Samurai Shodown V Special coming to PS4/Vita

We're finally worthy. Heralded as the magnum opus of the fan favorite Samurai Shodown series, the home version (AES) of Samurai Shodown V Special was a victim of circumstance and experienced a rocky original launch. The arcade version of the game was a clear evolution of the series, building upon what was already one of the most violent fighting game series in the industry. The most notable addition was the inclusion of brutal Overkill moves which gave players the ability to end a match with a visceral fatal strike unique to each character. Samurai Shodown IV had already featured generic fatality-like moves, and Samurai Shodown V Special was meant to take that even further with character specific moves.

That arcade version of the game was already controversial for its level of violence and gore, but after a violent incident in Japan the fate of the game's home version was in question. The game was mysteriously delayed right at the last minute, and the community was shocked to find out upon release that the home version of the game had been heavily censored. The last-minute censoring also resulted in critical bugs popping up in the game and SNK quickly issued a recall in response to fan outcry. That recall issued bug fixes but only partially restored the censored parts of the game.

Today, we are happy to announce that we have heard our fan's requests to bring this game back in its original form, and have been working with our partners at Code Mystics to deliver the game to PS4 and Vita. The goal from the start has been to give the game a proper release that will not be marred by the circumstances that hobbled the original AES launch. Our team believes that it is important to see the game delivered to fans as the original creators intended.

It sounds like this is the "Classic Neogeo Project" that will be at EVO.

Kinda left field choice considering Tenka's already on PS4...

I wonder if this is going to be the original version or the heavily censored version.

Read the OP, it is the uncensored version. If this has online play I will be online as Basura and Galford all night long. Word of warning to those of you who are only familiar with SS1-SSIV, SSVS is very slow compared to the speed of something like SSIII. SSIII(Fixed MVS version) is still one of my most favorite games but SSVS is probably a close second.

That trailer makes the game seem like its Mortal Kombat. I don't think thats what SamSho is about.

Well MK was one of the inspirations for the first SS and it sounds like it's the direction SNK might be wanting to take the series forward with Neo_G saying that he wants to work on a new SamSho and make it very bloody/brutal.

I wonder if this is going to be the original version or the heavily censored version.

Original, uncensored.

Oh yessss. I remember Gio had a poll of which Neo Geo games would we like next, which this won, but Windjammers got hammered in the comments and then that happened and I presumed this wasn't gonna get ported.

Then Arcade Archives happened and I thought we'd definitely never get this.

Very pleasing news. We've had nearly all of the good late-in-life Neo Geo games ported now right?

Still hoping we get KoF '98 UM on Vita one day...

PS4/Vita exclusive? the wording on the youtube video makes it unclear

It looks like a Third Party Productions job through Code Mystics, therefore I'd assume PS4/Vita only.

I've always wanted to play a Samurai Shodown game, which is the most recommended of the series? Is it this one?

HELL YES!! About time SNK! I knew that after Last Blade 2 and Garou Code Mystics would do a SamSho game. Thank God they chose V Special over 2.

I guess I should have said that I couldn't watch the video, lol.

Also yes, I didn't read the OP, but that's what I get. Stoked though, SSVS is a really solid game. Also, it's grim as all hell, which was a pretty big departure from other MVS games.

Nice!

I'm completely oblivious when it comes to Shodown. I bought VI on the PSN sale recently. It has a TON of characters and a TON of loading. Is that version not well regarded in the series? Couldn't find much YouTube-content for it which I guess is a bad sign.

SS game popularity usually goes like this

SSII > SSVS > SSIV > SSIII > SS

My personal list is

SSIII(Fixed MVS version) > SSVS > SSII > SS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SSIV

EDIT, I should note that VI is so bad I don't even count it. It is like a mugen hack SS game.

Lyte Edge

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag

I had a lot of fun with VI, particularly the arcade version. Loved all the new/added characters, but yeah, it was pretty polarizing. Also completely without all the gore that Special had.

It's SS Sen that was complete garbage.

This is cool. I really liked the 3 other PSVITA/PS4 ports. Windjammers also coming.

Here's hoping for more. Sengoku 3 please!

What do u mean by fixed mvs?

Sen was a hot mess but I don't even discuss the 3d games when it comes to these lists. To me, SS will always be a 2D game. If they make a new one they need to go the 2.5D route. I just hope it has better models than the new KOF had.

A dedicated fan who went by the handle SMKDAN went back and fixed many of the problems with the original MVS release of SSIII. Things like the hitboxes on certain characters or a glitch that would cause some of Hanzo's moves to miss an opponent entirely. He had to change frame data and other high level fixes to make it the game it was supposed to be. Granted, he could not fix every problem, but it elevated the game to the top of my list. High level SSIII play is a sight to behold.

It's not that its not well regarded, its just that the discussion centers on SS2 or SS5S (or Iroha from SS6)

Wonder if there's any chance it'll come to the Switch? I'll happily play it on Vita, but I'm building up a nice Neo Geo collection on Switch and would like it there too.

So I guess I can really start hoping that they'll have something ready to show off for the 25th anniversary, next year!

Expecting great things from Neo_G. Capcom's loss is something that I bet SNK will gain.

Now, to just hope that they have a bit more 3D experience under the belt to make the next SS something beautiful...

Indeed, though in the case of SS they will also be working with a much smaller cast (doesn't have to be anywhere near 50 like in Kof14) so they can dedicate more time per character as well.

Iirc it was mentioned that Neo_G has been really itching to start working on a new game so here's hoping he got his chance.

Ah, the highly popular and beloved Samurai Shodown... V.

What a waste.

???

No fans really got to play this game as it was never ported to anything. SSVS improved on everything from V except for the music. The balance was the big factor although Mina can be abused and Yunfei is a beast if you know how to use him. Everything else was improved. We should be glad that more people will be exposed to one of the best games of the series.

Seriously, which game from the series would you want a new port of? I'd gladly take SSIII but I am in the minority.

Doubtful, this is like the Last Blade 2 and Mark of the Wolves ports that have recently released, they seem to be PS4/Vita exclusive.

SamSho II. If anything deserves to be online on a current-gen system, it's that.

I just cannot stand new-era (relatively speaking) SS. I thought III was interesting but flawed, but from four on it just kind of turned to garbage to me. I mean, they aren't terrible fighting games, but every bit of the magic the series once had was lost—especially considering I still think SSII is one of the best fighting games of all time.

I'm totally cool with anything outside of SSII coming by way of like Hamster's archives or whatever. Get all of the games up on there, absolutely. But picking SSV over SSII is, to me, like picking KOF99 to put work into rather than 98.

Whoa, this is crazy, definitely going to get that since I quite enjoy the series(I like 1, 2 and 4, 3 is one of the worst IMO).

I'm very happy to see this get released but man, they sure are taking a long time LOL. Hope we'll get KOF'98UM and KOF'02UMTV on Vita too.

It'll probably be released on Switch as a ACA Neo Geo title (MVS version) like Garou and MS3. This version with online play is likely exclusive to PS4/Vita.

3 is the worst, in many circles.

Everyone considers 2 to be the best (and I'm not disagreeing) but it's too overexposed imo. I enjoy 4 more overall.
