FF12 makes me realize even more how bad 15 is

I wasn't even a huge fan of 12 when it released, but I enjoyed it for the most part. But it's hard not to compare these 2 as of course they're out around similar times, but wow revisiting 12 not only makes me realize how empty and totally underwhelming 15 really is.

There's a depth of character here, the world actually is interesting and seems unique, the music has a great feel in many ways to it, the actual party feel and differences between members.

I mean I just can't get over how for me as a fan of the original games more than anything, I can't get over how 12 actually excites me. And it's only because 15 was so disappointing that 12 actually feels new again especially with the zodiac setup.

I don't think 12 is a pinnacle of the series by any means but it still holds a certain something that "is" final fantasy if even a little further out.

I realize many liked 15 and I tried, but damn, when 12 feels this good in comparison that really shows me how awful 15 really is.

Anyways, enjoying it....makes me pumped for the 7 remake even more even tho I am not a major fan of the combat change.

Yep, playing 12 for the first time and having a guided story is a welcoming change. FF15 was an open world mess.

Completely agree with you, OP.

Better story.
Better characters.
Better combat.
Better soundtrack.

XV doesn't come close.

There's a lot of like about FFXV. But story, what FF is known for, is abysmal.

I had the same experience playing FFIX after FFXV.

Been thinking the exact same thing watching my flatmate play XII. I didn't even like XII that much when it came out but it's just staggering the gulf between it and XV in terms of an actual finished story with actual cutscenes.

Makes me sad.

Hot take: XII is still the best JRPG released since XII.

Okay... but we've had Persona 4/5 and Xenoblade Chronicles since then. As well as Bravely Default/Second on the 3DS.

So, I would disagree. XII is good even in 2017, a lot of JRPGs can't make that claim, so I'll give you that. XII had the best Final Fantasy combat system, they should bring it back in some form to a new game.

The problem with FF14 is the early stuff.

I can't do it. It's so boring. So damn boring.

I thought the story up to about level 20 or so was somewhat boring and then things picked up after your first primal fight and it was great all the way up to the end. The story content between ARR and Heavensward is a snoozefest.

Let's not make this about every other jrpg, I love xenoblade, love persona 5, love lost Odyssey etc...

This is explicitly about final fantasy... And 12 simply puts 15 to shame, they should be absolutely embarrassed by 15.

The story in FFXII is a mess. It starts well but then dives off a cliff.

It's still better than FFXV's story tho

It's interesting to see how people suddenly like this game after it was so heavily critisized back in the days for not being "FF-like" enough. I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thread about XV in the future.

FF14: ARR is better

Once you reach Level 50 and beyond? Sure.

Before that it's pretty boring.

"Oh, you just defeated TWO godlike beings? Awesome! Go fetch some items for this banquet"

I almost burned out before the game really got good. Glad I stuck with it but damn.

Imagine of Square built the foundation on XII for all the future games.

FFXV suffered from being a casual mess. People are apparently too stupid to play an RPG.

I have this problem got to level 20 ish and do wanna experience Stormblood and Heavensword content though but can't be asked to go play and playing FFXII instead...

It's funny I never played 12 on ps2 but I'm having the opposite opinion. I feel like my time is being wasted constantly in 12. Running back and forth constantly just to pick up a single item to interact with another npc. This notoriety mini game is the epitome of redundancy. I also hate the micro managing with gambits and the license board. I'm doubting how much more I want to play it.

All the time wasting quests were optional in 15 and I didn't need to do them. Combat is also way more fun in 15. 12 feels entirely turn based with slight freedom of movement.

Square should have included a story skip for free with Stormblood like every other MMO.
I jumped in on FFXIV properly this week.

There is a quest chain that is like 20 quests deep that has you going all around the world to essentially make a fucking sandwich. Then when all the food is assembled the characters are like lol jk.

Meanwhile Titan is about the blow up the planet.

Gaaaaah, thank god you can have all classes on one character because I am never making an alt for this game.

That's the Final Fantasy effect at work. The recent entries will be bombarded with a vocal minority of players criticizing it. Happened with XII, XIII and now XV.

Whenever the next entry comes out it usually takes a lot of that heat off of it.

FFXII also has the benefit of being able to fast-forward gameplay which keeps the game from being a slog.

I remember it being heavy praised at launch... I just read that some GAFers criticized it at launch but I was not here at time.

And FFXV never received the praise FFXII received at launch... FFXII was a 92 avg. reviews.

If anything, playing it now made me realize that I was giving XII too much credit. It's as much of a far cry from the series glory days as XV was.

Personally, I think I prefer XV but that's a matter of taste. XII is a much stronger game mechanically speaking, and it has "more" story, but the story is just the most uninteresting take on Star Wars with one of the weakest parties in the entire series, at least XV had a great party and an amazing story told poorly, XII story is just borefest, it also falls apart in the latter half. It also got the worst art direction and music in any modern FF IMO. XV resonants with me a lot more.

XII is still so much fun thanks to the combat, marks, and post-game stuff, though.

Yea XII really shines where XV was especially weak. Character development and story. XII also has a much richer lore that is truly fascinating. Set in Ivalice, Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story round out the depth of this world's history and its characters.
