LSH is pivotal to certain character arcs. She forces Brienne to choose a dishonourable path for a greater good, echoing Jaime's arc.

She'll show Goldenhand the Just first hand the terrible consequences of a crown failing to do justice, the result of his father's work. That without a just crown the people will turn to the grim reaper for protection and revenge, and a trade atrocities and injustice amongst themselves.

To Arya she will demonstrate what her future will be if she is to continue on her path of revenge. She'll become a merciless monster, an inhuman incapable of happiness and love. LSH is for Arya to reject and destroy with the gift of mercy, and so symbolically reject her own path of revenge.

And LSH is the prototype for resurrected Jon. Jon's coming back seemingly free from all warmth, ice, single minded in his pursuit of saving the realm, merciless towards those who failed in their duty and do not adhere to his will. Void of love and happiness. And so comes the question, particularly for Arya, if Jon isn't just another unfeeling LSH, an ice heart for stone, and if he needs putting down like LSH.

LSH is theme and arc, and no correct fit for a show that's more about dick jokes, special effects and fan service.

Wooooooooo

Every time this picture is posted I feel compelled to make a quick post expressing my distaste for these two individuals

Especially the one on the left

Truly a terrible person from all the things I've read over the years

Pretty sure they cut her because she's an utterly pointless character so far. I'm sure she'll serve a purpose eventually but if George really wanted her in the show he should have got the books out quicker. Which goes for pretty much every other deviation in the show to be honest.

So D&D aren't beholden to their decisions?

I wonder if they'll somehow find Blackfyre or Dark Sister - the two ancestral swords of Targaryans in season 7 for Daenyrys.

However, from the shots of her on Drogon, it doesn't look like she carries any weapon.

Maybe the fact they weren't included is a hint that they aren't pertinent to the story ("Aegon" being relatively unimportant is likely even in the books, after all), especially since GRRM met with them to discuss where the story was going. Aegon wasn't all that well received after ADWD - he'd fit even worse in the show considering the timing. As for LSH - other than maybe with Brienne's story, there's nothing to guarantee she has much importance at all. Maybe she factors in to a possible revenge plot against Daven Lannister and the Freys, but how much does that add to the story in the show?

As for the commentary about non-book readers - if anything, you'd think that Zombie!Cat would appeal to the supposed lowest denominator, wouldn't you?

We'll find out when both the books and the show are all wrapped up, I guess. Honestly, I think it takes more of a suspension of reality to assume those two characters ,given who and what they are, don't have a larger role to play in the story. Unless it's on purpose for the sole reason of shock drama and misdirection (which even if that was the case would make for good story). Do you think Oberyn Martells part of this story was pointless? He didn't survive past one book. But he had an interesting role to play, as I'm sure Aegon, LSH, Griff, Jaquen and others would as well, even if they're never destined to sit on the Iron Throne.

-And yeah! You'd think Zombie Cat would have a measure of appeal to the casuals. It's why ai'd love to eventually hear D&D's excuse for leaving her out.

The deviations post DwD I understand, obviously because the show must go on, but the deviations prior to it, I'll never understand.

Well said! Honestly, hadn't even thought about the potential parallels between LSH and Arya like that. Or the conflict Brienne might deal with, mirrored in Jamie's own.

The "gift" that LSH, Berric, and Jon were given could definitely deal with a bit of exposition at some point.

Well that's only because he introduced the storyline and then proceeded to stop writing books.
Basically. When you think about it, it's amazing how many storylines from ASOS have not been resolved or even continued. Robb's will comes to mind. Stoneheart has one (admittedly great) scene in Feast, none in Dance but seems poised to play a role due to Jaime being led to her.

The slow walking of Bran's story is another example. It just seems like Martin is kicking the can down the road while piling entirely new plots and cliff hangers on top. He's out of time now. Winds has to resolve a lot of shit or else an 8th book will be required. And the fact that at least 250-300 pages will be from Dance doesn't help.

The only way Martin finishes in the next two books is if he kills of a decent number of sub-plots. Instead it looks like he's adding more based on the preview chapters that have gone out. This is why people are convinced he doesn't have a way to tie everything together and just stopped putting out new work.

No way he finishes the series in 2 books. I don't think another book will ever come out by him.

Umm...what?

I would fill you in but I have to leave for work. I expect a full and in-depth cunt-stained finger report from one of the other fine GAFfers in this thread when I return.

There was a Tumblr post detailing a lot of unpleasant Linda-isms, but it appears to have been removed.

I'm not gonna lie - after being completely ambivalent for over a year, I'm really looking forward to this season.
Me too.
Is there a more pessimistic group of people than A Song of Ice and Fire readers?
They're certainly up there.
Ive never heard of them before, so I don't know who she is.
They're sort of superfans of ASoIaF that run westeros.org and they've done some proofreading/editing for GRRM in the past. They collaborated with GRRM on the World of Ice and Fire book. They have a wikipedia entry here. Linda has made some ugly comments in the past and isn't well liked, and I'll leave it at that.

Let's not do that again. It's really not worth our time and the derail. My mistake for posting the picture yesterday and contributing to it. Thanks.

I'm in the same boat. Season 5 was bad, season 6 had good action but felt hollow, and it's just hard to care as much in the offseason now that there aren't book plots to wonder about how they're going to adapt anymore or major castings to deal with. But I'm excited to watch this thing. Especially given that trailers seem to be pointing to no fewer than four major battles this season, and big set pieces are the thing the still do well. Cool shit will happen, which will keep things interesting, even if I can't shake that sense of hollowness.

I'm really looking forward to this season but I'm hoping there's not too much fighting. Game of Thrones is at its best in character moments, not with swords and dragons. At least to me. Blackwater is still my favorite fighting episode. We'll see how things play out. I'm just worried it'll be a lot of Battle of the Bastards and that's not really my bag.

You hope there's not too much fighting.

There are 7 episodes, and Dany is going after two Lannister strongholds, there's a battle at sea, at least one huge whitewalker scene, and no telling what else.

I'd say this season will have the most (short) battles per season.

I don't expect any hard-won battles, though.

I keep seeing the idea floated around that Dany and Jon are going to be sitting together on the Iron Throne at the very end like it's the most natural and obvious end for the show. Which...feels wrong to me? I guess. I know the show has been building different promises than the books, but it just seems like it would be such a banal ending.

Like I said before, Dany isn't going to end up on the iron throne. She's going to lay down her life fighting Cersei and the night king, while Jon ultimately sits the iron throne.

Or they would create an eighth aspect of the faith, as Hot Pie ascends as "The Baker"

Father, smith, warrior, mother, maiden, crone, stranger, baker

Pretty sure if a character being "utterly pointless" meant anything to D&D, there would have been a shit load of Z-tier slop which wouldn't have made the show, especially in season 5.

Ollie, Ros, and Karl "The Fookin' Legend of Gin Alley" Tanner sit at the right hand of the father in paradise.

Based on some thoeries I heard
meets is currently in possession of dark sister.
It's last know whereabouts was with bloodraven, meets grabs a sword in cave before they bolt, it could be dark sister

Just finished rewatching the last season. Goddamn I forgot how packed it was. Tommen's suicide, Arya's brief turn as a Frey Pie Baker, leaving Dario behind. The whole immolation of the Great Sept sorted of crowded a bunch of deaths / exits out of my memory.

Daario is a good man, defending all of slaver's bay with 1,000 sellswords.

He won't die horribly at all.

I watched The Winds of Winter last night and I'd forgotten how good it was. Almost 70 minute run time and there is not a wasted frame in that episode.

Not to worry, GRRM is not Tolkien.

However this might end, in his own words, it will be bittersweet.

My bet would be the other way around, but in either case, there's not going to be a happy ending here with both of them ending up ok. Someone is going to have to make a sacrifice to stop the Night King.

I think there is a great chance that no one ends up on the iron throne and the seven kingdoms are split into seven independent kingdoms once again at the end of the series.

Who's gonna get the sword tempered in their heart

No one ever talks about that

Shit bugs me

Even though I know it's definitely gonna be dany's dragonblood that turns regular sword into super fire sword.

I don't think the show ever brought up this plotline so it's best to ignore it. Only fire sword is gonna be Beric's.

Yeah potentially true...

In the book Beric's fire sword is clearly a fake parlour trick and not the real deal.

The show has made a big deal of Valyrian steel killing white walkers and being powerful stuff, and Sam stealing his Valyrian steel house sword was an obvious plot point. My bet would be that Sam and Jons Valyrian steel swords will play a significant role (perhaps Brienne's Brightroar as well?).

Maybe Valyrian steel is like Kentucky Fried Chicken and has a secret family recipe so everyone can have a Valyrian steel sword.

Then they'll make short work of those whitewalkers.
