Star Fox 2: Dreaming the Impossible Dream

Didn't NOA reportedly finish localizing Mistwalker's ASH: Archaid Sealed Heat for DS and then not even announce it was coming? How many other titles like that, EarthBound "Beginnings" and StarFox 2 do they have, completely done, sitting there in the vault?

EDIT: Oh yeah, NES SimCity too...forgot about that one. And where's Return of Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Music, while we're at it? lol

I wonder if the NES version of Sim City will ever get released?
That feels like a "never, ever" unless Nintendo relicenses SimCity for some reason.

Now Sound Fantasy (a.k.a. Sound Factory) for the SNES mouse... that's something I'd like to see released someday

It's kind of a spiritual successor to Mario Paint, but for sound games... maybe a spiritual predecessor to Electroplankton.

I'd be surprised if they didn't have a few others. Nintendo's made a shit-ton of games and most of the "behind the scenes" knowledge we have come from sources other than Nintendo themselves. Who's to say they haven't made a few more complete games but just left them unreleased and no one outside of the company knew, and thus no one alerted us?

Mysterious Murasame Castle was another great game that we only got recently in the West, but it did exist for all of Japan to enjoy!

Will we ever know what Metroid Dread was???

It was indeed headed by the same guy as Electroplankton...Iwai, was it?

Pennant Chase Baseball for Gamecube was finished and cancelled though it'll never be revived due to licensing. That's about the only legit one I can think of. The rest are betas and tests, though I do hope they mine stuff like the BSX and N64DD for some ultra obscure stuff only 10 people played.

All my thoughts to your brother. I know how strongly a game can bring out positive things in life.

I wonder if this is any different from the ROM already circulating. I remember there being a ROM with Japanese text that had a multiplayer menu option that would crash when selected, and that the (fan-translated/patched???) English ROM had unused code removed. Probably not realistic to hope that they added or re-implemented planned features.

First of all, I'm very sorry for the loss of your brother. Glad you had something to help you cope through. I know games have helped me escaped certain issues in the past and in some ways still do.

As for Star Fox 2 actually being released, it's pretty insane. It's a double whammy for a lot of us in that not only do people get to finally paly Star Fox 2 in a proper way, but confirmation that games using the FX chip are fine to emulate and that Nintendo can release them(or they struck a deal). So we no longer have to worry about Star Fox and Yoshi's Island being in a weird limbo. Good news for future VC.

I purchased repro of Star Fox 2 a little over four or five years ago and I really enjoyed it. It's funny seeing things they put in SF Command and Zero from it. It'll be interesting to see what if/any differences are with this version.

Anyone else here play SF2?

Star-I'm terribly sorry for the loss of your brother. :(

I am glad to read that games like Starfox are helping you cope.

With Nintendo saying there's most likely more Wii U game ports/remasters coming for
the Nintendo Switch, it's a no brainer for me to think we'll get Star Fox 0.5(updated controls) and even nicer graphical touches.

Thanks for the kind words. Star Fox was helpful but so too was a good therapist and social support :)

I would love a Star Fox Zero Deluxe but for the future of the series they should consider bringing back Platinum again and make it in the style of Nier: Automata. That was a PERFECT blend of sci-fi on rails air combat and melee/gun ground combat.

I feel like this is being released just for me, considering just how disappointed I am with Zero, Nintendo is sending me a personal apology and making nice nice by giving me Star Fox II.

You're welcome GAF

Maturity, bitches.
Also with 60Hz US ROMs now becoming the norm for European releases, it would be cool if could get those few PAL exclusive games like Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventures in 60Hz.

Now that's a real impossibility.

I'll always feel Star Fox is superior to 64, so Star Fox 2 was always the holy grail of Foxdom to me.

But ugh... now I have to try and secure an SNES mini. Was hard enough getting a launch Switch 😐

I hope they're wise enough to have the game available in thr classic game collection, eventually.

Should have announced this at e3!

Isnt there some copyright issue that was preventing Starfox1 from being released ?

If there's one thing that really annoyed me about the Super FX situation, it was how the mildly cultish attachment to SF64 as the ideal Star Fox spread and persisted unchallenged among people who had clearly never played the superior original, but couldn't even if they wanted for reasons that were totally out of their hands. I don't have anything against the perfectly competent SF64 (it laid a lot of valuable groundwork for what was later done better in Zero), but the original game oozed a sense of mystery and foreboding that was thrown out of the series when SF64 set such a different tone for everything that followed it. The cult of SF64 as the One True Star Fox has done a lot to shove this sensibility out of the picture as well as poison the discourse about Zero before it was even released.

Really hope I get to play SF2 some other way if I can't get my hands on a Classic; I'm definitely curious to see some of the precursors to elements that eventually made their way into the underrated Zero.

Sorry to hear about your brother. My condolences.

But yeah, Star Fox 2's release is incredibly exciting. I love the prototype ROM. Glad they finally put the Super FX legal mumbojumbo out of the way.

Thanks, MaxCriden! Always enjoy your posts and I'm glad to see you in here with my first ever thread :)

Honestly I enjoyed all of them but it was my first time finishing any of the games outside of Star Fox 64 which I had played through probably dozens of times as a kid.

Command was one I ended up liking a lot more than I expected despite the cheesy fanfic stuff that was hilariously bad.

Adventures is utterly bizarre in its own way but I found it to be a really fun and competent Zelda-like.

Zero I actually loved and I'm surprised at how quickly I got proficient with the controls. Still hoping that it gets another chance on Switch!

The biggest surprise for me came from Assault! The music was amazing and despite all of the negativity I had heard around the game it really impressed me. It did a good job of advancing the lore of the universe and having gameplay that was faithful to the original and 64 even if the on-foot missions were just serviceable.

Overall it is an odd and great series to me :)

Aww, you are too kind! Thanks for your impressions. I played some of SFA as a teen and then a bit with my wife also though I never progressed super far into it. As you said it's bizarre though I remember it being very solid around the mechanics. The shopkeeper's voice was really grating though, haha. I think I have Assault and Zero so I will definitely be sure to check them out since you enjoyed them so well. I've never played too much of the SF game oeuvre but I'd like to play more for sure.

They added all the cut stuff and made the game the way it was supposed to be. This will be a complete version of StarFox 2 the way it was intended.

Congrats! About member status, not about your brother. That sounds awful, my condolences.

Honestly, out of all possible bizarro Nintendo predictions, I never would have guessed SF2 to return. Especially not before Mother 3. Especially after the mess that was SFZ. Yet here we are. Never played the leaked ROM, was it any good?

Even though I never thought the franchise ever achieved greatness, there's some weird appeal to it, so I hope it can continue. In a world where we get two new Metroids, anything can happen, really. Still, this announcement is so shocking. I hated the awful control scheme of Zero, but I'd totally buy a Switch port if it had normal human controls. That seems like relatively low hanging fruit, at the risk of sounding like a port beggar.

Sorry about your brother OP. I'm glad the StarFox series served as a way to get through the tough times. You must be very excited about this release?!!

To think Nintendo cancelled the game so they could release it as a bombshell title on an official SNES emulator over 2 decades later

I am most curious what, if anything, is different from the leaked builds of the game.

Didn't some staff that worked on it say that the final version and the leaked builds are vastly different?

It would be hilarious if Star Fox 2 releasing on a classic console re-release was the surge in popularity the franchise needed to get a Switch game.

Star Fox 2 is going to outsell Star Fox Zero.
Sheesh.

That said, a real HD Star Fox game (aka Star Fox Zero) didn't do so well so I don't think Nintendo cares enough to try again and the fans probably don't care enough either.

I wonder if this starfox 2 will be any diferent than the leaked version the creator said that the leaked build lacked an important feature of the game.

There's speculation that this version of Star Fox 2 may be the one that Dylan Cuthbert possesses. Which is said to be the most complete build of Star Fox 2 and the closest to a final release version, and was never leaked or released to the public.
