Bright | Official Trailer (Netflix, Will Smith, Dec 22)

The setting reminds me of shadowrun.
It could likely fit right in, too. Sort of Shadowrun circa early Awakening (early 2010s) to early goblinization (early 2020s).

Shadowrun before the world goes full metal cyberpunk, but soon after elves, orcs, and shit start appearing.

Fairy Lives, huh? 😐

Why the hell would they put 'from the director of Suicide Squad' in the trailer

Exactly what my wife said lol..

The movie won an oscar, that's why.

For best picture? Director? No? Ok then..

Imagine the reception if that Netflix logo wasn't in the corner lol

Something about knowing that it will be at stay-at-home watch makes it easier to digest. Will Smith? Buddy cop? Cool, I'll check it out

yes give me more fantasy mixed in with modern times / future the more stuff i can get like shadowrun the better this and that new pixar film sound amazing

A lot of people really liked Suicide Squad still. I hated it, but it's just one of those movies that people love for some reason cause it is edgy and has lots of music.

You guys do know Max Landis wrote this shit, right?

So it's not just a David Ayer movie. It's a Max Landis-written David Ayer movie.

I think this is my primary concern. A Landis script, directed by Ayer, with both of them as producers. It's like giving a room full of children the keys to a candy store.

It might be okay though, Landis has said that his other scripts got messed with. Can't imagine that happened here. Nobody can pass the blame around on this one.

It was indeed noted earlier in this thread.

Apologies if I missed it.

It should probably be reiterated:

Max fuckin' Landis wrote this shit.

So I mean, yeah, be worried about David Ayer's directorial abilities.

And then multiply that by a factor of "Fairy Lives Don't Matter" Landis

I think this is my primary concern. A Landis script, directed by Ayer, with both of them as producers. It's like giving a room full of children the keys to a candy store.

I mean, who knows! If it reviews really well, I'll probably give it a shot like "Who'da thunk it. Let's see what's what"

But as of now? Ehhhhhhhh.

Jesus, the guy does one dud of a movie, which was reported to have had a lot of studio interference, and he's suddenly a hack. This guy put out End of Watch!! At least give him more than 1 dud before you write him off completely.

Max Landis though, I have no excuse for him. Carry on.

Looks good, but man, this could have been an incredible Bad Boys 3 twist.

Woosah. Mike and Marcus take ex.

EDIT: Also, yeah, End of Watch was incredible, so let’s not shit on this because of Suicide Squad. At the very least we’re at null now.

Oh, Netflix, please let this be one of your few 4k HDR titles.

I'll definitely give Shadowrun x Alien Nation a shot.

Marcus comes in at the 3rd act as

Nothing in this trailer seemed compelling to me. Personally I think Ayer's best stuff is behind him and he's basically just phoning it in now

Dubious credentials aside, I think it's kinda fucking rad that a streaming service is releasing a 90 million buddy orc cop movie on the day people go on holidays.

Looks dumb as hell but I will absolutely give it a watch. Ayer and Landis are both selling points for me, particularly if I'm not paying anything for it.

Just out of curiosity, have you read any of Max Landis' scripts or is your opinion of his writing based solely on their respective film adaptations?

Do you, generally speaking, judge screenwriters by what they have written or what their work ends up being?

I've read a couple of his scripts & also his comics work.

Judging a writer solely by the finished film is always dicey because of how much input other writers (sometimes uncredited) and directors can impose on the work. But there are also aspects of that writer's traits as a writer that can, over time, still show through, which makes the writer's predilections pretty recognizable.

But I've read enough of his shit and heard enough of his opinions on storytelling to know I don't like the way he does it.

Looks kinda like two movies put together to be honest.

Like you have the new partner on the force dynamic, and then you have the plot where it's going even harder on the fantasy aspect.

The partner looks like he'll kinda fade into the background.

Not a Landis fan and Ayer is barely still in my good graces after Suicide Squad but the trailer is a good sell and in for Big Willie.

Not a fan of Landis and Ayer can be hit or miss but Will Smith/Noomi Rapace is enough of a draw for me to check it out.

I really dislike that "fairy lives don't matter today" line and it unfortunately probably skewed my perception of the rest of the trailer...
