Fortnite (PC/PS4/XB1/Mac, Epic Games) enters early access on July 25

There's about 300 hours between start and the game's current "end game." Which is to say, the team will continue to add content to the game through the early access period and beyond, so... yeah, there's a lot of stuff to do, see, collect, etc. Lots of game here already!

I am sure we will get some answers tomorrow but just between us gaffers... What is your favorite class to play?

Always disliked the game, because I think throwing waves of enemies at u is lazy design, but it actually looked pretty fun to play and I love loot. Might gonna try it out!

Oh, okay. Cool. That's actually much more than I would have though. :D

I hope this garners a decent playerbase. I feel like there's not a lot of hype around it. Cross-platform play would go a long way to making me feel more comfortable with it.

I didn't even know it was coming out until yesterday I hadn't heard about it being in beta or alpha either.

This game looks fun but I'm always wary of F2P games, and more so when they're charging for early access. Hope to get more impressions soon.

So a quick question to ask to those who are getting this game. Are you getting it digitally? or on Disk? And which version are you getting?

I was planning on getting this game too, but the confusion between the digital release on Friday, the game coming available on Tuesday and the various versions have thrown me off just a touch.

Was ready to spend $60 on the disk, but apparently I get just spend $40 for the simpler version online.

It's looking really good. I had totally forgotten it was coming out but I've just preordered on PS4 and started preloading now.

Excited to jump in over the weekend. Hope it runs well on PS4 Pro.

So pump for this game! Don't know which version to buy though. someone help me!!

I went with the second least expensive digital version. Was £49 from PSN.

It's hard to answer that question for you without knowing your budget, but allow me to break it down beyond what the website does (https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/pre-order/standard).

The base version, at $40 (guessing that you are in the US), is pretty bare bones. You get the game, and you need to earn damn near everything, and you get 7 pinatas of various forms, those give you gear.

The deluxe version, at $60, has a lot more. Instead of starting with one hero, you have two for each class, and you get a small selection of guns right off of the bat, along with a founder's pistol, and now you get 33 pinatas of various types.

The super deluxe, at $90, gives you everything the deluxe does, as well as a copy of the base version to give to a friend, some in game defenders, more vault space, in game banner icons, and now 47 pinatas.

The limited edition is $150, and it gives you everything the super deluxe does, plus even one more copy to give to a friend, even more vault space, more backpack space, two legendary heroes of your choice, as well as a legendary weapon to go along with those heroes, and now 99 loot pinatas.

What does that all mean? Hell if I know. I think if you are more than just a little interested, you should probably go with the $60 version. If you have a friend who's into it, and wants to give you some cash for it, or you just want to be nice, the upgrade to the $90 version has some nice stuff.

I opted for the $150 package, probably because I'm stupid, but I have two friends who are psyched, I get a couple legendary heroes, and a bunch of other stuff that I would probably get if I played at least X hours (literally we have no idea of knowing how long it would take to get all the stuff you'd get in the limited edition - it may be 8 hours of playing, or it may be 800, tomorrow we'll have a better idea). Keep in mind that you can buy the base version, and if you want more you can upgrade in game and pay the difference.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, that helps a lot! I think I'm gonna go with the deluxe version. I have one more question, can everything else be unlocked in the game or do you have to buy them?

I didn't know that you could get a PS4 and PC copy making one purchase. I assume that is for digital copies only? If that's the case what is the best way to purchase? Through the PS Store or from Epic directly? All I saw on their website is that you need to link an Epic account with your PSN account. Thanks.

You are very welcome, always glad to help.

We'll know better tomorrow. From what I've read, which isn't insignificant, there's very little that's truly exclusive to the different packs.

The founder's chat channel, and the founder's pistol, are both unlikely to be able to be unlocked via playing.

There's "exclusive" legendary heroes for the top tier one, but some folks are saying it's semantics, and the pack of them is exclusive, but the heroes aren't. So you won't be able to unlock the pack via playing, but you will be able to get the heroes themselves.

The other thing, and there's all kinds of back and forth, is backpack size. Apparently there are mechanisms to upgrade your vault, but it sounds like backpack size doesn't have the same avenues.

Hopefully, when more comes to light tomorrow, that isn't all bullshit.

FWIW, I think the best plan for most is to go with the deluxe version. $60 for a game isn't crazy, and there's plenty there. The fact that you can upgrade in game, like if a friend sees and wants it, he can give you $30, you can pay to upgrade to super deluxe, he gets a copy for $10 off and you get more cool stuff, that's all pretty cool.

Hey I preordered the founder's edition on PSN yet I didn't get any preload download. Checked library on ps4 and nothing there. Checking the store page for the founder edition only tells me that I have the founder edition token already or something. Any ideas?

I don't know about PSN but the launcher epic games has for PC says servers will be up 7/20 at 9AM ET, but I can't preload either.

According to reddit (1 day old)

Hey guys, we want to give a heads up relating to your questions about preloading Fortnite. On PC/Mac we're making every effort to make this happen and will update you as soon as we know. For console, even if you are able to preload right now, it's possible you could end up having to download again closer to launch as we continue to update with the latest builds. We want to make sure you guys know this since it's can be a pain to have to download twice. We'll let you know when the final updates hit console as soon as we have those details. Thanks!

Mostly the quality, does it feel premium, or does it feel like a low quality F2P game?

That, and I'm wondering exactly how the cash shop effects your gameplay.

Feels premium to me. Solid controls, decent graphics, really well optimized even though my PC is pretty old. It's very well polished, and I am talking about an alpha version from 2-3 months ago.

If the cash shop is the same as the alpha, you can buy currency that buys additional pinatas but you can also earn that currency in game, often through just logging in daily. There are also additional ways to get new schematics and survivors + heroes. I don't know every in and out of everything though, cause I only progressed so far. The tree that unlocks things is very long and there were a few things that were marked unfinished.

Is solo play in Fortnite viable or is it purely focused on multiplayer teams?

This is an easy answer for me cause I played a ton of solo. And yes, you can solo the game afaik. Later on, it gets pretty tough though. And you can use defenders to supplement teammates too.

How easy is it to get by with randoms you matchmake with?

My friend doesn't look to be picking this up, so I'll probably be flying solo, just silent with randoms online. Is communication vital?

Even with constant com chatter the gameplay still appears to be something like herding cats.

Is it just me or is it a little odd that a game that's going to be F2P next year has a $60 early access physical release this week?

Not odd at all. If you've been paying attention to primarily multiplayer titles like this that is a common business model, whether they start it from day one or not.

Lots of people willing to pay to be betatesters, might as well reel in as many as possible.

The real concern for me is that the press coming out of E3 this year was "meh" at best. Definitely something I can "wait and see", particularly when I already know it is going f2p down the road.

From the people I know that played it said they enjoyed it. It also seems to mix a lot of the games me and my friends usually play for a chill time.

As for the beta tester thing, look at things like PUBG. It's a technical mess and yet set record after record blowing up the entire genre of game. People pay to have fun and don't care if it's labeled early access or final. For comparison a game with 300+ hours of content is a lot more potential enjoyment than paying $10-15 for a movie and getting 2 hours.

The press also rates everything "meh" unless it's a 10/10 games with crazy narrative and vistas for them to masturbate over for 5 hours straight.

Proof is in the pudding and the pudding is coming Friday ☺️

I'm also in on PS4. Same bane as here if anyone wants to add me.

It will be difficult juggling this and Splatoon 2.

So... game is supposed to be playable tomorrow, and it's still not appearing in my PS4 library.

Clearly not getting a preload. Cool.

Didn't know this was cross-buy between PC and PS4, that might push me to get it. Hope they also make it cross-play in the future.

I am surprised it's not considering Paragon. This is even a co-op game do I see it really see why not.

So, a question on this:

Do we know (roughly) how long it would take to unlock some of this stuff? An extra £20 for all of that is pretty decent, but I don't want to be forced into spending that much extra by an outrageous grind.

anyone know if we can stream this once the NDA is lifted in 30 minutes? assuming the pc servers actually come online at the same time of course

No idea. Alpha players can weigh in in about 20 minutes, but until tomorrow we don't know.

Is it looking like GAF is leaning towards PS4 over XB1?

Trying to figure out which way to buy to maximize co-op potential.
