Wonder Woman Could Become The Highest-Grossing Superhero Origin Movie Ever

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!

It isn't just its own DC Extended Universe stablemates that Wonder Woman is beating out at the box office; Marvel-based blockbusters like Iron Man and Deadpool are getting passed, too -- and there's a good chance that by the time the film finishes its box office run, it could be the highest-grossing superhero origin film ever made.

To accomplish the feat, Wonder Woman only has to pass Sam Raimi's Spider-Man -- which currently stands at $821 million worldwide, compared to Wonder Woman's $745 million.

Further proving the notion that origin stories for the lesser known heroes are still needed, despite what some will claim.

Well deserved success.

It's losing theaters, it might happen the same way Bronsonlee might become cool

I went to see Wondy for the 3rd time on a $5 Tuesday and it was packed. It was only $5 but people were having a good time.

It only needed 15 years worth of inflation to beat Spidermang.

On the real, although I didn't like it all that much, it's nice to see WB getting its shit together on some level.

For now.

Does it even have the legs to get to $404 m domestic? With that, it only needs $41 m Foriegn to top Spider-Man (2002). I see it hasn't opened in Japan as of yet.

"but wonder woman is not a cultural icon outside the usa"

=P
I know you're joking but I'm sure some think that while also forgetting how Iron Man, Thor, Dr. Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, and fucking Ant Man all were virtual unknowns for the general public prior to their movies and they were all worldwide successes.

Well deserved. To finally have a good DC movie, and a Wonder Woman movie at that, is nothing short of great. Was worried that DC was going push Harley Quinn, an abuse victim VILLAIN, in place of Wonder Woman in the scenario that it failed, but it seems the world is always going to remember the classics.

Globally no, it almost doesn't have any chance.

Domestically its possible, though still slim.

Doesn't take anything away from how fantastic of a run its had

Thea article is about WW numbers. I think they just omitted mentioning GotG, because it's probably assumed that WW will pass it, it only needs $30 million to do so, and it will almost definitely get that much by the end of its run.

Well there's no point mentioning GotG because it doesn't matter whether WW beats it or not when the headline is about being the highest grossing superhero origin movie ever. It needs to beat Spider-man.

Well, it hasn't passed GotG globally yet, which I assume is why that poster brought it up. It'll definitely beat it, so I don't think it really matters either way.

Wonder Woman has a shot at beating Spider-man domestically. It has much less of a shot doing the same worldwide.

Of course Spider-Man was about the size of the Avengers or TDK for its era, and Wonder Woman is about the size of Iron Man 1.

Iron Man 1 is the only one that was entirely based on the film.
"Marvel" is what is putting everyone in the seats especially after Avengers 1.

It's a great film and I love that it was the (not so) little movie that could.

Had no clue the original Spider-Man movie made so much money back then - that's deserving too.

No which makes it even more crazy.

As kswis noted, Spidey for its time was like Avengers sized. It would be over $600 million domestic alone

Even if you don't want to invoke inflation and all of the issues involved with that, Spider-man was the fifth biggest domestic film of all time, and the third film to hit $400M in its initial run (E.T. and Star Wars got there with re-releases).

Wonder Woman might crack the domestic top 25. Iron Man 1 peaked at #19 of all time domestically back in 2008 I believe.

What the hell, that's crazy. So basically, no one is ever going to dethrone SM?

All we have left are d-list superhero origins.

Are the GotG considered superheroes?

Dunno if I buy that. Comic book *characters*, sure. But superheroes?

Hmmm.

Admittedly my definition of what a superhero is - well, it's probably pretty old fashioned.

I think of superheroes as having some sort of extra-ordinary ability, powers if you will, that are granted to them through some sort of phenomena, accident, etc. Exceptions (to me) include those who willed their way into the hero job and wear a disguise, but bring some sort of extraordinary talent or skill. Like Batman.

Not everyone in the Avengers fit's this description. Black Widow is a spy with a gun. Iron Man would get a pass by my definition, Hawkeye borderline.

Just me I guess - but I don' label someone a superhero because Marvel or D.C. says they are. :)

Goddamn.

Spidey used to be quite the box office king huh.

Given a choice between Harley and Wonder Woman, I'm glad the latter is now the face of female superheroes.

Exactly. It has done remarkably well. And even if it doesn't take the crown for total gross, it has had some of the best legs a super hero film has had in almost 30 years. An incredible run at the box office.

I mean, you are basically describing all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, to one degree or another lol
