tetris company, most likely.

I think the tricky part of releasing an N64 Classic would be the controllers. They'd be significantly more expensive than the NES and SNES controllers to manufacture, and are also much larger, which adds to the distribution costs.

GameCube is where they'd start running into storage limitations.

I thought Nintendo couldn't use Diddy Kong Racing?

The more I think about it even if they didn't get MS they'd be fine. You forgot Mario Party 2 and Mario Party 3. I don't think Nintendo puts Mario Party 1. We need Mario Party 3 though.

I would have loved to see Tetris and Dr. Mario, myself...

This one has an awesome two player mode that combines both games together.

I was just thinking about this game this morning.
