Oculus Rift and Touch Thread: I need something more

Dirt Rally in VR is insane... With the G27 wheel, my god the experience is something else... The simulation in the game and the force feedback is just AMAZING. Every time you drive your heart is pumping to not crash the goddamn car.

When said app/game is available on both the Oculus store and Steam, which route are you guys going?

A part of me wants to buy on Oculus for the ease of use (and knowing it will use the Oculus runtime vs OpenVR), and another part wants to buy on Steam to ensure my software will work in the future despite which HMD I may have.

I started defaulting to Steam for everything not free available on both. But lately, I've been choosing the Oculus store.

I'm not worried about being "tied" to the Oculus store. If I decide to go with a non-Oculus PC HMD to supplant the Rift, there will be a way to play those games. CrossVR or someone in the community will assure that there's a wrapper if needed. And hopefully Oculus' support of OpenXR will result in official support of third party hardware down the road. Worst case scenario, if a Steam version of a game works with my hypothetical future non-Oculus HMD and the Oculus store version doesn't, the game will be cheaper than it is today (even more so during a sale) and I can double-dip.

I also never refund games (though the UK Oculus store has that feature now and they may roll it out globally) and I'm not invested in Steam's social features. So YMMV.

This is kind of what I was thinking as well. Besides, Steam already gets plenty of my money.

i'm a crazy dude with both headsets so I go Steam where possible but always hope that Steam releases support both APIs.

Most Steam releases do, only game I have that doesn't IIRC is Battlezone. It plays fine in SteamVR on Rift, though, of course.

I've finally joined the ranks. I thought it was going to be on a Gen 2 Vive, but that Amazon deal. Need to do some cleaning, but I have a nice space for it.

Bought the bundle in the sale. Having issues with one of the sensors.

  • MSI Z77A-GD65 mobo
  • My USB 3 controller is Intel, with 2 rear ports and a midboard connector which 2 front ports are connected to
  • The Oculus compatibility tool doesn't bring up any problems with any of my USB controllers (I believe it's just the one Intel)
  • One sensor works fine in any of my 4 USB 3 ports
  • The duff sensor doesn't work in any port, not even USB 2
  • There is no unknown device for it in device manager when it's plugged in
  • The only hint of life is the white light does come on if you plug it in during Rift Setup

I've tried reinstalling Oculus, removing the drivers, running the driver exe in the Oculus folder trying different ports, disabled legacy support in the bios etc.

I'm going to test it on my mate's computer tonight just to be sure but I suspect it needs to be replaced.

Have you tried plugging the dud sensor in on it's own? I kept having problems when setting it up where only one would work at a time. Eventually the thing that fixed it in the end for me was disabling the wireless network adapter because reasons.

Yep after I uninstalled the Oculus software and manually removed the drivers, I did everything again from scratch and tried the dud by itself first. Nothing.

My rift should arrive some point next week.

I'm looking to buy a few games when it arrives and doing some research into games. Any opinions on the following games would be appreciated alongside any recommendations.

SuperHot VR: based on what i've seen on youtube this looks awesome.
Audioshield and/or Soundboxing: I just want a really good vr game like audiosurf
Chronos: for that 3rd person vr experiences with an interesting gameplay system. But i heard its short which is disappointing.
Raw data: Does this allow free movement now in singleplayer, since the multiplayer allows this? It seems enemy wave based which is offputting.
Mages tale: Still researching this but it seems to be popular. Whats the campaign length?
Gorn: Is this a tech demo like game? or is there progression to it?
Wilsons heart: is this a decent horror game? also whats the length?

My preferences are horror or fps games that aren't wave based (free movement would be a bonus). If they are close to console game prices, I would prefer they have a good campaign length (something close to 10 hours would be nice). I got tired of gear vr games being 1-2 hours in length at best.

SuperHOT VR - yes, it's fantastic
Chronos - this game is great. It's long as a VR game, but short compared to compared to flatscreen games in the genre.
Raw Data - I think it's still teleport only. It is kind of a wave based shooter though. Robo Recall does several things better but Raw Data has some advantages like multiple classes.
The Mage's Tale - I'm working on this one right now and think it's great. It does not have smooth locomotion but apparently they're working on a patch that adds this feature. Campaign length seems to be around 8 - 12 hours. There are a decent amount of secrets to be found.

Based on your preferences I would recommend the following:
- Arizona Sunshine
- Serious Sam FE/SE VR
- Doom 3 BFG VR mod

Thanks for the responses.

Superhot VR , chronos will be a definite purchase.
My interest in Mages tale is higher now (thanks Vermadas :D)

For Raw Data, I will wait and play robo recall first if they are similar.

Really hate the oculus rift site for finding games. Either I'm really dumb or there's no search function and no way to read user reviews of games either.

Other games that I'm thinking about:
- Job Simulator: I always hear good things about this but it sounds like a tech demo. Is it a good showcase of VR compared to other free alternatives (for when I have visitors over who have never tried VR)?
- Paranormal Activity The lost Soul: Is this a better game than Wilson's heart?
- The Climb: This one looks great visually, but the price is pretty high for what looks like an interesting experiment, or atleast it feels like it doesnt have much content?
- EVE:Valkyrie : Does this still hold up well as a vr experience or it better to spend that money on other games? Also how long is the campaign?

My youngest brother is really into boxing. Whats the best boxing game available?

Arizona Sunshine was one I was interested in but it seems like it finishes in about 2 hours? (I'm basing this off youtube walkthrough playlists though). So I'm thinking of passing on it if it is true.

Serious Sam and Doom I'll do some research on, thanks for the tips :D

Chronos was not short for me (I think it took me around 20 hours), was playing on Hard tho.

Sounds great, I typically play games on normal mode first. I assume hard will be fine if I've played through all souls series games, if so I'll play it on hard too.

I keep on forgetting that I always should be facing forward with these two sensors and touch controllers. I am frequently messing up the tracking

I buy on Steam 99% of the time. I don't like how Oculus has locked out Vive users. What if I want a Vive 2 instead of Oculus 2?

There's a lot of SteamVR games (the majority) that use the Oculus runtime, and thus run at all speed there.

I bought SuperHOT VR on Oculus because it was there way sooner, and I bought Arizona Sunshine on Oculus because that game in particular needs every performance improvement it can get, and it runs better on Oculus there. A handful of others were more on sale on Oculus Store than they've been on Steam.

Really SteamVR works pretty well. On the Oculus controller the menu and home buttons work pretty well for switching between the two if SteamVR is already loaded. Plus I can be in the Star Trek TNG Holodeck via SteamVR.

Wow!

I tried out Compound which has artificial locomotion (analog movement) and it took me all but 2 minutes to adjust to it.

Did get some vertigo at the beginning but if I stood still while I was moving in the game it was easier. The worst of it was when I was spinning my body around physically while walking in a direction in the game but even that went away. No sickness feeling at all though.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.. or I guess unlucky if you look at it from a darwinsim perspective?

It's 2 AM now but I just couldn't stop playing Echo Arena. It was my first time so I obviously sucked, but the last time I had so much fun with an online game was in the Rocket League Beta. Great Game.

I am thinking about buying a third sensor though...sometimes if I spin to much the other two lost track.

I really need a wall mount for one of my sensors ;(

I'm so confused as to which one to buy. I want something without screws and cheap in the UK

Anyone have any experience with Oculus support in the UK? I tried the sensor in another computer last night and it wasn't detected there either so I'm fairly confident it's just broken.

Really gutted to now be able to try and Touch stuff as thats the vast majority of what I want to play. For controller experiences I've only tried Lucky's Tale and EVE Valkyrie.

Lucky's Tale is ok. Dont know what else to say really, it's a very basic platformer. Find the camera movement a little nauseating.

EVE Valkyrie is fantastic. As an experience it 100% sells VR as "the future". I've only played about 90 minutes so I don't know how deep the campaign is but the gameplay is so much fun.

Give Elite: Dangerous a go. EVE Valkyrie comes off as downright primitive in comparison, though they are aiming for somewhat different aspects of the space combat experience. Elite is a much more immersive VR experience for a number of reasons. For me the difference is primarily in how it handles. EVE feels "wrong" in how physics apply to your ship, whereas Elite feels completely natural.

Thanks guys, I ended up ordering one of those adhesive stands --

I didn't know the sensors screwed off like they do.

Same here, always saw youtube videos of people mounting to whole stand upside down.

Once I found out they could be removed, ordered the mounts straight away

I imagine you really need a HOTAS to get the best out of it though. It also just looks like a really bland game and I dont like the look of their pricing model.

Might give House of the Dying Sun a go.

Just wanted to jump in to say that Echo Arena is the real thing. Everyone needs to play this game, like right goddamn now. Between this and Robo Recall, I feel totally justified in buying a Rift.

What a great time to be a gamer. 👍

Still waiting for mine to arrive from Best Buy. The sale price made me jump in a way I was not expecting. Still don't know if it will be returned though but guess we'll see. I've been hesitant in buying either a PS4 or XBO. Had no problem buying both a Wii U and then a Switch because I knew I'd love the games and did and do. I've been doing a lot of PC gaming in recent years so I guess Nintendo hardware/PC is my general setup these days. However I'm kinda jumping into VR blind in a way. I know what the different setups are, what the tech does, and seen some examples. It's the general state of the industry where I'm not to knowledgeable.

Does the future in general look good? Is support increasing or decreasing? Games for the Rift vs VIVE or PSVR? Is one starting to get all the support?

Are the current offerings satisfying? In a state were they become all you play or just a nice diversion from what you normally play from time to time?

Thanks.

I checked the OP but didn't see a link for a friends list... is there one? Wouldn't mind filling out my Oculus friends list as well as my steam one.

Yeah oculus has an app called Oculus Home. It has a friends list. It also has a store and you can access your library from within it. It's fully featured.

Can you mirror the audio on the oculus app, as you do on steamvr?

Yes, there should be a setting where you select audio output device and can select mirror as an option. This wasn't initially available before at launch, definitely easier now.

Are there any storage solutions other than this VRBX I've seen on Amazon? Kinda worried about the iffy reviews but I want somewhere to be able to store everything when I'm not using it, but still don't have to unplug everything.

That's the only thing I found. I'm in a room with tons of daylight so I kind of had to buy it, it comes in next week so I'll post on here if I like it or not.

Thx. Might pull the trigger on it as well then. Good thing I got that Amazon gift card. Won't feel as bad paying so much just for a storage box lol.

Finished The Mage's Tale. Clocked in at 10.5 hours.

+ After the most recent patch, the loading times are MUCH improved.
+ Smooth locomotion option introduced in the patch is better, but feels a bit too slippery. I thought that the small step teleporting the game used was a decent compromise for those more prone to VR sickness while keeping a fast pace.
+ Nice mix of puzzle solving and combat
+ Tons of collectibles. Some hidden cleverly. I was missing quite a few.
+ About 2/3 through the game the environments start to feel a bit samey, but then there's a tonal shift which I thought was fantastic.
It felt like I was in a Diablo dungeon. Some of the creepy and unsettling imagery that wouldn't phase me in a flatscreen game (and would probably be considered tame to most people) was incredibly effective at unnerving me in VR.
+ Spells felt fun to use.
+ Being able to customize many aspects of the spells is nice...
- ...but there were still only four main spells you have to work with:
fireball, ice lance, lightning, and wind gust
- The combat was generally fun, but there wasn't enough variety in the enemy types, and some of the sequences dragged on FAR too long.
WTF at having to kill 99 bad guys on that pyramid.
- Lots of the puzzles amounted to trial and error or "find the missing objects"
- I thought the humor was extremely flat.

Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Nice review, will be getting it as soon as my rift arrives :)

So far my first day buys are:
- Superhot vr
- Mage's tale
- Chronos

Got room for 1 more game in my "first day" budget. At the moment, it will be one of the following:
- Audioshield
- arizona sunshine
- I expect you to die (Don't know much about this one though)
- Damaged Core
- raw data (its on sale on steam until monday so might end up picking it up)
- Thumper
- Job simulator (is it worth the price?)
- knockout league
- space pirate trainer

I've dropped wilson's heart based on reviews I've read. Seems short and there's little freedom in where you can go, as a result puzzles are also easy. Also dropped Paranormal Activity as I read people were completing it in about 2 and half hours (which makes the price a rip off).

Do we know how long those bundles are gonna be available for? Is there any refund policy or no? Just kinda worried some games might make me too nautious to play. Looking at that action pack tho. I loved Superhot on Xbox and Wilson's Heart looked cool. Have no clue about the other game tho.
