TIL Canada is less multi-cultural than the United States

I'm actually shocked at this statistic considering how much Canada is pushed as being multicultural, and the US as... well not that.

I would like to see a more updated one, I would imagine we have grown in different ethnicity's over the last several years. Our population is around 35 million and we take in over 100 thousand people sometimes around 200 thousand (business owners, students, workers) from other countries every year plus refugees. Also some of our cities like Vancouver and Toronto are very multi cultural but our rural areas are mostly just white people.

the USA is very unique in its racial composition. And with that comes its own issues. The U.K. and Canada have considerably smaller black populations.

I swear there was a thread about this almost. Some folks really thought Canada was more diverse I think I said California wins let alone the rest of the USA.

This varies tremendously depending on the mothodology applied. Pew Research's most recent analysis differed from Gallup's in many ways for example. Diversity is an odd metric to get a precise grasp on.

America is very diverse compared to other countries, right?

Sorta. By Western standards, it's pretty good. But a lot of countries in Africa blow it out of the water. The amount of diversity on the African continent is staggering, so the most diverse countries are like Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, etc. By a huge margin over places like the US and Canada.

It's probably shifted slightly in the 10 years since that data was taken since Canada takes in a higher per-capita amount of immigrants.

But yeah for the most part Canada is white as snow outside of the immigrant cores in Vancouver and the GTA.

I mean for a Western Nation the US is like among the very top for diversity.

There are large swaths of the country that are VERY heavy with minorities in terms of population. WAY more than something you would see in Canada or the UK

We know? Just because America treats us like shit doesn't mean there are less racial minorities than other western countries.. There are huge, diverse, non-"guns, god & weekend KKK rally" swatches of the US..

Most of that diversity is like compacted in Toronto and Vancouver, i.e. the only places people outside of Canada know about the country
pls no kill QuebecGAF :p

This is an old statistic but keep in mind:

1. People would always prefer to go to the US due to better opportunities for professionals.
2. It's cold as hell.
3. Canada is significantly smaller in terms of population, with only about 2-3 cities that are extremely diverse, (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal).

Once you go outside of the main cities, Canadian's aren't as liberal as you might think. That's where the hardcore conservatives dwell. Don't believe me? Drive an hour in any direction from Montreal and see for yourself as a colored person.

Best wishes.

America has the whole melting pot/salad bowl thing going on. In either case it's still a diverse mix of people.

These numbers are not right, even for the year specified. White people made up 80% of Canadians in 2006. The 2011 percentage was 76.7%. The 2016 percentage will be in the low 70s most likely.

Not terribly surprising to me as a Canadian. The major cities are fairly diverse, but there's a lot more Canada than that.

I've always wondered how that's calculated - I would assume it's by ethnic group since if it was by racial group like in the OP chart (with Hispanic essentially being a racialized group) African countries wouldn't be any more diverse than most other places. Black, Arab, some Indian, some Asian, some white...

But is the US calculated by ethnic group as well when compared to those African countries? Because then we'd have to take into account the different kinds of white, black, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, etc. And it just seems mind boggling that many countries could be more diverse than that.

Racially it is, not many countries come close besides Brazil being way up there. However, ethically there is more countries that are far more diverse like China and India. However, in China's case it is still pretty homogeneous like 90% of the population is Han Chinese, but have dozens of ethnic groups.

Some places like Central Asian countries have ethnic groups that look much different than the dominate one. Africa as a continent is said to have a lot of genetic diversity.

Yeah it takes some motivation to make it from South America, or Central America to Canada.

They tend to stop in around Texas or Southern California, or a few other states. No worries for the liberal states or Canada, you do not have to deal with any of this shit.

Eh.. I know what you mean but keep in mind that Canadian conservatives are not 1:1 with American conservatives. I've lived in Quebec for about 10 years and am half Arab half black .... I've gotten more shit for talking English than I have for my view on religion or the colour of my skin.

Correct.

Its about how you want to define it. If its about racial groups the US is among the very top in terms of that split. You go in any major American city and you see tons of different racial backgrounds everywhere.
